Speaking of Weeknd, that Calvin collab came and went quickly? I'm surprised it didn't even gain decent traction in Europe.

Calvin kinda seems past his peak at this point, but DJs have it the easiest in terms of comeback hits since they'll always just be able to have another relevant artist completely sing the song.

Quick question for all of you who do predictions... The solo version of I Hope by Gabby Barrett is the only one that's been credited on the Hot 100. Currently, the Charlie Puth version is killing it on radio (and still growing) and the duet version is also much higher on sales. Streaming seems to be the place where the solo version is ahead. Can anyone estimate how much more ahead the streaming version is and if Charlie Puth is anywhere near actually nabbing a Hot 100 credit?

DJs seem to be slightly out of favor now in general. Calvin, Kygo, Zedd, DJ Snake...it's been a second since any of them had a really huge hit. Probably not since "The Middle"?

Well Savage Love is a hit in America and humongous globally, and that technically has a DJ-esque artist who is credited as lead?

Roses is also a huge hit, and that is essentially a DJ hit. The DJ completely made it into a new song versus the original.

I guess, but Jawsh-Whatever and Imanbek aren't exactly the same thing as those others, at least not right now. Maybe they'll start a new wave of DJ-driven hits. But the scene now is definitely not what it was a few years ago.

It's a matter of how much bigger the Charlie Puth version is on radio.

I Hope's points last week:
Sales 8% (Remix 5-6% vs. Original 2-3%)
Streaming 38% (Original version probably has 90%+ of the streaming points so... ~34%-36% Original vs. 2-4% Remix)
Radio 54% (???)

The CP version had 8-9% of the combined sales/streaming points, so it needed 41-42% out of 54% (radio %) to be credited... that'd be ~77% of I Hope's airplay.

Last week, Country (where I'm assuming they're still playing the original version) was ~29% of I Hope's audience while Top 40/AC/HAC (they're probably playing the CP version) were ~71%.

That’s true, and “Come And Go” from Juice WRLD has given Marshmello another big hit (though I’d say Marshmello’s name hasn’t really been the big driver for that song’s success). Still, the DJ-as-pop-star scene isn’t the same now as it was a few years ago. If/when that trend comes around again it’ll be interesting to see if any of the big 2010s names come back with it. Will Calvin Harris, David Guetta, or Zedd ever see the top ten again? Time will tell...

^It's still possible for Blinding Lights to stay at #1 on Radio Songs this week. Nielsen's radio panel is different than Mediabase's and it seems like it favors BL more than BYG (BL's Mediabase-to-Nielsen multiplier > BYG's multiplier).

Not to start another discussion of what a one hit wonder is or isn't but both tracks seem like enough of a novelty/viral thing that they're probably not gonna be the start of a long string of hits for either DJ a la David Guetta/Calvin Harris.

The Jawsh guy is only credited as a lead because of a possible lawsuit.

The first turn at #1 for "The Twist".   This first time around it was the latest dance craze for the kids, and the adults had nothing to do with its popularity.   It peaked, and then fell down and off the chart.  A year later, it would re-enter the chart and make it all the way up to #1 again, this time fueled by famous society people who were photographed doing the "twist" at famous night clubs of the day like the Peppermint Lounge in NYC.  From there, it went on to became a nationwide and then a worldwide phenomenon throughout 1961-62; even bigger than during its original run.

It remains to this day the only Hot 100 single/song to go to #1 twice on the chart.

"Eve of Destruction" was written by songwriter P.F. Sloan and given to a number of mid-60's artists to sing, but it is the version by Barry McGuire that is the most famous and which also managed to make it to #1 on the Hot 100 in 1965.  Ironically, opposition to the song is partially what helped make it more popular.  A lot of the media didn't like the song, and it was banned by numerous radio stations at the time because of what were considered its "controversial" lyrics.

During the song's verses: it criticizes the Vietnam War; the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the middle east; the draft at the time; the overarching threat of all out nuclear war; the current civil rights movement (with a direct reference to the Selma, Alabama march in 1965 that resulted in a number of marchers being beaten and having water hoses turned on them full blast by the police); and the American space program.

Not your usual subjects for a pop-rock song in 1965, but to paraphrase what a wise man once said, the times they were a changing.



A lot of people over the years have noted that Barry McGuire's vocal sounds especially rough on the single (which actually helps the song's atmosphere, he sounds angry because he IS angry).  This was actually due to the fact that McGuire's vocal (which he did in one take), was only supposed to be temporary, and he planned on laying down a smoother vocal later on.  But the song "leaked" to a local radio station soon after the studio session, and they started playing it with his original rough vocal, and he then realized it was too late to change it.
