It's only April and I have quit a few candidates for my favourite hit of the year. I don't know about yall but I think this year is pretty great so far in terms of popular music

Absolutely! 2021 has been a fantastic year for hit songs so far - and a very consistent one as well. Hope it can keep up!

2021 feels like another 2013 or 1999 - still a pretty good year for the charts, but paling in comparison to the one that came immediately before it.

It was a great year, but the 2004 YE was arguably the best ever. Personally, I'd consider 2005 to be a significant downgrade from 2004. This is especially true when you look at the hip-hop and R&B that made the YE, with some truly disgusting songs and trends dominating those genres that year (not everything, but a good chunk of it). Pop and country were also going through a rough period, as barely any songs in either genre made the YE. Rock did have an above-average year thanks to the dominance of Kelly Clarkson and Green Day and a few iconic songs breaking through, but IMO it wasn't enough to save the year.

Even with this, I would say 2006 was significantly worse than 2005, while there were some great hits this year there were also some terrible hits as well.

The only thing that’s gonna bum about this year is that Midnight Sky, Prisoner, 7 Summers, Golden, My Head & My Heart and Hawai won’t be making the year end.

Damage is the one that stings the most for me because if it had been released 2 weeks later (the first week of the 2021 Billboard year), it would absolutely have a shot at the YE. Instead, it’s a prime candidate to be the unofficial #101.

So I decided to do some number-crunching with TOTC's predictions to see what the 2021 YE so far would look like if the tracking year started on the week of January 2, 2021, instead of November 21, 2020 like Billboard is using. I did this by subtracting the appropriate number of points from each song that's locked for the YE (or in contention to do so) that charted anytime between 11/21/2020 and 12/26/2020.
Here's what the YE top 10 currently looks like under this scenario:
1. drivers license (+1 vs. TOTC) 2. Mood (-1) 3. Blinding Lights (=) 4. 34+35 (+2) 5. Go Crazy (=) 6. Levitating (+1) 7. positions (-3) 8. Save Your Tears (+8) 9. What You Know Bout Love (+2) 10. Therefore I Am (-2)
Assuming the top 30 songs so far have surpassed the YE cutoff (16/52 weeks = 30 songs; song #30 is currently Streets with 1532 points): - Dynamite, I Hope, and Bang! are barely locked for the YE. - Laugh Now Cry Later, Lemonade, and Kings & Queens would not have enough points to make the YE, despite all making the 2020 January-December YE. - Lonely, Good Time, and Throat Baby would see their runs get caught between years. (If Put Your Records On drops out this coming week, it will also join this club.)

Real talk, I'm not complaining about any of the above songs (including PYRO) potentially missing the J-D YE. Realizing that Lonely is in that category did kinda surprise me, though, I thought it would have enough points to scrape by the current cutoff, but it looks like it lost too many weeks to 2020.

I'm honestly surprised Without You isn't a smash hit in America yet That’s because radio like with other worldwide hits didn’t pick it up when it was doing great in streaming.

Well in the past two weeks I've officially set up my retirement (from real work, not this) and bought a new house in a smaller community that I'll be moving into when it's built next April. (So expect to see slowdowns from me.) I missed last week's Year End Predictions, so here's a two-week update for the chart week dated April 17, 2021. The "LW" figures are actually from two weeks ago, as are the previous points.)

So a Save Your Tears remix with Ariana Grande is coming. Will it be enough to get it to Numero Uno?

So I decided to do some number-crunching with TOTC's predictions to see what the 2021 YE so far would look like if the tracking year started on the week of January 2, 2021, instead of November 21, 2020 like Billboard is using. I did this by subtracting the appropriate number of points from each song that's locked for the YE (or in contention to do so) that charted anytime between 11/21/2020 and 12/26/2020. Here's what the YE top 10 currently looks like under this scenario: 1. drivers license (+1 vs. TOTC) 2. Mood (-1) 3. Blinding Lights (=) 4. 34+35 (+2) 5. Go Crazy (=) 6. Levitating (+1) 7. positions (-3) 8. Save Your Tears (+8) 9. What You Know Bout Love (+2) 10. Therefore I Am (-2) Assuming the top 30 songs so far have surpassed the YE cutoff (16/52 weeks = 30 songs; song #30 is currently Streets with 1532 points): - Dynamite, I Hope, and Bang! are barely locked for the YE. - Laugh Now Cry Later, Lemonade, and Kings & Queens would not have enough points to make the YE, despite all making the 2020 January-December YE. - Lonely, Good Time, and Throat Baby would see their runs get caught between years. (If Put Your Records On drops out this coming week, it will also join this club.) That moment when "Blinding Lights" is still #3.

Artists who i never thought would get a #1 in 2021 (so far)
- Olivia Rodrigo (who knew HSM:TM:TS had so many fans behind it, and her as the title character in that show helps as well. There’s also that... other show with a certain co star which i don’t wanna thank because he probably gave attention to the show, which also gave olivia attention, so we’ll go with HSM as her breakout i guess 😂)
- Daniel Caeser/Giveon (I mean, come on, out of all the new artist #1s we got so far, these 2 were definitely a long shot to even think about. They’re sadly on the same level as Miguel, Jhene Aiko, H.E.R, Kehlani, and so many other amazing and talented R&B artists that deserve this top spot, so i’m so glad they did manage to come through, even if they needed JB’s help).
- Lil Nas X (well i mean some people technically doubted him and for a second forgot he’s the OTR guy. For me, i was both certain and unsure if he would get another #1, so i’m glad he did get it after all).
-Anderson .Paak (What more do i even gotta say. This has been a long time coming, and it’s finally going to be a year where Anderson shines. Thanking Bruno x10000 for this. LTDO is the best #1 so far this year and there’s no denying it).
- Polo G (After “Pop Out” with Lil Tjay, (another artist who i wouldn’t think would ever reach the top 10, let alone top 3 as a lead artist), Polo G was charting hits in the low 30s-40s for a while. So to see him all of a sudden get a #1 is a real surprise, but he is one of the better new rappers in 2021, so he deserves it 100% as well).

am I the only one who wasn't surprised Polo G got a #1? he reminds me of Roddy Ricch, he's been having a couple of minor hits for a while now and it's just been building up for his big breakthrough

Looks like the cutoff is starting to strengthen a bit now that we have some more competition coming in. I wouldn't be surprised if it winds up being strong enough to knock songs like Throat Baby, Put Your Records On, or even RATCT out of contention. We'll have to see down the line, but it's very possible.
And sadly, this will only make Damage's chances to make the YE even worse than they already are :(

I’m calling it now, Rapstar might make the top 5 YE. It feels like a ROCKSTAR/Humble type hit to me, which is kind of a coincidence since its an artist who you never would’ve thought would get a really big mainstream hit, and then reality hits you.

If it finishes at #5, it would be the third time in 4 years where the song that finishes there is a hip-hop song that starts with R and ends with “star.”
