Beyond Radio Tim’s Top 150, November 29, 2020
LW/TW/ARTIST/SONG/PEAK/WEEKS
1 1 ROGER MANNING JR. The Quickening 1(3) 12
After discovering the band the Lickerish Quartet earlier this year and writing about their former band Jellyfish when working on the 1990 blog and delved into more music from the interim and came across this gem from 2008. Fun, atmospheric pop with shades of the Raspberries, ELO, Styx and the Bay City Rollers.
8 2 THIRD DAY Sky Falls Down 2 12
Over the last year the percentage of old music on my current chart has increased, due to the podcast and blog posts. When I was writing about 2000 in October I re-discovered 2 songs from Third Day that both peaked at #101 on my chart in 2000. Both are in my top 15 right now (“What Good” at #14) and this one is assured the top spot in the next week or two.
2 3 CALLUM BEATTIE Salamander Street 2 15
This Scottish singer-songwriter wrote this song about an old classmate who took up prostitution, of which this street in Edinburgh is known for. This sweeping ballad hit #6 on the Scottish Singles chart this past summer.
4 4 SHRED KELLY Underground 4 14
This is the second top 20 for the Canadian Alt-Folk band this year, following “Dead Leaves” which peaked at #19. This one has a nice urgency, more rock than folk. Both songs are from their fifth album since 2010, “Like A Rising Sun”.
6 5 ELECTRIC ENEMY Do What You Want 5 13
This new London quartet have 4 singles out on Spotify. “Hollow Eyes” sits at #52 this week and “Heartache Melody” is lurking below my top 200 right now. I’m just putting the latest, “Take Me Up” on my December new music playlist. This one adds a bit of a groove to the Alt-rocker.
3 6 ROYAL REPUBLIC Superlove 1 11
These Swedish glammers recently hit #1 with this Superfun ditty with Partridge Family ba ba ba’s. Like Electric Enemy I just added their latest single “Magic” to my new music playlist. In 2016 they reached #15 on the Active Rock chart with “Baby”.
7 7 SCOTT STAPP Face Of The Sun 7 15
The ex-Creed lead singer has not had much impact on me as a solo artist. This heavy rocker changed that. His latest album has brought 3 songs to the Active Rock chart in the last year. There has been recent buzz that a Creed reunion is possible.
14 8 KYLIE MINOGUE Say Something 8 16
It took a time for this song to kick in for me. It nearly topped out at #102 in September before resurging in mid-October. “Magic” is on the chart at #22 with 3 other songs from “Disco” on the horizon. Most likely “Dance Floor Darling” will enter my top 150 next week.
5 9 THE VAMPS Married In Vegas 1(2) 15
Last year the Brit boy band reached #3 with “Just My Type”. Their 2014 UK hit “Wild Heart” was a minor player on my chart back then. I just listened to the follow-up “Last Night” and that has some potential.
9 10 SEMISONIC All It Would Take 9 13
It’s a comeback year for Semisonic, with this ballad following “You’re Not Alone” into the top 10. “Basement Tapes” moves up to #36 this week and should at least make the top 20.
11 11 KEITH URBAN Out The Cage 11 10
So far, the tracks from Urban’s latest “The Speed Of Now, Part 1” are not lighting up my chart like he has in the past. Though one of my mainstay artists he has only reached my top 10 5 times since 2014.
15 12 HEARTRACER Sound Of Fear 12 9
Evoking the synth-pop of the ‘80s, the band’s name comes from the Tachycardia diagnosis of leader Chris Crosby. They have been in my top 25 twice this year, “Darling” peaked at #21 in October. They have reached my top 10 once, in 2016 with ‘Dream Girl”. Speaking of the ‘80s, their latest single is a remake of Michael Sembello’s “Maniac”.
13 13 EVANESCENCE The Game Is Over 11 15
Another comeback, before “Wasted On You” peaked at #6 in June, they hadn’t been in my top 10 since 2012 with “The Other Side”.
20 14 THIRD DAY What Good 14 5
10 15 I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME Leave Me Alone 5 15
Wow, this is the first song on the chart that is getting any radio action, currently in the Alternative top 5. They bested 2019’s #6 “Choke” by one position.
