The title track or bust. That is too damn good to be paid dust, and I would like for it NOT to be another IWABLT that gets ignored despite the launch to superstardom it would give her.

Just did the radiotraks survey for a new single off the ep. I could really see any of them doing well, but my personal preference would be "Messy" or "Day One" with "29" a close third.

Was comparing how long it took IHYHN to reach #1 when it was where Next Girl is currently and it took it 5 more months. If Next Girl followed the same timeframe it would go #1 in September. I want her to go #1 as much as the next one but part of me hopes they drop this once it hits top 10 in favor of one of the better songs on the EP that would be more of a career hit for her.

Got 1 add this week meaning it's officially been added by all stations now!
17 songs ahead of her still haven't accomplished this, I still think this is a #1 in the future.

Does radio know something we don't? This song's daily and weekly gains have been abysmal. It's starting to look like they might drop this for another song soon.
I get that it totally still has the steam to go the distance to #1, but it's spotty airplay has been pretty aligned with the new single survey sent out.

Made its debut on callouts this week. Overall, nothing too bad but just mediocre. The good news is that there are clearly potential improvements in some of the scores tabulated since it has the lowest familiarity rate.
I'm curious to see what radio decides to do with this since it has been struggling in the 20s for months now. If they feel like the scores are not good enough, then I say BMG should push it to Top 20 and then send the second single afterwards.

I think the scores are good enough for a top 10 peak and I think that’s what they’ll probably go for. Idk if they’re good enough for a #1 peak though, unless they improve a little.

The scores look pretty similar to "More Hearts Than Mine" when it first debuted, so there's that. Other than negative being somewhat high compared to most of the chart, I don't really see anything that "justifies" radio converting this so slowly so far.

It's been having extremely slow gains these past few weeks/months. I'm not sure why stations aren't converting this especially when every station has added it...like what's going on?

I mean look at "Next Girl" callout scores though in comparison to the competition, Carly has the second lowest Pop Score, 4th lowest positive, 3rd lowest Favorite Score, 4th highest negative. The scores themselves aren't bad as in the number themselves, but in comparison to everyone else right now on the chart besides "Shallow", "Next Girl" is lagging a bit behind its peers. Callout scores are really high right now and while Carly's are okay. They aren't great by any means so I am not shocked when radio is slower to convert this when the sales are mediocre and pretty much every song above her has better callout scores.

29, the title track, is terrific, although I think the second line in the chorus "I held on for dear life, but I still fell off the horse" is seriously clumsy, and should have been replaced with a line like, "I always thought that we would stay the course."

Except the song is not about another person or relationship. It is specifically about Carly - noted by all the "I" statements: -I got married/divorced -I held on for dear life/I still fell off the horse -I was gonna live it up/but now I'm never gonna live it down. From a songwriting perspective it makes perfect sense.

Hopefully with Tenille & Gabby dropping soon country radio will make some more room for some women who are a little bit lower on the chart. I think Carly & Lainey will both make the top 20 in the next couple weeks which would be great since they are both really good songs.

Ugh, the callout keeps slipping as "Next Girl" Pop Score is at 74 which while not bad is down a bit from where she started (77), and while her Negative Score has gone down a bit, the Positive, Favorite scores are also falling from their original spot and at a quicker rate than the Negative.
"Next Girl" should hit the Top 20 soon at least on Mediabase, but if it is gonna want a shot at Top 10, the callout scores have to start improving

I find it interesting radio was pretty willing to take Hide the Wine to the Top 20 (peaking at #11 on Mediabase) even if that one has way worse callouts. However, as we've seen over the years, Country radio has taken the callouts much more seriously now. So while this has a clear path to Top 20, I can see it missing the Top 10 if the scores do not improve. I'm going to guess a Top 15 peak before Big Machine chooses to move on to single #2.

I think Big Machine is going to milk this to the top 10 at the very least. Rascal Flatt’s song was able to climb a good bit despite poor callouts; so I think they’ll do the same for this. Probably will push through July then drop it for the next single. Been keeping the live performance of “Didn’t Do” on repeat lately and think that might be a good next single choice. There’s a good deal of buzz around it despite being unreleased. (Or if she wants to do another one of the EP we all know I’m partial to “Should’ve Known Better” lol.)

ouch on the radio callouts. Not sure why they are this bad. Most likely because its a re-hash copy of a Carrie Underwood song from 2012, sung by a less talented vocalist. ETA: Should've Known Better would have been received much better, IMO.

I mean, it may be dead last on that list, but the actual numbers aren’t *that* bad. Lately pretty much every song that makes country radio callouts tests well, so even though this is last, it’s not testing horribly. Definitely gives radio less of an incentive to play it though, I guess.

I mean their hooks are basically almost the same. “I know what happens next, girl” compared to “He’s no good, girl.”

Those who are up in their feelings about this song plagiarizing "Good Girl" continue to baffle me. The songs are slightly similar because they each have a word that plays off of "girl" in multiple contexts. But sonically, melodically, vocally, etc. they are not even remotely similar. Edit: Besides, Carrie's isn't even a well-done play on words. "He's no good, girl" versus " Hey, good girl" That attempt at plurality is SO forced! I love the song as much as any of us here, but there is absolutely no reason to act like it is the gold standard for all puns related to the word "girl". Carly's song talking to the next girl as well as saying she "knows what happens next, girl" is a significantly better-written juxtaposition. Edit x2: These songs are so different sonically that you could get just as much traction getting mad at Jo Dee Messina for aping Celine Dion's "That's The Way It Is"

Kinda like how Brooks & Dunn’s “Play Something Country” copied Mary Chapin Carpenter’s “Shut Up And Kiss Me”. Now having said that because the lyrics and production of “Next Girl” are better I do much prefer it to “Good Girl”. Even vocally I actually appreciate NG a bit more, Carrie is the more skilled vocalist but I never really liked her vocal performance on GG.

It would also be different if they didn’t literally begin the verses the exact same way “hey…girl.” We would be giving a male artist crap if they released a song saying “hey good boy” “she’s no good, boy” so I don’t feel like pointing out the blatant similarities in hook is all that big of a deal (and wouldn’t say I am up in my feelings at all) and could be a valid reason the callouts are horrible. TOTALLY respect you and your opinion, and agree the production is very different. Just pointing out it’s a bad lyric anyway IMO. ETA: this one also loses originality points for basically ripping off a Michael Ray song as well in the chorus.

I will say I am not too shocked the callout is less than ideal the more I think about it. This is a neo-traditional song sung by a female artist. I know country radio has gotten more accepting of females (we've already had 3 Mediabase #1s this year) and heck even traditional country music to a certain extent, but this song does stand out for being both a female song and neo traditional. I do think it will make the Top 20 tomorrow night on Mediabase, but time is ticking and the callout needs to start improving as while the Negative score isn't too bad and dare I say okay, the Net Positive score is BAD.
