I've always found "Focus" overhated. It still bops tbh. Plus it has aged ten times better than "Problem" :sip2:

In all fairness though, I do love "Problem", but if it wasn't for Jamie Foxx's adlibs, I would have definitely preferred "Focus" overall. The horn breakdown is phenomenal and I love the choreography. Also, in my opinion, the music video is probably her best pre-"sweetener".

"Focus" was actually incredible, I'll never understand why people couldn't get behind that. Max Martin coming back on for this record has me very interested. streets saying - 14 songs - consistent and coherent theme about sex - Collabs: Doja, The Weeknd and Ty Dolla $ign - 2 music videos already filmed those collabs do nothing for me lmao 100% for an RnB album if it's anything like a hoe'd up Yours Truly. Her pop output has been s**t since Dangerous Woman anyway and even that album's standouts borrowed heavily from RnB.

I really thought the earliest we'd get a new album would be in Q4 2021 so I was caught completely off guard when I saw the news. She's put out 4 albums in 2 years and yes I'm taking into account Charlie's Angels since she was the main curator so I expect it to be very of the moment but with an Ari twist. If this is indeed going to be her SEX/Erotica phase then I'm gonna love it.

I think "Positions" is going to be more akin to a "Janet." era over an "Erotica" era, but we'll have to wait and see. 😉

Unless you’re a diehard Pharrell fan there’s nothing memorable about it (assuming you’ve never worked retail, then the mind-numbing irony of having to hear “Successful” on the job probably left you traumatized with permanent impostor syndrome). Just imo but it’s an overrated album, singles included.

Hmmm. I can't even say she had a bad/worst album. sweetner/yours truly is tied at top for me. The split production with Max/Pharrell was a good combo. If I had to choose, I'd say I dont go back to My Everything as much.

I actually think Sweetener is one of her most memorable - no serious trendchasing, off-kilter production/overall weirdness, etc. She also seemed to be having fun. Plus, one of my all-time fave Ari songs (Goodnight n Go) is on it.

I only like the three singles on Sweetener. The rest is trash. It's like Madonna's Hard Candy, a stain on her discography.

Plus, one of my all-time fave Ari songs (Goodnight n Go) is on it. It’s an honest mistake spelling error lol. I agree with you that the “Goodnight n Go” remake is the best song, but the fact that the standout is a remake says a lot about the overall quality of the rest of the album. I also don’t really agree that off-kilter/weird production automatically makes it good or memorable (for the right reasons). Doesn’t help that the album is attached to Pete Whatshisname at the hip. That’s just my opinion though, not trying to convince you otherwise. 🤷🏼♂️

Sweetener is a fun album. I appreciate Ari trying something different with some of the songs. Plus, the singles are still typical Ari. NTLTC, GIAW, and breathin were a perfect 1-2-3 punch.

The singles for "sweetener" were amazing, but deep cuts like "better off", "everytime", "successful", and "get well soon" are terrific as well, and definitely deserve a revisit from those who aren't too fond of the album.
The former two in particular are so personal and well-written - precursors to the vulnerability and transparency showcased throughout "thank u, next".

I had always said "sweetener" was the light album, then "thank u, next" was the dark album.

When NTLTC was released, I couldn't believe how great it was but then she released GIAW and couldn't believe my ears because it seemes too perfect to be real breathin was the icing on the cake There are some duds on sweetener but nothing that's unlistenable (I even enjoyed TLIC for two weeks lol) Also "pete davidson" is still a great interlude Anyways, overall it's probably only her 4th best (so far) which says a lot about her discography
I can't wait for Friday!!

Sweetener is my least favorite Ariana album mainly because of Pharrell's production. But I did like a couple of the songs (i.e. God Is a Woman and Breathin - which still bothers me how there isn't an apostrophe after the 'n').
I'm glad Thank You, Next came out so soon after because it made up for it for me at least. I'm excited for whatever this new album entails.

Sweetener is an album she had to make as in she had no other option but to address, even subtly, the events in her life from May 2017 onward whether she felt comfortable doing so or not. If Sweetener was skipped and she went straight to a TUN-like album she'd get serious backlash so it was an album she had to get out of the way asap so she could move forward on a clean slate. I don't think she was having fun while creating it as evident by how fast she moved on from it but also because that lack of joy was reflected in the final product as the main criticism about it is that it sounded lifeless. With that said, it gave us NTLTC which remains her magnum opus so I can't hate it too much.

I spent the other day relistening to that masterpiece and it has not aged one bit Easily one of the best R&B albums with a heavy focus on sexuality of all time, probably my top favorite R&B album period.

The Pete attachment is unfortunate but it doesn't really hinder the project/music itself, imo. As for GNG, it's not TECHNICALLY a cover since she didn't use either of Imogen's verses (although, given how much better they are than the ones Ari served, I find that part to be a miss.) Either way, I am excited for what's next.
