hopefully itβs more like the 1st two albums; I wasnβt wowed by Love Is Dead (although Laurenβs vocals are always stellar)

From the article she claims to have changed their sound from the first 3 albums. Iβm expecting a dark record.

I wonder how they changed their sound. This could be really good or really bad. CHVRCHES as a group are insanely talented though, if this is a genre switch they should pull it off.

I'm gonna keep it to a minimum until I hear the song, but I'm not a fan of "changed our sound..."

i still haven't had anyone explain the difference between a hot cover of something & a less-hot cover (warm cover, cool cover, cold cover)?

i still haven't had anyone explain the difference between a hot cover of something & a less-hot cover (warm cover, cool cover, cold cover)? LOL! this is strictly for those who use the word "hot" to take the place of most words in the English language used to describe something that is above average from great. I can use the word "hot" to express anything, but let's stick to its context in music. For instance: You say "That's a great cover song" This could mean it's done well. Sounds like something you would expected, and doesn't put the original to shame or shame it in any way. Now if you say "that's a hot cover" then you are saying you are being completely blown away by the new version of the song. Maybe it went form a pop to a full on hard rock cover, or maybe Rock to 80's New Wave. It's in the ear of the beholder. Either way you are 10x more than just satisfied. It's firey, It's amazing, Its a Wonderjam. ;)

but nobodyβs even heard it yet! how would we know if itβs hot as in great?...I never seem to see people talk about a cover song without using βhotβ in front of it...even for covers they donβt particularly like
Iβve also heard this used with the word βsecondβ ... now what makes one second so much more great than another?

You're missing the point. It simply means a speculation that it is a cover of another song. There is no such thing as a "cold cover" as "hot" means the song is new.

βHot (insert artist here) coverβ I think is something that used to be said on Pulse from waaaay back (like early 2000s) that went away everywhere except the Rock forum. I think back then it was sarcasm whenever a new song was announced that shared a name with an old one - so similar to the reason why itβs still used today. Iβm sure thereβs a more specific origin but itβs probably the oldest Pulse-originating phrase still being used today.
Not sure why thereβs an analysis of the word βhotβ though, since the entire phrase is meant to be sarcastic, so we can assume that what is hot is most certainly not.

ah, I appreciate good sarcasm, but with so many ways a word can be used, the actual intention becomes murky...my guess is itβs used here simply out of the βtraditionβ you reference (which is what I originally thought but donβt get the appeal of)
several words have so many meanings that they become useless w/o context (eg: love)...but the WORST offender of all time is: βjustβ
1) good, right; as in the word justice 2) as a replacement for ANY adverb (I call this the SMURF-ification of adverbs)...examples: a) simply b) only c) barely d) exactly...I could go on 3) a filler word that is completely meaningless: βIβm just so very happyβ
βjustβ seems to be the new βlikeβ ... ugh!

Lol yeah, while I actually do love the Ashley Tisdale song (sheβs such a huge guilty pleasure - pun intended), I was being sarcastic. I already knew this wasnβt gonna be a cover of it and I look forward to hearing this!

the english language is made up anyways, i don't get how the term "hot cover" could lead to this sort of conversation in any sane way

holy s**t, yeah that was a fever dream I must be thinking of something else then clearly lmao I think you were recalling the Lauren Mayberry/Marshmello fracas when Lauren disowned the CHVRCHES/Marshmello collab single "Here With Me" a while back over Marshmello working with an artist Lauren found less than desirable due to abusive offenses. I can't remember the name of said artist atm.
