Lana del Rey is delaying releasing her new album and is supposed to release a holiday album sometime before Christmas. She always announced over-ambitiously; I’ll be surprised if we actually get a holiday album from her this year

Damn, I know the streaming numbers for the album have been subpar in comparison to TUN, but I didn't think the sales would be trending down.

Ariana doing around 200K is fine. This album doesn't have anywhere near as much hype as her last album, hell it doesn't even have a hit as big as No Tears from Sweetener. Not to mention the rollout of this album is totally different from her previous efforts. Also it's 2020 we are in a pandemic and it was the U.S election this week. There is a lot to take into account when looking at these numbers.

I must be ignorant to the election because I don't see how that would affect Ariana Grande's 1st week sales of her latest album?? I've personally paid attention to the election but that didn't stop me from checking out "Positions"..

The pandemic is not an excuse either, when streaming and radio numbers are estimated to be on a normal level now. (See also: folklore and Chromatica opening above 270k). There was less hype and the material isn't connecting in the same way this time (look at the drops on Spotify).

I've personally paid attention to the election but that didn't stop me from checking out "Positions".. I’m not sure there’s any way for us to know it if it really makes a big difference, but for big stars like Ariana there’s usually a big buzz around a new release. However the election is such big news that it takes away some of that buzz. People’s attention is on the future of democracy as opposed to a new Ari album. I don’t know if it really matters much, but it certainly doesn’t help.

I've personally paid attention to the election but that didn't stop me from checking out "Positions".. The election has monopolized all headlines for the week, so casual listeners who would probably otherwise have given Ariana some spins might not even know she has an album out, or if they did quickly forgot about it. And since election results are likely going to dominate for the next several weeks, she'll only get further buried, because she's not doing any press of her own. Maybe she has some things planned for the rest of the year or this is an attempt at longevity by not gunning so hard for a high debut, but right now it seems that she's relying solely on the radio singles and her core fanbase to carry this.

^As with most acts prior to the rule change, album redemptions and merch bundles were part of it.

Hits daily double now has Positions doing 160k, which is 35k less than the mid-week projection and 90k less than the original projection. Ouch.

Those aren't the final numbers...I don't understand the point in them releasing that chart if they're just going to post the complete finalized chart in a few hours:

These aren't final numbers, but I doubt the final numbers would be that much different from these figures. This is an "early look" before they post the final numbers, but they should have just posted the final figures imo.

Wow, this is almost 100k down from their initial projection. I'll wait and see if there is some longevity but troublesome first week numbers for Miss Grande.

Even if it is annoying. They used to release the final chart around the time they are posting these "early looks". Now they are "milking" some clicks for an hour/two before they post the final one. Can't blame them.

What’s the big obsession with high first week sales if the album is going to end up selling less than the previous one anyway? It’s not where an album debuts but where it ends up. We already know Positions isn’t going to outsell TUN in the long run. So If the album sold gold first week and still went on to sell less than TUN it would be deemed a flop by your standards.

Did Positions have physical-album availability? Yup, there's 3 versions of the album on her store and on Target's website / in their stores if I recall correctly. EDIT: I saw somebody unbox a Target CD version on YouTube the day of release with the red sticker so that's really my only source of it.
