ROUND TWELVE - RESULTS
Welcome to the twelfth elimination ceremony! This is the deciding moment, the last round for us to choose which three of you are worthy to be getting to the final round. Joining us for this round of judging is Harry🌊, Fire, Ginger Spice, and Samosaurus!
The winner of this round, and the first member of the final three, is...MOD!Kate Bush - "Wuthering Heights"You pretty easily snatched the first seat on the final round with this gorgeous song! This is your fifth win of the season and there's still one more round left to prove if you really have what it takes. Congratulations you're still in the running!Sambalada: "This is a beautiful song. Simple and effective. The instrumental is so f**king gorgeous, and the way it switches between tempo so smoothly is great. The melody is also pretty strong. Kate's vocal performance is outstanding. I know her voice might need time to grow on some people but she's really utilizing her vocals as a tool to portray the emotions of the characters in this song perfectly." (8.9)Fearless: "OMG lOoK iT’S cURsiVe sinGiNG! I think this has beautiful instrumentation and basing a song on a novel and pulling it off well isn’t that easy to do, methinks. Kate Bush’s high notes are beautifully sung too." (9.3)Matt: -Violet: (9.4)Willapted: "If I were participating, sending in a song by Kate for this round would’ve been hard to pass up on. She has so many incredible songs that fit the art pop genre, like this one for example. For this to be her debut single, that she wrote at age 18, is truly hard to comprehend. One of the greatest songs of all time, without a shadow of a doubt." (9.8)James: "Okay, don’t hate me here. I really like the music to this, but I am not a fan of the Minnie Mouse sounding vocals here. It really kept me from enjoying this more than I wanted to." (6.2)Harry🌊: "I love Kate Bush and this is easily one of her best songs. It’s such a classic. Out of the four songs chosen this round, this one suits the theme the most for me. Her vocals are incredible, as always, and I love how the lyrics are inspired by the novel of the same name. The instrumentation is also beautiful. Overall an amazing song." (9.5)Fire: (9.0)Ginger Spice: "I've been getting into Kate Bush lately, so I'm quite biased to this one!" (9.5)Samosaurus: “It might be a pretty obvious choice for this theme, but it's also one of the absolute best. The production sounds magical, and Kate's rarely sounded better. Basically everything about this song is perfect, and I especially like how the instrumental changes for different parts of the song but still flows perfectly." (9.9)TOTAL: 81.5 | AVERAGE: 9.06The second member of the final three, and last person to escape the bottom two is...WALT91!Talk Talk - "It's My Life"Your song also comfortably put you through to the final round. You are now the only contestant who has made it to the final round, twice. Just one more small step and you might become a two-times finalist and possibly a winner too! Congratulations you're still in the running!Sambalada: "The bassline though. So iconic that lesser-known acts have been trying to replicate it for the longest time. The songwriting is super strong, that chorus is just insanely catchy and memorable, coupled with the awesome instrumentations. It's also Talk Talk's catchiest song which explains how it's my favourite song by them. It's definitely greatest of all time tier." (9.5)Fearless: "Nice production. Bop. Bop." (8.8)Matt: -Violet: (9.8)Willapted: "This song I’ve only gotten into more recently, and yeah it’s really quite the tune. The instrumental on this absolutely slaps for one. Hollis’ vocal performance on here is also a highlight, that chorus is massive." (9.2)James: "I’ve always been a huge fan of Talk Talk from what I’ve heard from them despite not going into a dive into their discography. There’s a lot of newer bands I love that are heavily inspired by them, so I know I’d love them if I dug deeper. I’ve always been a big fan of this one." (9.1)Harry🌊: "I love the instrumentation on this song, though I’m not as keen on the vocals. The verses aren’t too interesting to me but as soon as the chorus kicks in, it gets really great. I also love the development as the song goes on, how different sounds keep being added into the production each chorus. This is a really cool song and I’m glad to see it here." (8.0)Fire: (7.6)Ginger Spice: "I'm mainly used to the No Doubt version, but I appreciate the original. It's a great song either way!" (8.5)Samosaurus: “Talk Talk are a band I really want to like more than I do, but this song is an exception, because this is pretty great. I really like the synths in the chorus, and the vocals are something that I should probably find more annoying than I actually do." (8.4)TOTAL: 78.9 | AVERAGE: 8.77
Which means the bottom two are... HAMED & NICK PERKINS
Hamed, you're no stranger to this position. Some might say you're becoming too comfortable in staying in the bottom. However, you do have your standout moments that show us that you have the drive and ambition to win. But is it enough to catch up with the other contestants at this point? Nick Perkins, as a recap, in the last four rounds, you've had two wins and two bottom twos. This just shows how ridiculous this competition has been that one week you can be on top, and the next you can be in real danger of elimination. And in a round this strong, is your song strong enough to secure you a spot in the final round?
