I’m creating this thread for people to post their lists of songs that should’ve been hits in a given year, but weren’t. There’s no formal definition of what is and is not a hit, but I think most people would set the standard at being on the year end hot 100. My personal standard is being one of the 100 biggest songs of a year after condensing every chart run into one year (to catch songs caught between years), or being an international hit (YE 100 hit in Canada, the UK and Australia). But yeah, feel free to post your own rankings for any given year

For 2019, my list looks like 1. Intro-DaBaby 2. Heartache Medication-Jon Pardi 3. Rainbow-Kacey Musgraves 4. 1, 2 Many-Luke Combs ft. Brooks & Dunn 5. Juice-Lizzo 6. Lovely-Khalid & Billie Eilish 7. The Archer-Taylor Swift 8. Boy With Luv-BTS ft. Halsey 9. Mob Ties-Drake 10. Nice to Meet Ya-Niall Horan
HMs -Motivation-Normani -Antisocial-Ed Sheeran ft. Travis Scott -you should see me in a crown-Billie Eilish -Calma-Pedro Capó & Farruko -Faucet Failure-Ski Mask the Slump God -On My Way to You-Cody Johnson -BLOW-Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars & Chris Stapleton -Right Back-Khalid -Light On-Maggie Rogers -Don’t Feel Like Crying-Sigrid
And for anyone who’s wondering, Nothing Breaks Like a Heart was an international hit, and Take What You Want was caught between years

I also have a pretty strong 2018 list
1. Lucky You-Eminem ft. Joyner Lucas 2. Sober-Demi Lovato 3. Five More Minites-Scotty McCreery 4. Mona Lisa-Lil Wayne ft. Kendrick Lamar 5. Getaway Car-Taylor Swift 6. Done For Me-Charlie Puth ft. Kehlani 7. Broken Halos-Chris Stapleton 8. On the Loose-Niall Horan 9. Strangers-Sigrid 10. Space Cowboy-Kacey Musgraves
HMs -No Roots-Alice Merton -Candy Paint-Post Malone -Growing Pains-Alessia Cara -Head Above Water-Avril Lavigne -Sit Next to Me-Foster the People -Smile-Lil Duval ft. Snoop Dogg & Ball Greezy -Best Shot-Jimmie Allen -Say Amen (Saturday Night)-Panic! At the Disco -Lost in Japan-Shawn Mendes -Lean Wit Me-Juice WRLD -Ocean Eyes-Billie Eilish
Considering how much I hated the hits in 2018 and how few good songs there were, this list showing what could’ve been is especially painful. The HMs are just in the order that I thought of them, but No Roots would’ve been #3 on my best hits list.

My 2017 list would be
1. Perfect Places-Lorde 2. Versace on the Floor-Bruno Mars 3. Liability-Lorde 4. Hard Times-Paramore 5. Cut to the Feeling-Carly Rae Jepsen 6. The Story of OJ-Jay Z 7. Ain’t My Fault-Brothers Osbourne 8. 4:44-Jay Z 9. Homemade Dynamite-Lorde ft. Khalid, SZA & Post Malone 10. Heartache on the Dancefloor-Jon Pardi
No HMs because I still need to do more research on that year, but for what it’s worth, I didn’t forget Green Light, Symphony or This Town. The first two were both international hits, and This Town was caught between years, so they all qualify as hits

Thanks for sharing this you guys. A lot of these songs were really ones I enjoyed and it was pretty painful that they didn't resonate with American audiences the same way that they did for me and many others.

Half of the songs listed in this thread were hits in my book, lol. I guess everyone does have different definitions.

Contenders for 2020 definitely include:
- "SUGAR" by BROCKHAMPTON (especially with the amazing remix they did with Dua Lipa) - "Physical" by Dua Lipa (fortunately, the rest of the world gave it the love it deserved) - "Be Kind" by Marshmello and Halsey (I was so sure this was going to be a radio darling) - "Over Now" by Calvin Harris and The Weeknd (I'm still obsessed with this song. Such a shame it underperformed) - "Ride It" by DJ Regard (another case of European hit that failed to achieve the same success in the US) - "bloody valentine" by Machine Gun Kelly - "One Night Standards" by Ashley McBryde (the way it stalled at the 70s-90s was so frustrating to watch)

Insanely strong list, even in comparison to other “should’ve been hits” lists. Every song is a 10/10, as well as a number of HMs. And this is with me counting Poetic Justice, Skyfall and Rap God as actual hits. Definitely doesn’t hurt that Merry Go Round is my choice for country song of the decade, and is on my GOAT list
