---- So obviously we all know 2020 was a hellish year, but you can't say there wasn't a lot of awesome music released! I decided to celebrate some of 2020's best (in my opinion) musical achievements with a personal countdown! I found the songs on this list through a variety of methods - some are by my favorite artists, some were from Pulse games, & some were algorithmically recommended to me via Spotify. Some basic ground rules I set for this list was a) songs must have been released after December 1, 2019, and b) only one song per artist. This might be a top 25, but don't read into the order of the songs too much - it's less of a ranked countdown and more of a playlist Be sure to let me know if you want a tag!

"I'm Coming" - Tove LoAlbum: Sunshine Kitty: Paw Prints Edition
we start out tonight's mix with this sad bop from my favorite Swedish pop girl Tove Lo! It's actually a cover of a Swedish song I'd never heard before ("Jag Kommer" by Veronica Maggio, if you're curious) but Tove really took this song and made it her own. I especially love the call-backs to her previous single Habits and the dreamy atmosphere of the production - it almost reminds me of fellow Swede Robyn's iconic Dancing On My Own.

#24 "Magic" - Kylie MinogueAlbum: Discowe head from Sweden to Australia with this next entry! I've gotten really into Kylie's back catalogue over the course of 2020 (stream Love At First Sight and Get Outta My Way for clear skin) and unlike certain other legacy acts, her new material doesn't disappoint! Magic, in particular, is her strongest single in years - it's the disco dancefloor anthem we needed but didn't deserve in 2020! Such a catchy song that always makes me do a little dance in my chair

#23 "Break Up Song" - Little MixAlbum: ConfettiOne of the most prevalent trends in pop music this year was 80's synth-pop throwbacks. Of all of them, I'd say Little Mix's post-breakup anthem, the fittingly titled Break Up Song, was my favorite and also my favorite LM song! It's got a very nostalgic sound while also managing to sound fresh, the production is so propulsive and always sends a rush of energy through me. You'll notice that a bunch of songs in this list are dance songs - while we couldn't go to parties in 2020, that doesn't mean we can't listen to fun music!
Unfortunately, Jesy announced a few weeks ago that she is leaving Little Mix - I'm sure it's for the best for her mental health but I'm gonna miss her

#22"Circles" - Megan Thee StallionAlbum: Good NewsIt was a banner year for hot girls and bad bitches everywhere, with Megan scoring by far the biggest hit of her career (Savage) as well as many other absolute bangers (Captain Hook, Girls In The Hood, Don't Stop). However, I chose to highlight Circles, my favorite album cut off of Good News. I absolutely adore how the sample of Jazmine Sullivan's Holding You Down is weaved throughout the production and Megan is confident as ever, serving wordplay and charisma for days. hopefully this is the next single!

#21"Crush On You" - HarloeAlbum: Rivers Run DryDecided to finish off this set with something that will most likely be a first listen for most of you! Spotify put this in my Discover Weekly back in August (? I'm not good with dates) and I've been jamming ever since. I love the sleek, 90's-esque R&B production on this one, it's such a smooth sounding song and the chorus is really catchy as well. Highly recommend this!

Circles is a bop but the next single is almost guaranteed to be Cry Baby since its going viral on its on like how Savage did earlier this year
Break Up Song is sublime and I'm still upset Jesy is leaving aaaaaah
Magic is a bop but it isn't a favorite from the album for me

#20 "DAMN DANIEL" - Bree Runway / Yung Baby TateAlbum: 2000AND4EVALondon rapper Bree Runway has been on my radar since last year, and she delivered her best single yet in 2020 with Damn Daniel (no relation to the white Vans meme from a few years ago). This is another 80's inspired track - more indebted to late '80's hip house - and it absolutely slaps, with an assist from Atlanta rapper Yung Baby Tate (the daughter of Dionne Farris, for any 90s-heads). I especially love the synth breakdown at the end of the song. It's full of personality, confidence and charisma - definitely add this one to your girls night out playlist

You'd think this was be awful by the title making you think of the meme
But the song honestly makes me forget about the meme due to how much of an upfront bop it is I fell in love with Bree this year so eah Damn Daniel is a certified bop

#19 "Morocco" - Alina Baraz / 6lackAlbum: It Was DivineOnto a March Madness discovery - thank you so much SHOOTER for this find! It's an absolutely ethereal bedroom jam. The interplay between Alina and 6lack here sells the song for me, it's a sex song but you can absolutely get lost in the production here!

