Fiona Apple did it first and did it better
Awards aren’t, like, ~~bad~~, but pretending that Grammy winners are inherently better than non-winners does a disservice to everyone.
Grammys: It’s great if you have them and fine if you don’t.

There are so many worthy artists and other musicians, programmers, engineers, etc. in the industry who don't get the recognition that they should be getting because of how things are. Some don't submit their work for one reason or another, most often because certain lesser more commercial artists get the recognition and wins so they just don't see the point and that is a shame.

Of the major awards, I think the Grammys are the least legit.
Tonys > Oscars > Emmys > Grammys

Of the major awards, I think the Grammys are the least legit. Tonys > Oscars > Emmys > Grammys I’d flip Oscars with Tonys... there’s great theatre happening outside of a small set of New York venues, so it’s some elitist nonsense that the US’ major theatre awards only consider Broadway

It's not like she's saying something groundbreaking. Judging art has always been inherently subjective and why many famous painters and sculptors have historically not received recognition in their own time.
But when she says "“Would a runner start a race if they knew crossing the finish line first wouldn’t necessarily win them a gold medal?”, she's trying to have it both ways. A runner doesn't necessarily finish first because they were technically the best runner (best form and technique), they finish first because they're the fastest and everybody else finishes behind them. But I imagine she would be equally as unhappy if awards were simply given based on who sells the most.

She should have kept this in her drafts. The time to question the validity of awards is when you’re actually nominated/win, not when your bitter over being left out. It’s hilarious when artists like this (looking at you Halsey) act like they are revolutionaries for being upset they got shafted. I think there’s validity in having a conversation about how awards/success impact artists self-esteem and the struggle they go through, but these long-winded incoherent rants are not the T.

I adore Ellie and like the questions she posed. Like the comments above me said, some of her points are a bit off, but I still enjoyed the article.
The main question really is about the criteria. Sometimes it’s critical acclaim that matters, sometimes it’s mainstream success, sometimes it’s industry connections, sometimes it’s all of these things, sometimes it’s none of them. It’s really unclear what qualifies a record for a GRAMMY.

Awards are not like charts, seems that Ellie is mixing chart success and awards here. The running analogy goes well with chart success but not really awards, which have always been more complex.
In pop music, where the stardom and presence have always some value, award shows are always a place to promote: an artist, a tv channel, the whole industry. That's why I like Oscars more. While the presence of an individual actor and director still matters, the show itself is not built on whether Brad Pitt wins (and appears) or not, but instead have a deeper artistic value in the awards.
