I can't really be disappointed here. My #2 winning would be great, but I feel like my #10 represents this year in modern rock better.

i was the last person to have ALL of my Top 10s, but the first too lose ALL of my Top 10s ... that 16 to 3 stretch was brutal

So they make the top 25 six times without making the top 10, and then the first time they do, they win

just like Rush & Kate Bush before...The Smiths repeatedly fail to crack the top ten until they finally push all the way to the very top

This was another minefield of a list to rank, and we all generally seemed to share this sentiment. And plenty of you came out - whether to send lists or even just offer commentary on the sides - and I thank you all for making this rankdown another resounding success. The 2020 Alt rankdown is up next, but once that finishes up (i.e. after the new year) we'll be heading back to 1983 Alt. And if you thought this list was stacked, boy do I have news for you... Great results for this top 10, and a well deserved victory for The Smiths. I know I said earlier they were hit-and-miss for me, but they definitely delivered with this one.
It's not over yet for #2 either. Hopefully mainstream can drive The Cars home tonight tomorrow or Tuesday.

"Drive" is one of my favorite songs of the 1980s, but "How Soon Is Now?" is awesome too. See? I had BOTH in my top 10, so I have GOOD taste in music! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)

10. Blasphemous Rumours - Depeche ModeI started to get more into this one in the 90's, but I was always a fan of "People Are people" and "Master and Servant"9. Eyes Without a Face - Billy IdolBilly Idol doing a new wave ballad and it became his biggest hit. I love this song. especially because Billy found a way to add in the punk flavor guitars. easy top 10 on my list. Too bad we didn't get to rank "Rebel Yell" here, but I hope you all did it right on mainstream. 8. P ride (In the Name of Love) - U2U2 is a band I'll treat the same way on Mainstream as I do on Modern Rock. They have a few songs I consider even better in 1982-83. 7. Here Comes the Rain Again - EurythmicsFor me this song falls on the same level as "Would I Lie To You". It's vocally commanding and they really captured the feel of rain in the way the synths are played , and this is the correct format for it to prevail. 6. The Killing Moon - Echo & The BunnymenI remember liking this better some years back, but I always thought it could have benefitted with a bit more melody. It would probably sound better to me on a Darkwave mix tape. 5. When Doves Cry - Prince and the RevolutionThis is a great song. The production value and instrument arrangements are fantastic, but I do not get the appeal for Prince on Rock Format. Even my favorite "Little Red Corvette" would run out of gas riding up my Rock lists. 80's Prince for me was ruler on POP. Better than the whole Jackson clan, but just one notch below George Michael. Speaking of Little Red Corvettes...Go Cars.4. The Ghost in You - The Psychedelic FursOne of those aesthetic wonderjams of the 80's. Richard Butler sets the mode to heavenly musical vibes on this song. Also none of the best fade outs of the 80's 3. It's My Life - Talk TalkThis one just misses my top 10. The song rides a wonderful bass guitar. I also want to point out the Wild kingdom music video. The effix on the song are actual animal sounds. Now that's the kind of experimenting I can go for. It's my all time favorite song from the band, but I first charted Talk Talk with their own theme song of the same name. Hopefully we get to rank that one? 2. Drive - The CarsAmazing song. Even its title is pure Cars themed. , but not my favorite Cars song. I have sooo many. Most of them sung by Ric. My all time favorite is sung by Benjamin tho. I do think he was the correct lead for this ballad. Ric might have quirked a bit too much, but Ben really captured the melancholic flavor of the lyrics. 1. How Soon Is Now? - The SmithsAlso not my favorite Smiths song , but it is awesome. I didn't know of this song or much of the Smiths until the 90's, but the way the guitars are played on this song is a style I immediately get hooked on if I hear it in any other Alternative Rock song. Including todays music. The reverb or whatever they use sounds like more guitars, and you can never have too many electric guitars in one song. peacebone Good job hosting. This song had a lot of 80's classics I remember., but also too many were left out. I hope this Modern Rock lists pull the stick out of their ass and start giving Duran Duran the attention they deserve. Also thanks for the Industry "State of The Nation". Been searching that one for years.

Talk Talk had so many great songs, too bad that No Doubt had to re-record this classic. I like both versions, honestly.

