After a couple of listens I am absolutely loving this album! I honestly think this might be my favorite one he's put out since Live Like You Were Dying. I'll do a full ranking after I've listened a few more times but "If I Was A Cowboy", "Damn Sure Do", "Not From California", "L.A.", "Doggone" "7500 OBO" and "Gravy" are my favorites so far.

"7500 OBO" and "Sheryl Crow" sound like huge hits to me.

Easily one of his best, although a bit ballad heavy. I'll come back and do a more thorough ranking/review when I've given it a few more full listens.

Sampling "I Need You" in "Hard to Stay Mad At" is an interesting choice!

Sampling "I Need You" in "Hard to Stay Mad At" is an interesting choice! Cowboy In Me music sampled at the beginning and end of If I Was A Cowboy, too.

I really liked most of the album! Some that will take a few more listens, I agree there were a LOT of ballads that are just blending together right now. I feel like they will release one of them as a single looking for another Humble & Kind.... I just want 7500 OBO to be a single as well. First off, DOGGONE. 😭😭😭 I think this might be my favorite even over 7500 OBO. I know it's a country music cliche "oh my dog died" (even though I can't tell you one single song about the subject), but this one was is just so touching and I love the title. My dog of 14 years died last year and I immediately went to thinking of him while listening. Doggone, man's best friend. 😥 I think I love Chevy Spaceship? It was a bit much on first listen but has sounded better and better each time since. I love the samples. They're subtle enough to not make the song feel like clones of the original and are just really cool to hear. Sheryl Crow is one of my favorites, but what an odd choice to go with as the song title? Does she remind you of rock "If It Makes You Happy" Sheryl Crow? Pop "Soak up the Sun" Sheryl Crow? Or country "Photograph" Sheryl Crow? This girl is a mystery. I don't care if I ever hear L.A. again in my life. 😬 I also find it bizarre to have this song and Not From California on the same album.

Listened to this today on a road trip, and it is a VERY solid album! Honestly, I felt like every song was more or less equal. I loved almost everything, and disliked literally nothing The only slight complaint is that the album is VERY consistent from front to back, ie the production doesn't vary much from song to song, so I found myself zoning out a couple times in the second half. It is for that reason that I feel like the album's strongest moments are the ones that make the boldest sonic choices, such as "7500 OBO", "Sheryl Crow", and "Chevy Spaceship"! Definitely loved almost everything, but those were the ones that stood out enough on first listen to recall instantly based on the title alone. I'll definitely be giving this more spins in the near future

If they choose an upbeat song for the next single, it needs to be “7500 OBO” or “Good Taste In Women”. “Hard To Stay Mad At” is solid and a gem. It needs to be a single at some point as well. This is probably his best album on Big Machine.

Finally sat down and dove into this one, and while it started off a little rough for me, it picked up about track 7 and from then thru to the end I was loving it. I'll have to see if the first few tracks on the record wind up being growers, but I wasn't feeling songs like "Chevy Spaceship" and the title track much on first listen. That said, "Hard to Stay Mad At," "Sheryl Crow," "Hold You Tonight," "7500 OBO," "If I Was a Cowboy," and "Doggone" were all fantastic. I'm still loving "I Called Mama" too -- and one of the few times in quite some time where the lead single was actually one of the more high quality songs on the record, so that's nice to see. I get why he left them off since they were released under his prior label and performed poorly, but I feel like "Neon Church" and "Thought About You" could've replaced a couple of the tracks toward the beginning of the album and it would've been a net positive. I guess I should just be thankful that "Way Down" got the axe though.
I'll need more listens to really let everything settle and for the potential for some songs to grow on me that weren't clicking at first, but I'd pick from these as the next 2-3 singles if I were him:
7500 OBO Hard to Stay Mad At Sheryl Crow Doggone
I'd put this one right about on equal footing with Damn Country Music so far.

I'm loving this album and it may be my favorite of his since Set This Circus Down! Very consistent quality and not a song I don't enjoy! I think the back half is stronger which makes play throughs good because it gets better as you go!
Biggest complaint would be it's all a little too similar throughout and could've used a big more variety but Tim's picking some really strong songs here so I can't complain.
Honestly I think "Neon Church" and "Thought About You" would fit right in here so it's a shame they couldn't be added on.
I need to hear the bonus tracks. I sadly wasn't able to get them where I am.
Single wise I'd go
01. "I Called Mama" 02. "7500 OBO" 03. "Hard To Stay Mad At" 04. "Good Taste In Women" 05. "Gravy"*
*Tons of good choices for final single though. "Sheryl Crow", "If I Was A Cowboy", "Damn Sure Do", "Doggone".
And can I just say since nobody's talking about it "War Of Art" may be one of my favorite tracks here!
