Katy is on the decline; I love her and will always cherish the Teenage Dream album because it means a lot to me, but the Smile numbers make sense with how her career has been trending.
Taylor is on a completely different career path and stage right now. If anyone's career could have matched Katy's trend, it was Lady Gaga. They were in similar spots during ARTPOP / Witness, but Gaga managed to rebound hard with A Star is Born and now Chromatica is doing OK.

I was just thinking about it. Katy peaked with Teenage Dream, Taylor peaked with 1989. Smile is Katy's third album since Teenage Dream, just like Folklore is Taylor's third album since 1989. So in a sense Folklore is directly comparable to Smile, it's just crazy that they're performing so differently and Katy has fallen so fast after her peak wait Taylor has managed to remain relevant.

It's been obvious Katy was never coming back for awhile now. Any interest in her as an artist is just absolutely non-existent with the public, its been this way without break since 2017.
She can probably get one more feature hit or maybe some type of semi-viral song (anybody can score a hit in the right place at the right time in streaming era) but she'll never return to being all-around successful and drawing interest as a whole.

If hits become a priority, like other older artists - be a "feature" on a song with someone younger

Somewhere along the line Max Martin started giving the sure-fire hits to other pop girls, or she turned them down. Every Hot 100 number 1 besides Firework is a Max Martin or Dr. Luke production.

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson is only 35, though- granted, it may be considered "old" in today's pop landscape. And it's only been a dozen years since she hit it big. In today's climate, maybe that's considered a lengthy amount of time?

In today's climate, maybe that's considered a lengthy amount of time? If you consider she broke through in 2008, peaked in 2010 but never had a big hit after 2013, that's quite a short span. The interest in her fizzled out so fast.

Itβs interesting to look back on the chart trajectories of big-names to see how they eventually stacked up and compare them to todayβs big names. I donβt think Katyβs case is that surprising or extreme.

OK, Perry's span of scoring big hits was relatively short compared to others. But, it's not like she's getting no airplay. She's getting played at multiple formats; just not near the levels she once did. "Daisies" went top 30 at pop radio, top 10 at Adult Top 40 and nearly top 10 at AC. Has the album's title track been promoted to radio? it's charting in the 20s at AC. The song's very radio-friendly, like most of her material, but at this stage, that probably doesn't matter, unfortunately.

Right. She came with a more mellow approach this time around. Probably unsure of how she wanted the next era to go. We have a final product, and we'll see what comes of it. Things can always turn around and we've seen it before.

Yeah, of course it's not unheard of to have short career spans, but one would expect someone that reached the heights that Perry did, to last longer. Even though Christina's span is somewhat comparable it's not as bad as she peaked early in her career and managed to stay successful for some 7 years after that. If you consider Katy peaked in 2011, and her last hit was in 2013, it looks even more odd that she managed to fall so fast after her peak. BSB and N Sync did had short spans, but I guess that's kind of the norm for boy bands though.

I thought Dark Horse was a hit in 2014π It was a hit all through 2014, not to mention pulling a billion views (when the video only came out in 2014), plus Birthday and TIHWD went Top 40 in 2014. She also had the super bowl in 2015 and a top 10 and 20 in 2017, so I would extend it to 2017... basically until Witness the album dropped. I love Katy for life! Whoever posted that Mariah breakdown gif is my hero though, haha.

I thought Dark Horse was a hit in 2014π It was released as a single in 2013, but it only reached #1 in January 2014, so feel free to add one or two more months to her span.

Mariah bombed in 2001 (11 years after her debut), had 2 underperformed albums, even some of her songs didnt chart on Bubbling Under Hot 100. And she needed overall 5 years to comeback in 2005.
Katy's career fell in 2017, 9 years after her debut. And currently is having her 2nd consecutive underperformed albums. Who knows she can comeback?

Chained To The Rhythm was one of the top 25 biggest worldwide hits of the year in 2017, similar performance to Humble by Kendrick Lamar. If Chained To The Rhythm was not a big hit, neither was Humble (of course it was)