Too bad we didn't get to rank "Rebel Yell" here, but I hope you all did it right on mainstream. it shows up on the 1983 list I hope this Modern Rock lists pull the stick out of their ass and start giving Duran Duran the attention they deserve. starting with 1983, we will be seeing quite a bit of Duran Duran on the Modern Rock lists

This sure was a fantastic year for modern rock! If it couldn't be "It's My Life" then I'm glad that "How Soon Is Now?" was able to take the victory. Both songs are among the best the 1980s has to offer. I'm also really happy that one of my favorite discoveries from this rankdown, "Blasphemous Rumors", was able to earn a spot in this stellar top 10. Great job once again and thanks for hosting peacebone!

10. Blasphemous Rumours - Depeche Mode: It's a little slow out the gate, but once it gets going, it's Depeche Mode at their most morbid best. The clanking industrial sounds juxtaposed against the melodic chorus creates an atmosphere that is lovely as it is oppressive.
9. Eyes Without a Face - Billy Idol: Given the crossover nature of Billy Idol's music, I wasn't sure where this one would end up, but I'm fine with it making top 10. While Billy Idol isn't really a name that comes to mind when I think "subtle," the abnormally intimate performance he delivers for this ballad works perfectly, and Perri Lister's wispy backing vocals provide a great contrast against the darker sound of Idol's vocals and the minimalist backing music.
8. Pride (In the Name of Love) - U2: The Edge's guitar work is at its '80 peak on this track and Bono's messaging and vocals feel powerful rather than preachy. It's a great sample of the majestic alternative rock the band could craft in their prime.
7. Here Comes the Rain Again - Eurythmics: One of the all-time great synth-pop tracks; those lush arrangements and tight production make this one feel like the '80's answer to baroque pop, and of course Annie Lennox sounds powerful as usual.
6. The Killing Moon - Echo & The Bunnymen: Ian McCulloch weaving entrancing impressionist yarns in an ethereal dreamscape on what is probably the band's greatest track. Apparently McCulloch himself once said: "When I sing 'The Killing Moon' I know there isn't a band in the world who's got a song anywhere near that." Sounds a little boastful, but he had a reason to brag with this one.
5. When Doves Cry - Prince and the Revolution: The extended section of just percussion in the first verse helps put the focus on Prince's vocals and the synth hooks in the chorus, and it allows the track to gradually pile on layers as it goes from a minimalist ballad to a lush pop track in a brilliantly crafted crescendo. It's not hard to see why this was a hit across multiple formats.
4. The Ghost in You - The Psychedelic Furs: Not my favorite song by them this year, but this band didn't have a bad track in this rankdown. Lovely ambience on this track, and another great vocal performance.
3. It's My Life - Talk Talk: A track like none other - there's just something magical about the synth soundscaping on this song, and Mark Hollis' slightly unconventional timbre suits it perfectly.
2. Drive - The Cars: One of the greatest rock ballads of this decade. The songwriting is some of the simplest in this top 10, but the Benjamin Orr vocals and synths here didn't need much complexity to pack a ton of heartfelt melancholy.
1. How Soon Is Now? - The Smiths: The direct lyrics and dark oppressive instrumentation combine to express the pain of isolation in a way that is melodramatic yet completely heartfelt. It's as if the band went so deep into ironic melancholy that they lapsed back into sincerity. There may have been songs I liked better here, but I don't think any of them captured the "essence" of modern rock quite like this one.

Beautifully stated reviews of two of the best songs of 1984. Was thrilled to see The Smiths deservedly win for what is one of the most classic modern rock songs out there. Three final thoughts... 1. It seems sacrilegious NOT to have ranked Alphaville's Forever Young in this countdown (their video on YouTube has 345 Million views) and to a (somewhat) lesser degree not ranking Nik Kershaw's Wouldn't It Be Good is also unheard of - at least in my book. Shows how incredibly strong 1984 was for modern rock. 2. Excellent Birds at 81, Sexcrime at 80, and Master and Servant at 49?!??! All of these alternative classics are woefully under-ranked. 3. Thanks peacebone ! Can't wait to see the 1983 lists which may be even more challenging, if that is even possible.
