Physical was enormous culturally and was heard EVERYWHERE. Dance clubs, family picnics, roller-discos, TV specials, commercials, news shows…. you name it. And it came at the right time, when Aerobics was a huge US pastime. It was the Macarena of its day, the Old Town Road. It was also far too spicy for most Top 40 stations. (Can you believe it? What would they think of WAP?!?) As a result, airplay was good, but not enough to topple Foreigner. But those sales were big, and offset the reluctance at radio. Also please keep in mind to treat R&R with a grain of salt until the big CHR comeback of 1983… A lot of the stations in their sample were very AC-leaning, giving slightly different results from Billboard - with a big bias against R&B crossover songs. So that explains how Aretha Frankin "Until You Come Back To Me" peak @ #3 then #11 on the radio. And Amii, Anita Ward, and Gladys not having #1 radio hits when they were clearly huge songs at the time. Edit: It also explains how Gladys Neither One Of Us peaked at #2 but didn't even chart on the R&R...I don't understand how Gladys got top ten pop hits but barely any top ten pop radio peaks

Slow Hand was #1 in sales AND airplay but it was still #2. Where did you see that it was #1 in both metrics?

Oh, so not on Billboard then. I think Cash Box also mixed up sales and airplay, like Billboard - but "Slow Hand" was #2 on Cash Box anyway.

So weird people went out to physically(no pun intended) buy singles back in the day wow. So if it was sold out..the only time you could hear it was the radio?

But whats the diff between Cash box and billboard? Cash Box is an entirely different magazine to Billboard, in fact they were rivals for many years.

Or you could get the album And a lot of times labels would put out enough copies to make sure it would hit top ten if the people liked it...but when the song was off the shelf...that meant time to buy the album...in the end it worked out for the labels and the artists

I know billboard did sales and airplay, and if cashbox did sales and airplay...what made the difference in between the two?

I know billboard did sales and airplay, and if cashbox did sales and airplay...what made the difference in between the two? Any company that publishes a chart uses specific data sources. Prior to SoundScan, retail stores were polled individually, so Billboard and Cashbox's sales charts likely had different stores, as well as a different number of stores. HITS! Magazine today has different sales totals than Billboard, for this same reason. Same goes for radio airplay, even today, Mediabase's panel is different than Nielsen's, resulting in different numbers, etc. They also may have different formulas and chart rules.

Everything wasn’t so immediate back then and it wasn’t the hugest deal if you didn’t get a song the second it came out. I used to tape songs off the radio until I found them in the stores. That’s just how it was so you got used to it I guess. There was also less to do back then so really digging into music with your friends and sharing songs were a hobby for more people back then. I love having access to everything now a days but it does kill a lot of the excitement out of things as well.
