The best thing about the Christmas bomb is that they flush out the older songs. Not always. Songs that are still strong on airplay like Watermelon Sugar, ily, and Before You Go will definitely re-enter if they drop-out in the next three weeks

kworb's Billboard Radio Songs Estimates 2020/12/08
12(+1) AJR - Bang! 62.23(+1.08) I hope everyone is preparing themselves and taking shelter for when AJR blasts into the Top 10 after the Christmas Freeze

slw- it should be three weeks this season, like last year. Dec. 19 chart (covering streaming activity through Dec. 10) Dec. 26 chart (covering streaming activity through Dec. 17) Jan. 2 chart (covering streaming activity through Dec. 24)
So, three weeks total for charts dated 2020.
rena- there was a boost in commercial singles released in 1999-2000, when Billboard changed the Hot 100 eligibility rules, but then that slowed in 2001. Around 2003 is when the Singles Sales chart really became a non-event.

Where is "Mood" gaining in impressions? AllAccess shows it losing spins at Top 40 and Rhythmic. It is charting on 6 formats, so probably the other 4.

nothing would make me happier than AJR becoming a huge hitmaking force in the 2020s. They're bad in a hilarious way that you really don't see much anymore

It's interesting that "Plastic Hearts" is 50 spots higher than "Angels Like You" on Spotify even though the latter got all that playlist support

Does anyone know what year sales stopped being 'relevant' for the Hot 100? Would have been at some point in the early 2000's, before the Digital Songs chart came along, right? Also, when did the Digital one turn practically obsolete? 2000 was the last year for notable physical single sales. For digital, I'm not sure. Let me do some research.

A song from High School Musical 2 that never got radio promotion or made a YE led the sales charts for TWENTY-EIGHT WEEKS. Wut. Also blows my mind that no song that topped the sales chart at any point between 2015 and 2017 made the YE, and the vast majority didn't even chart.

^ The shift from 2015 to 2016. The #10 song in '15 outsold the #1 in '16.
There were some strange rules for the genre charts in before digital sales were incorporated. I think Janet/Nelly shot to #1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart because of an incredibly small sales when the physical single was released.
People complain about arbitrary rules now: 'Into the Groove' is the perfect example. The logic of not including 12" singles on H100? It's not difficult to decipher when you look at which artists/labels primarily released in that format.

It was first announced to most of the nation the night of Dec 8th, 1980 by legendary sportscaster Howard Cosell during Monday Night Football. Former Beatle John Lennon had been shot numerous times outside his home at the Dakota apartment building and had died on his way to Roosevelt Hospital in NYC. The next day felt almost surreal. People everywhere were in a kind of a shock not seen since the Kennedy assassination some 17 years earlier. The radio stations (regardless of format) were playing non stop Beatle tunes around the clock. It was the major story on the evening news that night and for many, many nights afterwards. People were spontaneously showing up outside the Dakota, gathering together, and singing Lennon penned songs like "All You Need Is Love" and "Give Peace A Chance", as well as other Beatles' and Lennon songs while they cried and remembered. Nobody could quite believe it had really happened. The crowds outside the Dakota were there for days. Ringo Starr went immediately to NYC to see Yoko; Paul McCartney sent his condolences from England; not sure what George Harrison ended up doing, it's been a long time. It was 40 years ago today, that an assassin made sure that they would never play...again.

It'd be cool If Brenda's Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree hit the #1, because she'll be the oldest artist (76) to top the chart. AND THAT with a song she recorded when she was 13.

Taking into account her age when she recorded RATCT, she would kinda be both the oldest AND youngest woman ever to hit number one...with the same single! The record for youngest female artist to hit number one has been held by Little Peggy March, with "I Will Follow Him", since 1963. She turned 15 just a few weeks before it hit #1.

Between "RATCT", and "AIWFCIY" having a second go at number one in separate runs (like "The Twist"), several longstanding chart records from the 60's could be falling in the next few weeks! (Louis Armstrong is the oldest artist to hit number one, another record set in the 60's.) Brenda could also set a record for longest gap between number ones, and between first and most recent number one, two records, like that of oldest woman to hit number one, currently held by Cher.
