Weren't you the one who tried to hurt me with goodbye Did you think I'd crumble? Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Chantay Savage is a singer-songwriter from Chicago that was signed to RCA for three albums in the '90s. She managed to earn a top-20 R&B hit on her debut but it was her sophomore album, 1996's I Will Survive (Doin' It My Way), that brought her the most success. The lead single, a cover of Gloria Gaynor's iconic disco smash produced by house legend Steve "Silk" Hurley, climbed all the way to #5 on R&B, #24 on the Hot 100 and was certified Gold. However, none of her follow-up singles could make it past the top-60 on R&B and she quietly retired from the industry after her third album in 1999. TIL she released a new charity single with Shawnna four months ago! Well....DAMN! It wasn't even THAT bad!

They had one top-30 R&B hit and released two albums on Atlantic before disbanding in 1995. Rebranding as TQ, he inked a solo deal with Epic and released his debut, They Never Saw Me Coming, in 1998. While its lead single, Westside, was TQ's only top-10 R&B hit and Hot 100 hit (#12) in America, it was his first of five top-20 hits in the UK. He released one more album with Epic in 2000 before jumping ship to Ca$h Money where his third album, Gemini, was ultimately shelved. From there, he decided to forge a path on his own and has released ten independent projects since 2004; his most recent, Christmas in Compton, dropped just last month.

Every time I see your face It makes me want to sing And every time I think about your love It drives me crazy...CagedJuggalo The Third Tanker : 1 @antigonerising : 4 Caviar : 9 B-Boy : 9 divasummer : 10 newpower : 11 🇯🇲 lucy88 🇯🇲 : 11 Linnethia Monique : 13 Albie : 15 George : 15 Zinc. : 16 #LisaRinna : 17 Private Dancer : 20 PGriffin : 20 Exclusive : 21 Ky : 21 @mirza : 21 SHOOTER : 21Soulsista : 22 Hurricane Lee : 23 Ty : 23 Wave. : 23 Troublemaker : 24 .indulgecountry : 25 Zeebz : 25 Michigan native Jerome Woods got his start out of high school as a background singer for Vesta. His demo tape landed in the hands of some of her producers and they sent it to RCA; he was quickly offered a deal and set about recording his debut as Rome; the album was released in 1997 and this lead single shot to the top-6 on the Hot 100 and top-2 on the R&B charts. The follow-up single, Do You Like This, also cracked the top-10 on R&B (#31 on the Hot 100), but that would be his last trip to the charts. RCA was not a fan of the material Rome was turning in for his sophomore project so he asked for a release from the label and secured an independent distribution deal which helped him release three more albums on his own. His last release was an EP in 2014 entitled My Time (Again) but we may not have heard the last of him just yet.

A. Some of y'all did Rome dirty. I blasted his sole album on my little JVC CD/Cassette boombox and had a whole choregraphed dance to Crazy Love. B. I had Soulshock & Karlin fatigue and my rankings will reflect that

I did no research for this s**t prior to just now but damn! Right?! I didn't know Chico DeBarge had those problems or that Sweet Sable died!! But, speaking of Sweet Sable, y'all are smoking that sweet crack. Such a vibe, even though I was only in high school when it came out. At least, we took out that terrible version of I Will Survive. I had never heard it before and then I heard a clip of it when doing this rank down and I was offended. I HATED that Rome song too, when it was released AND the video.

I'll reveal the next 5 shortly if anyone's around! The men continue to take the hits as #20 will cause four top-10 losses (including a top-2).

Rome was SANGIN' DOWN to y'all! Hmph!
Also, I figured Chantay Savage would not be long for this rankdown world, but I always liked her cover for the very reasons others disliked it. It's a testament to the lyrics more so than the singers themselves, but I loved how Chantay's cover legitimately sounded like a song someone in the '90s would have written from scratch (in fact, I will admit that I had no idea the song was a cover at first; Chantay's version is how I discovered the original). The original is superior, but I thought it was neat how she/the producers completely flipped the track into something different and I've always been fond of it.

Following a showcase in 1993, the legendary Black record executive Louis Silas signed him to MCA via his Silas Records imprint. You was written for Jesse's self-titled 1996 debut but not released as a single; Louis felt the song was special and insisted it being included on his sophomore release, 1998's 'Bout It. Released in February 1999 as the second single, it went all the way to #10 on the Hot 100 and #2 on R&B - Jesse's only top-10 hit on both formats. He released one more album with MCA in 2001 followed by an independent album in 2003 but has not been heard from since.

Another #1 loss coming up; #18 has the 2nd-highest SD and most top-10s thus far (8 total). (There were also seven ashy hoes who put this one bottom-5).

Rechristened by DeVante as his "lil' playas", the trio got their foot in the industry door by working on Jodeci's third album (1995's The Show, the After Party, the Hotel) before detaching from Swing Mob completely. They were able to secure a deal with Def Soul (the R&B imprint of Def Jam) and released their debut, Cheers 2 U, in 1998. The title track was released as its second single in March 1998 and earned the group their only top-10 R&B hit (#10; #38 Hot 100). Sadly, they inked a deal with the devil (Barry Hankerson) and the two albums they recorded in conjunction with Wackground Records were both shelved; they returned to the studio for a new project in 2007 but were unable to release any new material before group member (and principal songwriter) - Stephen "Static" Garrett - died unexpectedly of a brain aneurysm in February 2008. The two surviving members, Smoke E. Digglera and Digital Black, both worked behind the scenes up until 2019 when they joined forces with Sisqo - first as replacement members in Dru Hill and then as a brand new trio.
