Those who are up in their feelings about this song plagiarizing "Good Girl" continue to baffle me. The songs are slightly similar because they each have a word that plays off of "girl" in multiple contexts. But sonically, melodically, vocally, etc. they are not even remotely similar. Edit: Besides, Carrie's isn't even a well-done play on words. "He's no good, girl" versus " Hey, good girl" That attempt at plurality is SO forced! I love the song as much as any of us here, but there is absolutely no reason to act like it is the gold standard for all puns related to the word "girl". Carly's song talking to the next girl as well as saying she "knows what happens next, girl" is a significantly better-written juxtaposition. Edit x2: These songs are so different sonically that you could get just as much traction getting mad at Jo Dee Messina for aping Celine Dion's "That's The Way It Is" I actually think “hey next girl” is a lot worse than “hey good girl” who the hell calls anyone a “next girl”? It would also be different if they didn’t literally begin the verses the exact same way “hey…girl.” We would be giving a male artist crap if they released a song saying “hey good boy” “she’s no good, boy” so I don’t feel like pointing out the blatant similarities in hook is all that big of a deal (and wouldn’t say I am up in my feelings at all) and could be a valid reason the callouts are horrible. TOTALLY respect you and your opinion, and agree the production is very different. Just pointing out it’s a bad lyric anyway IMO. ETA: this one also loses originality points for basically ripping off a Michael Ray song as well in the chorus. I was mostly being hyperbolic with references to people being up in their feelings, being mad, etc. :) Totally respect you and your opinions as well! To me this whole Carly/Carrie conversation just feels unnecessarily nit-picky, but it keeps getting brought up every couple months... Like, I bet most of us could name a handful of similar songs for every single song that we listen to, without it diminishing the value of any of them.

Well at least this does become her fourth Mediabase Top 20 as "Next Girl" moves up 3 spots to #18 on Mediabase with a decent bullet of 223.

Well, I just want to say that I don’t like “Next Girl” or Good Girl” and I think Lainey Wilson’s “Small Town, Girl” puts both to shame and she gets bonus points for including a comma in her song title.

This one seems to have been gaining very minimal lately. I wonder if it will pick up once some of the songs ahead of it start their decent from #1. Really hoping they can somehow find a way to milk this one to the top 10.

Really hoping they can somehow find a way to milk this one to the top 10. We will find out in the next few weeks if it will benefit from the departure of Tenille Arts and Gabby Barrett. I could see radio begin to convert this song a bit to fill more female roles in the top 10/20. Then again, I could also see them call it good with Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson, and P!nk on the KU song, and let this one die. It had a really promising start but it looks like callouts are hurting it. And as previously mentioned, it's a traditional-leaning song.

Eh, I feel like we are finding out now given the fact that it has been close to a month now since Tenille and Gabby peaked and both have pretty much left all the charts (Gabby will leave next week on Billboard) and it seems like the female songs that are taking advantage of it are Miranda, Lainey, Maren Morris ("Chasing After You") and maybe Lady A. I do think this will last a bit longer since it isn't completely stalling out and is doing better than say the Keith Urban/P!nk song or Tim McGraw/Tyler Hubbard song.

My thoughts on this song are well known, but with the bad callouts I think they should drop it soon and release a single from her new expanded version of "29" - she has a lot of buzz from the ACMs and etc. so I think her star is still super bright despite this song not being well-received outside of this board.

Yeah they're gonna have to think of an exit strategy sooner than later. I do think there's a handful of songs that will leave soon (Dylan Scott once he is done pushing this week, Keith Urban/P!nk, Tim McGraw/Tyler Hubbard) but with today's Mediabase Callout Scores the callout has really taken a turn for the worse as "Next Girl" as her negative score shot up nearly 2 points, and all the positive scores (Fav, Net Positive, Positive, Potential) all went down a considerable margin and she is pretty comfortably at the bottom of the callout scores.
I think with enough luck, I think Carly Pearce can get a Top 15 on Mediabase and a Top 20 on Billboard aka "She's Mine" last year, but I just can't see with those callout scores Carly getting a Top 10. Because with the way the callout has been trending, I can't see it getting better.
I will still contend the next single should be "Should've Known Better" as that has been the one song on the EP that has had a solid amount of interest (I mean the lyric video has almost as many likes as the music video for this song) and does sound like a song in the vein of "Every Little Thing" and "I Hope You're Happy Now".

