Beyond Radio Tim’s Top 150, October 11, 2020
2 1 DUA LIPA Hallucinate 1 12
I can’t remember the last time a dance-pop song went to #1 on my chart. Earlier this year Dua Lipa came close with the song “Future Nostalgia”. She’s had a great year on my chart though interesting that 2 songs not released to radio in the States are my favorites.
1 2 DOVES Prisoners 1(2) 13
The second single from the ethereal Brit band’s first album in 11 years has a great combo of strummy guitar, an atmospheric backdrop, and a chugging beat. They had previously reached #2 on my chart back in 2002 with “Caught By The River”.
4 3 SAINT MOTEL Preach 3 14
This marks the L.A. indie Band’s 3th appearance in my top 5 and 6th in my top 10. This is a fun hand-clappy slice of electro-pop. In July they peaked at #6 with “A Good Song Never Dies”.
5 4 DMA'S Criminals 4 9
Aussie 3 piece band makes my top 5 for the 1st time this alt-pop ballad.
8 5 THE VAMPS Married In Vegas 5 8
The British boy band is currently in the UK top 25 with happy little ditty. Looks like they might best the #3 peak of 2018’s “Just My Type”.
3 6 THE LICKERISH QUARTET Lighthouse Spaceship 1(3) 9
The almost Jellyfish reunion was a welcome surprise for me. Like me wrapped in an old comfortable blanket. Imbued with harmony and a Beatlesque quality. The 3 other tunes from their debut EP “Threesome, Vol. 1” are further down the chart.
13 7 STRUTS f/ROBBIE WILLIAMS Strange Days 7 5
The British glam boys just released their album of the same name today. They recorded the album in 10 days. Nice to see them teaming up with one of my favs. Williams has seen 79 songs chart for me since 1999. “Another Hit of Showmanship” is #36 this week and getting Alternative airplay.
7 8 BASTILLE f/ GRAHAM COXON What You Gonna Do??? 7 9
This is a bit on the harder edge for Bastille and it works well. The follow-up “Survivin” goes in a completely different direction and is getting quick attention at Pop and Hot AC.
6 9 SHINEDOWN Atlas Falls 1(3) 19
16 weeks in my top 10. 3 at #1 and 5 weeks at #2. The song was originally recorded in 2012 during the sessions for the “Amaryllis” album. In contention for the best song on my chart in 2020. The other is a 20-year-old song “In The City” by Hanson that recently spent 19 weeks in my top 10. This week it is #50.
19 10 I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME Leave Me Alone 10 8
This Salt Lake City duo came together after stints in Panic At The Disco! And Falling In Reverse. This is their 2nd appearance in my top 10, after “Choke” last year.
12 11 NOTHING BUT THIEVES Real Love Song 11 15
This UK band’s 3rd album “Moral Panic” is slated for released next Friday. It has been preceded by 5 tracks. “Is Eberybody Going Crazy?” reached #4 in May and “Impossible” is at #117 this week. Today they released “Phobia”
15 12 JOHNNY HATES JAZZ Spirit Of Love 12 13
Yes this is the group that had #2 hit in 1988 called “Shattered Dreams”. This song transports me back to the ‘70s in a great way. Breezy and light. Think “Love Is The Answer”, Seals and Croft or Gino Vanelli.
24 13 ROYAL REPUBLIC Superlove 13 4
I love some quirky rock with a bit of pop and a groove. This Swedish band fits the mold. Last year they just missed my weekly top 50 with “Anna-Leigh”.
16 14 THE KILLERS My Own Soul's Warning 14 16
Another epic song from the Las Vegas band. One of the guest musicians on this track is Roger Joseph Manning Jr. who is a member of the Lickerish Quartet. He also moves up to #28 with a solo song “The Quickening” from 2008. A song from his mid-‘90s band Imperial Drag, “Zodiac Sign” clocks in at #40 this week. I use the intro to that song on one of the recent podcasts. I discover so much old music I’ve never heard before doing the podcast and writing my blog entries.
18 15 SEMISONIC You're Not Alone 15 12
A welcome return from the band that hadn’t released anything since 2001. Lead singer and songwriter has been busy during the last 20 years writing songs for others including Adele, Taylor Swift and a myriad of others. “All It Would Take” is moving up at #33 and “Basement Tapes” is waiting in the wings.