One of you will be eliminated.

The last person to advance to the next round, and the last member of the final three, is...NICK PERKINS!David Bowie - "Life On Mars?"Sambalada: "There's a reason why this is one of Bowie's most iconic songs. The songwriting is very cool and it has a strong hook to accompany it." (8.6)Fearless: "I think the songwriting is brilliant here, where the girl in the song goes to see a movie to escape reality only to find that the “escape” was only another reflection of reality. The swelling chorus is a highlight here too. It’s one of my favorite David Bowie songs." (9.2)Matt: -Violet: (8.5)Willapted: "Up until about midway through last year, I’d be giving this a significantly lower score. Eventually though, it just kind of clicked with me and I’ve loved it ever since. Not one of my absolute favourites from Bowie but it’s got its reputation as a classic for a reason. His performance on here is brilliant and the instrumental is really good." (9.5)James: "“Life on Mars?” is definitely one from Bowie I’ve under appreciated in the past. I wouldn’t rank it as among my favorites from him, but this is still very very good." (8.7)Harry🌊: "This song is pretty amazing, even if it’s not something I would usually find myself seeking out to listen to. I love Bowie’s unique voice and singing style in this. The lyrics are also really interesting and not your usual pop lyrics. The production compliments the vibe the song was going for." (8.7)Fire: (7.7)Ginger Spice: (7.0)Samosaurus: "It took a few listens for this to really click with me, but it's great, maybe my favourite song I've heard from Bowie. I really enjoy his vocal performance here in particular." (9.0)TOTAL: 76.9 | AVERAGE: 8.54 You made it! After falling short in Season 1, this time you make it to the final round! (that rhymes!) Congratulations you're still in the running!Which means...
HAMED, I'm sorry but you've been eliminated.
Janelle Monáe - "Many Moons"
Sambalada: "One of the most unique and innovative artist in this century. I hadn't heard this project in full but if this song is any indication, she's really cementing her presence and style in music in the best way. She knows what kind of artist she'd like to be known as. Great instrumentations choice and Janelle herself sounds good." (8.0) Fearless: "The song’s concept is pretty cool, with it being the final song in a series of songs that tell a story about a future dystopia. The production is nice too and I especially like the drums that provide a constant level of energy in the song." (8.1) Matt: - Violet: (7.6) Willapted: "Janelle is an artist who often times I don’t quite get the appeal. Her music is well performed and everything, and occasionally there is a song of hers I’ll really like, but generally I’m not a huge fan. This isn’t really an exception, it’s a solid enough track but I don’t get a whole lot out of it. The beat is my favourite part, it’s catchy and has some cool moments, but ultimately the rest of the song falls a bit short for me. It also doesn’t really help that the song is 5 and a half minutes and she’s not really singing on half of it." (7.3) James: "I’ve never been big on Janelle, and I’ve always found her to be insanely overrated. However, this is better than what I’ve heard from her. For me, she either comes off as obnoxious or super mid. This was fun." (7.4) Harry🌊: "Production wise, this is definitely the most interesting of the bunch. Janelle sounds great here. I love the many uses of background vocals throughout and how she manipulates her voice many times throughout the song. Nearly every line feels completely different to the one before. The almost spoken word bridge works so well here. Additionally, the lyrics are amazing. This song feels like a whole event!" (9.0) Fire: (8.2) Ginger Spice: (8.0) Samosaurus: "I was excited for this because I haven't heard much of Janelle's earlier work, and while this was good, next to the other songs in this group it's kind of underwhelming. There isn't anything wrong with it, there just also isn't much that'll make me want to return after this." (7.8) TOTAL: 71.4 | AVERAGE: 7.93
Despite not having won a single round throughout the season, your presence in the room has made yourself a very memorable part of this competition. You are the true underdog of the season, and you play the game well. Taking risks here and there. It's just unfortunate that this song can't bring you the final round. But you should be proud for making it this far, thank you for participating! :'(

FINAL ROUND - RESULTS
Welcome to the thirteenth and final elimination ceremony! Three of you are standing before me but only two will be announced as this season's grand finalists. Joining us for the final round of judging is Cynthia, Born, Kimberly, Wave and frenchfry!