^ agree with this as I just checked the sales chart and atm Should've Known Better is outselling Next Girl. Honestly I'm just ready for them to move on from this song as it never interested me in the way some of her other newer songs have.

Another week of Mediabase callout getting worse with "Next Girl" being right on the edge of a score of 20 in terms of negative, and ranking last in every positive category. "Next Girl" should move up to #18 on Mediabase if Carly can hold off Luke Bryan.
But man the callout scores are slipping very fast and I am quickly starting to think within the next couple of weeks country radio is going to stall "Next Girl" out, especially since there are other female songs they have more incentive to play ("Settling Down", "Things A Man Oughta Know") that are connecting much better and testing better (Lainey Wilson isn't on the Mediabase Callout but on Monday Morning Intel she has been ranking pretty damn high).
I am happy Carly Pearce got the Top 20 hit on both charts and continues to cement herself solidly in the country music sphere, but they really should cut bait when there are other songs on the EP that I think could really do even more for her career.

She should just change the single at this point. She being well-liked by radio people will help the new single climb more quickly than the others.

Yeah, maybe see if it can move up a little more into the top 20, but if callout is that bad, then top 10 hopes for this are probably pretty low. With how country radio operates though, I can see a scenario where this still flounders around on the chart not doing much for several more months and I'd rather that not happen and see them just move on to something new asap.

Yeah, we're creeping up on nine months with this single on the charts. If the callouts are really that horrible, then I think it's time to cut the losses and move on to "Should've Known Better."

This is by far my favourite single of hers, but it's looking like it's done what it's going to do. It would make the most sense to release "29" or "Should've Known Better" asap.

I agree with this (or Didn't Do). I'm beginning to wonder if they are waiting for this to hit number 1 in Canada, where it is doing very well - it's currently number 3. It would likely be top-15 here in the States, and they could drop it then - because as others have said - I think its going to do what it's going to do. Pushing it to the top 10 is just going to slow momentum, which I think Carly still has.

Would love to see them release her cover of Kathy Mattea’s “Eighteen Wheels And A Dozen Roses” as a single. Would be crazy to see if it could become a #1 over 30 years after the original version.

Not getting any better on the callouts (but also, who are they polling - all four songs featuring female vocals are in the bottom six songs #eyeroll)
But as we've said, probably time to move on.

Move on to Should’ve Known Better or Didn’t Do. This has pretty much done what it’s going to do. This isn’t going #1 nor top 10. Capitalize on the Opry induction next month with a new single.

Since “Settling Down” at this point is likely going recurrent on Sunday along with “Forever After All”, if “Next Girl” finishes at #15, they should let it go after that point. There’s no point in pushing it any further as the song isn’t really connecting with people. Bad callouts & weak sales/streaming. I think the obvious new single pick would be “Should’ve Known Better”, but if her team is wanting to start the rollout for the next project, I’d hope they would release the lead single from that instead.

This single is fine, but it’s the least impactful song on “29” to me. It’ll be interesting to see what they go with, but I think “Messy” could do really well at radio.

I have been waiting to make "#1 in Canada!" post, but this has been stuck at #2 for 4 weeks or so now. Jade Eagleson and Brett Kissel were push in the past 2 weeks, so they got #1, but this week, Jason Aldean's crap took #1 over this song by 12 plays. :'( (# of plays determines the ranking in CAN). Hope this can still take #1 at least in Canada.

How much longer do we think this is going to be pushed? I can’t see it going any higher than Top 15. It’s so clear this song isn’t connecting all that well and I really think Carly’s team needs to push something else.

I saw from a programmer on Twitter that this one was supposedly to be moved to medium/heavy rotation starting the week of 7/19-7/25. I don’t know how that will translate for future updates (if it does at all). I know Big Machine probably wants top 10 but I just don’t see it happening.

I'm checked out from country radio, but I had only just bought Carly Pearce because I was curious about her and was discovering her for the first time, only to hear this and realize I bought an old album, lol. I really like this song, too. It's a shame she didn't have more singles from the last album though; "Love Has No Heart" is gorgeous and "Dashboard Jesus" sounds like something that would've done decently?
