Nick’s Top 500 Songs of 2020
So this year sucked. But luckily there was a ton of music to help us all get through it. Year-end lists has always been one of my favorite parts of the year, so I’ve been excited to get to this.
Just a reminder that this isn’t my objective ranking of how good I think these songs are, but rather how much impact they had on me and my listening habits. I acknowledge that there are some gems too low or not on the list, while some true crap found its way a little too high up. But as a snapshot of my year, it is what it is.
My general criteria is that the song must have done enough to qualify for the Top 500 before December 1, 2020, with that extra month being used to get a feel for longevity. So songs I first heard on December 1, 2019 will be on this list, while some new songs (or amazing surprise release albums) I’ve listened to in the past month won’t show up until next year.
I also don’t like songs repeating from previous years, because I already struggle enough to whittle this list down to just 500. So with that said, I’d like to acknowledge two songs from last year’s chart that deserve some recognition:
-Dua Lipa - “Don’t Start Now” - Made it to #43 on last year’s list, but the longevity far surpassed its initial two month impact. It got better and better with each listen, and then add in the boost from Future Nostalgia, and you have a song that I would have retroactively placed in last year’s Top 10, possibly as high as #6.
-Zara Larsson f/Sabrina Carpenter - “Wow” - The solo version of this song made it all the way to #26 last year, but after this remix came out and was sent to radio much later, it gained new life with me. I love both of these artists a lot, and I think Sabrina adds a nice touch here. As essentially a new entry, this could probably have made it to the lower end of the Top 20 this year, but I like to keep each year as different as possible so oh well.