Without further ado, our first finalist is...MOD!Lorde - "Perfect Places"You did it again! This time with the top-scoring song of the season, what a way to end your journey! You received four perfect 10s which might be the record now. Speaking about records, you're now tied with Matt from Season 2 as contestants with the most wins in a single season! Congratulations, you're a finalist!Sambalada: "For the longest time, this is my top favourite Lorde song. The atmosphere is dreamy and gives a sense of hopefulness. Lorde's pretty voice and the instrumentations are perfect fit for each other." (9.8)Fearless: "My favorite song on Melodrama and I believe it’s one of Lorde’s absolute best. Lyrically it’s reminiscent of “Ribs” from her first album which is another standout in her discography and I really enjoy it since even if you don’t do drugs or party, the insecurity you have when you’re young is something a lot of people can relate to, and Lorde captures it so well. Musically, I love love love the chorus. It just soars and swells. I also love the “what the fuck are perfect places anyway?” line too because it’s too real, lol." (10)Matt: -Violet: (10)Willapted: "Well this is actually my favourite outro on any album, so shoutout to whoever sent this. The euphoric feeling this gives off is hard to describe, it sounds so… perfect, for lack of a better word." (10)Cynthia: "I also think this is a great song (which is kind of odd/unexpected because I'm not like this HUGE Lorde fan or anything...I don't even think I listened to this whole album? so I don't know how or why I know this track tbh). But anyway, it has the same issue that IIWII has with the not-very-optimistic theme, but from a different angle. "Good news: this isn't a weak chart week. Bad news: everything at the top is s**t that I hate. My favorite pop girls are on a break or flopping. Why does the general public hate vaginas so much? I hate this place. Get me out of here. Or at least stream a Dua Lipa song, damn"" 5/5 song + 3 theme = (8.0)Born: "Everyone and their mom is a Lorde stan at this point but I guess I'm glad whoever sent this got me as a guest judge :kii: I love closers that seem to summarize the entire album and end the story with a feeling of closure and hope. And this song does that, while staying true to the bittersweet nature of the album. Now, I know I have made "Green Light" my personal album closer cause I love the kind of energy it leaves me with but "Perfect Places" is an essential part of the modern pop music landscape. Who ends an album with a monster lyric like "what the f**k are perfect places anyway"? Everyone say "thank you Lord(e)"💖" (9.5)Kimberly: "I fell in love with this song when the album came out, then fell out of love because I found it too preachy. But navigating life, friendships, drugs and other life experiences has made me ask the same questions Lorde asks on this victorious tune. So I found myself coming back to it a lot in the back half of the tumultuous year that was 2020. I don't know what the f**k perfect places are, but I know this is a perfect closer to Melodrama." (10)Wave: "One of my favorites from Lorde." (9.5)Frenchfry: (9.7)TOTAL: 86.5 | AVERAGE: 9.61Which means the bottom two are... NICK PERKINS & WALT91
Nick Perkins, as the only contestant remaining who had participated in all three seasons as a player, you have a lot of experience. Will that loads of experience be able to take you into the grand finale this time? Walt91, as the first winner of this competition, you have more than proved to us that you deserve the title. But are you good enough now to make the season finale twice?
Only one of you will be joining MoD in the grand finale.