#18 "What's Your Pleasure?" - Jessie WareAlbum: What's Your Pleasure?British singer Jessie Ware dropped one of the best albums of 2020 with the elegant disco-inspired What's Your Pleasure, with my personal favorite from the album being the title track. It's a more sensual, underplayed yet still danceable electro disco cut which slaps both on and off the dancefloor. The song is on the longer side at 4:38, but like the best disco songs, it doesn't feel overlong at all and enchants you with its groove.

#17"Summer Love" - Carly Rae JepsenAlbum: Dedicated Side BCarly really is the generous queen of pop, and she proved it this year with a whole B side album to her 2019 effort Dedicated. Sambalada put me onto this absolute bop from Summertime Madness, and I'd say this is on par with the best of Emotion (sue me). I feel like this whole list is nu-disco, but I can't help it when the grooves are this magical. It's an anthem to summer hookups turning into a relationship, and the hazy disco production has the perfect steamy July evening energy!

#16"Save Room For Us" - Tinashe / MAKJAlbum: Songs For YouOkay I'm breaking my own rules a bit here since this technically came out in late November 2019, but I only got into this in 2020 thanks to Wintertime Madness (thank you Ky, I believe!) so I'm making an exception. God this song is an absolute jam about holding out hope for lost love, this song perfectly bridges the gap between Nashe's pop and R&B sides. The bass grove is totally infectious and contrasts beautifully with the solemn, cathartic lyrics. If you need another "crying in the club" bop look no further!

#15"everything i wanted" - Billie EilishStand-alone singleThis song is just hauntingly beautiful. I love the dreamlike atmospheric ambient production and how the lyrics intertwine suicidal thoughts with finding support from your family. 2020 was a rough year for me, but this song was always there to comfort me when I was at my lowest. Absolutely stunning.

#14"fever dream" - mxmtoonAlbum: dawnNow for a polar opposite song thematically from the previous entry, while sticking in the indie pop genre, here's possibly the most uplifting song I heard this year. I just love the vibes of this one, it feels like music you'd play while driving down the highway in an indie movie lol. A song about living in the moment and facing your fears also helped in this dire year.

#13"xxx_i_wud_nvrstop_uxxx" - 100 gecs / Hannah Diamond / Tommy CashAlbum: 1000 gecs And The Tree of CluesThis is the greatest sugar rush of 2020 hands down. It reminds me of the Eurodance / techno stuff I used to listen to when I was a kid (Cascada, Basshunter etc) on steroids. It's catchy as sin and just keeps the energy at ten the whole way through. I love Hannah Diamond on this remix too, and Tommy Cash's part grew on me as well, his verse has major Pitbull energy in the best way

#12"smiling when i die" - Sasha SloanAlbum: Self PortraitYeah I know this one's from late 2019 too but I just found it this year, it's my list and I can bend the rules as I please! Like "fever dream", this is another song about living in the moment and making happy memories for when you're older. It's a lot more mellow and wistful than the former, though. I know some people thought this was boring when I submitted it for STM, but for me, it soothes my soul and makes me feel at peace, even if only for a few minutes.

#11"Tokyo Love Hotel" - Rina SawayamaAlbum: SAWAYAMASAWAYAMA was my album of the year so of course I have to include what's grown into my favorite track off the album! Rina weaves her Japanese cultural identity so beautifully into the themes of the album, and especially here, with this song being an allegory for both wanting a long-term relationship (as opposed to a hook-up, which the "love hotel", a hotel used by sex workers, represents) and her feelings with the way Japanese cultural elements are depicted in Western media. The song is also really catchy and the production slaps to boot!
