I have always thought Michael Ray was never gonna be long for the genre unless he had that defining hit that takes him to the next level as none of "Kiss You In The Morning", "Think A Little Less", and "One That Got Away" were that big of hits outside of radio. This song could still be a hit but the start is certainly not encouraging. Yep I am eating crow literally less than a week after (and as someone who doesn't care for this song and who really doesn't care for the artist I am kind of pissed) as this song entered the Mediabase Top 50 with 377 spins gained the past week. I have to imagine this is something like we saw a few years ago with "One That Got Away" where it got a random week where a good chunk of stations all played it and bumped it's audience all up at once in a single week (just find it bullshit and I wanna give a hardcore fuck you to country radio for never having this ever be for a female artist) which allowed it a lot of weeks to burn to get it to #1 on the chart since it essentially skipped the 40s and 50s like we are probably gonna see here.

The reasoning behind this week’s big gain is that “Whiskey and Rain” was played on Entercom radio’s syndicated midday and night time radio shows each day which virtually all Entercom radio stations air now.
Every week radio.com (Entercom) selects a “country hit pick of the week” and its played all week long on radio.com stations. Whiskey and Rain was last weeks pick. This week’s pick is Lee Brice “Memory I Don’t Mess With”

Yeah, I think any reservations anyone had about this one potentially not being a hit are absolutely gone out the window already, lol. It's definitely not gonna stay on this trajectory and race up the charts, but it's looking like there's no way this isn't at least another future top 20 hit for him.

It is VERY interesting "One That Got Away" kinda did the same thing - just skipping the 40s all together. His team has the right strategy I guess!

Is there a thread somewhere on the board that shows country artists real names? I’ve always thought to myself what if the artists all actually went by their real names. For instant instead of Michael Ray what if he went by his real name Michael Roach?

I never did give my thoughts on this song, so let me just say that it's pretty great! It's definitely one of my favorites from Michael (and yes "One That Got Away" is a guilty pleasure of mine ). I'd listened to it at first for the October New Releases rankdown and between this and "Next Girl" from his ex-wife, Carly Pearce, I felt that hers was the more instant for me. A couple more spins here and there of this one, however, and I can say this one definitely has grown on me! Seeing as how "One That Got Away" skipped the 40s altogether and eventually hit the Top 5 on BB, I have to wonder if "Whiskey and Rain" skipping the 40s is good indication that we'll see a similar finish for it once all is said and done.

Whiskey and Rain will probably slip back into the 40s or even 50s ton this Mondays chart. It will lose a lot of the spins on the Entercom stations it had from the week before.

Wow, this song is incredible! The production is very late 90s/early 00s, and it's really giving me Tracy Byrd/Tracy Lawrence vibes. The fiddle is amazing. I hope this turns into a big hit for him.

Back down to #58 this week, after losing all of the syndicated spins.

I think this is his best song yet and see the somewhat slow start as just him not being an established enough artist. Hopefully at the end of its run it will be by far the biggest hit of his career.

Michael Ray got together with his band and performed a few new songs from his album, plus "Think A Little Less" at the very end.
I absolutely ADORED this. "Holy Water" just screams 'single' to me. It's so dark, swampy, and COUNTRY! The fiddle in it was also heavenly. And then he sang "Whiskey and Rain" which, absolutely slayed me. When it was just his voice and the fiddle... have mercy. He also sang "Picture" and "Just The Way I Am" from the album and they were really great as well!
I highly recommend everyone watch this... even if you don't think you like him! Just give it a shot. I don't think you'll regret it. SO Good!

All of the new songs he performed in that showcase from his new album sound AMAZING. He just keeps getting better and better as his career goes along and I fully expect that his third album will easily best his first two, and I am really looking forward to it!

2/3 for me. I LOVE PICTURE.
Holy crap, what a great song.
Holy Water is good too - Just The Way I Am is a fine album track, but needs to be nothing more.
With some other great songs in the hopper, I wonder how long they are going to keep pushing this. I'm an optimstic person, but this has been spinning its wheels for weeks

"Picure" was released Friday. First off love the song, but after listening to it a few times the intro sounds so much like the intro to "Love Triangle" by Raelynn. Also, the chorus reminds me of a song and I cannot figure out what it is. If anybody has listened to it or notices the same thing, could you throw out any suggestions? It's just bugging me lol, but love the song!

I know chart runs are a lot longer nowadays but this song along with a few others (this, Little Big Town, LoCash, Chris Janson, Riley Green, and Larry Fleet) haven't been doing much of anything for months now. Maybe this song can turn around but this song feels like it's been doing nothing noteworthy since Feburary and even with the housecleaning happening on the charts this song still feels like it's not moving the radio.

Something needs to change with radio airplay. I'm not against longer chart runs, but when they are on the chart for 30 weeks and haven't cracked the top 25 or so it's ridiculous. Out of the artists raylatch98 mentioned above I have only heard LBT (when released and not since the first few weeks), Janson (the few weeks before it went recurrent and not since it came back on), and Fleet (early on). My main station has played every other LoCash song to death but has never played the current one. Ray and Green I haven't heard once on either station here. You'd think at some point in a 30 week run it would get played during the day? One thing I noticed on Billboard recently, well looking at the BDS charts, is that on the Indicator chart (I know no one cares about that one lol) they seem to move on from songs faster. Settling Down has been recurrent for several weeks on there. How They Remember You has bounced back and forth a few times between the Indicator and Indicator recurrent chart. Somebody Like That went recurrent much earlier too. I wonder if they have a stricter rule for it? EDIT: To clarify my 2 main country stations are on the main panel for both Billboard and Mediabase.

Also...does any given IHeart or Cumulus station have ANY playlist-programming freedom at a station-level? Or is that completely done company wide?

It’s just making radio AirPlay less and less important to the success of an artist/song. Streaming/sales are the way everyone is learning about these songs and hearing them. If they don’t fix the chart runs (30 weeks is enough for a song to get to #1, not #41) it’s going to stay that way. I honestly think labels will stop paying for play and just settle for 25-30 weeks wherever they peak as consumers continue to gobble songs up through other means.

Pulled in another 10 adds this week, so I'm still maintaining that this one will be a hit in the end, despite yet another painfully long chart run. So far he's had 5/6 of his singles make the top 20, and the one that missed (his last one, "Her World or Mine") still made it to #22, so he's got a pretty good batting average thus far; and with adds continuing to come in for "Whiskey and Rain" and it starting to cut its way through the 30s after lingering in the 40s and 50s forever, things are looking good right now.

The sales for this one were dragging for quite awhile but in the past week or two, they've really taken off and now it's right outside the top 100 on iTunes. It also has a pretty healthy bullet and has been putting up some nice gains @ radio. I think this one, despite yet another very slow climb for Michael Ray, is looking to be a pretty sizable hit for him in the end.

Settling Down went at least 2 months ago, and I was surprised it never went back like other songs have recently. In fact How They Remember You jumped back and forth from there to recurrent a few times.