And the second finalist is...NICK PERKINS!The Strokes - "Ode To The Mets"Sambalada: "I wasn't as huge of a fan on this album than some of you, but out of the songs I've heard, this one is one of the most instant for me. The instrumentation is simply haunting, and so is the vocal performance. It also has a pretty strong songwriting." (7.7)Fearless: "I usually tend to gravitate towards songs that have a strong chorus - this doesn’t particularly have one but the repeated instrumental riff does get stuck in your head so that does the job. This is right in the middle when it comes to favorites from The New Abnormal but the entire album is really strong so naturally this gets a high score from me." (8.7)Matt: -Violet: (8.0)Willapted: "I went into a bit more detail on this in my 2020 countdown but yeah, it’s one of the best tracks of last year, and almost the best outro. It’s still growing on me too. I love basically everything about this, but the most impressive thing is the way every line is so gripping and well delivered. What a tune." (9.6)Cynthia: "“Admittedly not super familiar with much of the Strokes' music, but I don't dislike this song at all. So, I'm reading the song lyrics and annotations on Genius rn (yeah, I'm that person /nerd) and this is...an absolutely fascinating choice. I don't even know if it was intentional or if the person just picked it bc he likes this song and said f**k playing to win, but I'm intrigued. It's like Perfect Places' dystopian vibe on steroids, but at the same time rather opposite of that. An ode to a team that continues to let you down but instead of begging to be let out of this hellscape you just keep on rooting for the impossible. This is a Demi Lovato fan waiting for her to deliver a #1. Or a rock fan determined to hold on to hope that one day his own fave will be able to overcome Pulse's hard-on for pop girls in something outside of March/Wintertime Madness. "I hate this place, but I can't bring myself to leave. It has to happen for me one day, right? RIGHT?" -- Maybe the Mets can win this time. Hope springs eternal." 4/5 song + 5/5 theme = (9.0)Born: "I was kinda tempted to steal gates' review of this song from the WTM thread but I'm not at a point in my life where I'm willing to be named "Shruggie 2.0" Back to the song. I don't think there's a lot I can say to do it justice. "Ode To The Mets" is definitely one of my favorite songs from 2020. From the metaphors & references in the song's lyrics to the melodies and the production, it almost feels like The Strokes has been building up to making this song for about two decades now. "Ode To The Mets" is not just an album closer, it's a look-back on an incredible journey.🤍" (9.4)Kimberly: "Now look, I am known to enjoy a tasteful New York love letter. I really liked the instrumentation here, especially when I listened to the songs one last time on my headphones before I sent in my scores. It is brilliant that it ties in with the instrumentation on the album opener. The lyrics, while poetically penned, did not live up to the premise well enough for me, and some of the rhymes felt forced. I'm just being overcritical here though, I definitely think this is a phenomenal pick." (7.9)Wave: "I've always liked The Strokes." (9.5)Frenchfry: (8.6)TOTAL: 78.4 | AVERAGE: 8.71 !Which means...
WALT91,I'm sorry but you've been eliminated.Kacey Musgraves - "It Is What It Is"Sambalada: "One of the standout from kacey's great debut album. Her voice is beautiful and the lyrics she sang is relatable. Add the memorable hook and melody to it makes it one of my fave from Kacey. And that's saying a lot coming from me." (9.3)Fearless: "I know Golden Hour has a strong fan base around here but Same Trailer Different Park is still my favorite Kacey album. This is probably one of the weaker tracks from the album, but I still enjoy its simplicity of it all. The song makes a really great closer for that album too. “Rainbow” would’ve been the better Kacey closer to send though." (8.3)Matt: -Violet: (6.3)Willapted: "I’m not too familiar with Kacey’s music overall, I’ve heard quite a few songs from Pulse games over the years, but I’ve never really sat down and listened to one of her albums. I will say that this is one of the better songs I’ve heard from her. It’s got a very pleasant sound to it, the chorus is nice and the lyrics are simple but they work well." (7.7)Cynthia: "So the song itself is flawless. This is legit one of my top 5 Kacey songs, period. Thematically, hmm. It's not a really victorious anthem we've got going on here. It's more "well, I might be the song for you, or I might just be what you settle on until you hear something you genuinely like, idk, the charts are kinda weak rn."" 5/5 song + 3/5 theme = (8.0)Born: "What I love most about folk & country music is that the vocals are pretty much always in the forefront and the mix highlights the lyrics & the performer's emotions. I really didn't doubt Kacey for a second. I love the way she writes and this is a really good closing track. Simplicity is key.💙" (8.4)Kimberly: "Kacey, Kacey, Kacey... This song is one of the best strictly-country songs I've heard. It is simple, but effective in its storytelling, and ties in with a lot of the themes Kacey discusses in her debut album. She beautifully manages to elicit that insecurity and fear of abandonment you get when you truly love someone, but know that it won't last. The bridge really hit me the hardest, a moment of reality check and awakening. My one problem with it was the length of the break in the song, though I do get what it's trying to do. Nice work, whoever sent it." (8.6)Wave: "I love Kacey, it's just a lil slow for me, but I enjoyed it overall!" (9.5)Frenchfry: (8.8)TOTAL: 74.9 | AVERAGE: 8.32
You might have slowed down a bit towards the end after a strong start but it doesn't mean you aren't a strong competitor. It's just that your great submissions were outshined by everyone else, including this one. I'm sorry your run was cut right before the finale but thank you for participating! :'(
