“I’d like to be remembered as someone who stuck to their guns and did it the way they thought. I tried to do my very best every time out of the chute.
And … that’s it!”
And … that’s it!”
Welcome to the second installment of what going forward will be the Country Icon Rankdown Series and will feature an abridged portion of an artists discography to highlight over the course of their career. In light of the recent passing of K.T. Oslin, I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to provide a showcase of her work encompassing a selection of material from all six of her studio albums beginning with 1987's 80's Ladies all the way to 2015's Simply.
First signed to Elektra Records in 1981, she released two singles as Kay T. Oslin including the minor hit "Clean Your Own Tables". Despite their performance on the charts, Oslin ended up finding success as a songwriter of which Gail Davies, The Judds, and Dottie West all recorded songs from. She ended up catching the attention of producer Harold Shedd who at the time was best known for his work with the country group Alabama. Switching her stage name to K.T. Oslin, Shedd helped her sign with RCA Records in 1987. Oslin, who was in her mid 40s when she finally rose to fame, did so at a time when mainstream country radio first began its now commonplace practice of excluding older artists from their playlists.
K.T.'s debut for RCA, 80's Ladies, was released in January, 1987, which saw the title track make the country Top Ten and won her a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal. The follow-up singles, "Do Ya" and "I'll Always Come Back," both hit number one and so did the album, which went on to sell over a million copies. The follow-up, 1988's This Woman, was another chart-topping platinum smash, paced by the number one, double-Grammy-winning hit "Hold Me," and the Top Five singles "This Woman" and "Hey Bobby." Her third album, 1990's Love in a Small Town, featured the song "Come Next Monday" which went on to become her fourth and final number one hit.
After deciding to take several years off from music, she issued the compilation Greatest Hits: Songs From an Aging Sex Bomb in 1993 and also began trying her hand at acting where she appeared in the films This Thing Called Love and Murder So Sweet. In 1996, she returned to singing having signed with BNA Records and released My Roots Are Showing…, which included the single "Silver Tongue and Goldplated Lies". She followed that up with her second and final album for BNA titled Live Close By, Visit Often, which she co-produced with The Mavericks' lead singer, Raul Malo. K.T. released her sixth and final studio album in 2015, Simply, which included one new song and eight re-imagined incarnations of past singles and album cuts from throughout her thirty year career. Oslin was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2018.
Please make sure to PM with your songs ranked from #1 (your favorite) down to #20 (your least favorite). With this being a relatively short rankdown I do not plan on offering any extensions, so please make sure to utilize the time provided to complete this by the date below.
