Candle in the wind shipped 8 million copies when it came out in 1997. However, it sold 3.4 million copies in its first week, 1.2 million in its second and 786K in the third week. Airplay for the B-side "Something about the way you look tonight" was increasing during this period.

Diana Ross makes history. She is the first female artist with 5 solo #1 hits, and including her 12 as a member of the Supremes, her 17th overall #1 hit. Diana is also the first female musician with a #1 hit in 3 different decades: 12 as a member of the Supremes in the 1960's, 4 as a solo artist in the 1970's, and Upside Down to begin the 1980's. Diana would tack on another #1 hit the following year, Endless Love, a duet with Lionel Richie, to finish with 18 overall #1 hits, the record for most #1 hits by a female musician which stood alone until 2008, and finally broken last December.

The week that the Beatles' single "Help" from their second major motion picture of the same name hit #1 on the Hot 100, it not only became their 9th #1 song in just over a year and a half, it also kept some other very well known artists and songs from attaining either the #1 position or higher positions on the chart for themselves.

Chief among them was Bob Dylan, who came very close to the top of the Hot 100 himself with his classic single "Like A Rolling Stone," which reached its peak of #2 the same week; this song, and "Rainy Day Women #12 and #35" which also peaked at #2 a year later in 1966, would be the closest Dylan would ever come to personally topping the chart.   And the Beach Boys, whose hit single "California Girls" (not to be confused with "California Gurls") couldn't get any higher than #3.  Or "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers, which also peaked that week at #4.  Although "Unchained Melody" would chart again in 1990 when it was used to great effect in the hit movie "Ghost" that was released that year.

This was also the Beatles' 4th consecutive #1 single on the Hot 100 (putting them within striking distance of the Supremes five consecutive #1 singles that they had just achieved the previous June).

Oh yes, the movie was a hit too.  Perhaps not as much with critics this time around, but still with movie going audiences.

When I first heard "Circles", I immediately thought this will be a hit. It did, but it managed to last 39 weeks in Top 10 and currently hanging in the Top 15 after a year. Truly an iconic and legendary song.

The music video on YouTube has over 400 Million views despite being uploaded in 2017. A song from 1995 whose video was uploaded in 2017 has more views than a lot of hits from 2017 have. Absolutely insane, truly a classic.
