Da, Da, Da was a collaboration between Prince and Minneapolis rapper Scrap D. In press for the album, Prince stated one of his goals with the album was to have each song end with a positive message and cited this record as an example.

Face Down was released in April 1997 as a promo single from the album. However, the division of EMI Records that handled the album's promotion was shut down around the same as part of corporate restructuring and caused its commercial release to be canceled. The song was inspired by a tirade Prince's longtime keyboardist, Morris Brown, went on after Prince had read a negative review of The Gold Experience.

"We did this record The Gold Experience, and for the most part we had really good reviews, but we got this one scathing review. Usually it didn’t bother him, but for whatever reason, this particular one kinda bothered him. He showed it to me and—I was the funny guy—I said, “You know what, Prince—they can kiss my ass. As a matter of fact, when we die they can bury us facedown and they can kiss our ass on the way out.” I said all of this stuff, I went on a cussing tirade, and he just died laughing. And two days later he plays me this song, “Face Down,” and it’s everything I said to him about that review." - Morris Brown (GQ interview, December 2016)

One of Us is a cover of Joan Osborne's 1995 debut single/hit. Prince had his management send a personal note to Joan expressing his love for her record and asking permission to cover the song (with a very slight lyrical tweak to the hook). Fun fact: the drum loop is sampled from Martika's Love... Thy Will Be Done (which Prince co-wrote and produced in 1991).

In September 2019, My Computer received a cover-mount single release in Germany for the October 2019 issue of Musikexpress to promote the subsequent catalog re-issues of Emancipation, The Versace Experience and Chaos & Disorder. The release touted the song as featuring Kate Bush who provided background vocals for the song; three years prior, Prince had played guitar, keyboards, bass guitar and provided background vocals for Why Should I Love You?, a track from Kate's 1993 album The Red Shoes.

Slave (originally titled Slowly Candle Burns) was one of the few songs written to directly address Prince's feelings surrounding his acrimonious departure from Warner Bros. An extension of the song, entitled Slave 2 the System, was planned for inclusion but ultimately went unreleased.

New World (originally titled Love 4 1 Another) was inspired by the 1994 Northridge, CA earthquake and originally planned to be the B-side of The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. However, Warner would not allow Prince to release more than one song independently via NPG so the song was shelved until the release of Emancipation.

The Love We Make was written as a tribute to Jonathan Melvoin, Wendy and Susannah's brother and keyboardist for The Smashing Pumpkins, who died of a heroin overdose in July 1996.
