The only artist that comes to mind to get this much hype for their first (official) single is Ariana Grande with "The Way" - which debuted at #10 on the Hot 100. We're witnessing something really interesting, and maybe the potential rise of an upcoming star. Jennifer Lawrence’s “The Hanging Tree” too.

Very interesting to finally see another actress from Disney/Nickelodeon finally gain some musical footing/fanbase. It's been like 5+ years since the last one at this point right? Olivia would've reached #1 on Apple Music without the Morgan Wallen album bomb, she still might be able to though. Interesting 2021's first 3 #1's on Apple Music may be from an R&B female (SZA), Country male (Morgan), and Pop female (Olivia). I'm thinking who was the last Disney/Nick star to get a top 40 song and the only recent I could think of is... Zendaya for Replay and that was just a few months after Ariana's This Way. Some Descendants songs charted but none from the cast ever had their own song chart as far as I know. Olivia Rodrigo's performance is really impressive and while she did start on a Disney Channel show, her breakout is the Disney+ show HSM series. So in a way this is a new era for Disney stars in the streaming era

Not sure if that really counts, as Jannifer Lawrence has never had a music career herself and even said that she hated that song. Meanwhile, it will always be weird to me that the film composer James Newton Howard had a credited YE hit.

Meanwhile, it will always be weird to me that the film composer James Newton Howard had a credited YE hit. It was her first official single, and it debuted #12 so. If an artist doesn’t release music after their debut that doesn’t mean their debut is no longer a debut. She also did release another song in 2015 for what it’s worth. I think it’s worth mentioning because similarly she was also a known actress prior ala Ariana/Olivia who then released a debut single.

Yes, it Jennifer Lawrence hadn't been any music before but she's not primarily a musician and more importantly, it was tied to a movie. It'd be like saying Shallow was the debut single for Bradley Cooper. Ariana and Olivia were transitioning into more music when they made their debuts. There's a big difference, it wasn't just another actor making music.

There's a big difference, it wasn't just another actor making music. I get it then in the sense of it not being for a personal project/debut album. Bradley Cooper also still had a superstar musician tied to his musical output though which is the main difference with that example. If he managed to debut top 20 and reach #1 on “Shallow” after an Oscars performance without Lady Gaga attached I do think it would’ve been argued as a successful debut specifically into music for him.

Sofia Carson from Descendants has gotten a huge push but has yet to chart solo on the Hot 100.
Sabrina Carpenter too... she at least has a #1 hit... on the Bubbling Under.
Seems like a top 20 debut alone would be huge for a Disney startlet in this day and age.

Ugh, don't remind me of how much I wanted Sabrina Carpenter to have a hit for a while now.

It's a gorgeous song too.. a bit Billie Eilish but not too much. Her voice is a lot stronger that Billie's and she can pitch higher than Billie can. I'd say she's more influenced by Lorde than Billie but then again, Billie is influenced by Lorde as well. If we’re gonna talk Billie clones - Tate McRae is RIGHT THERE. “you broke me first” is a bop, yes, but her new song “r u ok” sounds so much like Billie that I cringe when listening. My mom thought YBMF was Billie when she heard it on the radio. Her jazz inflected runs, breathy delivery, dark production....

Even though sonically it is very FINNEAS-ish, Olivia seems to be going for the more overwritten, overly detailed singer-songwriter mold similar to Ed Sheeran

^ 100% get that vibe. A more top 40 leaning ‘folklore’ also comes to mind

Going further back, the Spice Girls debuted at #11 with "Wannabe". Other acts at that time had their first singles debut high thanks to physical single suppression (like Aqua with "Barbie Girl") but the Spice Girls were a phenomenon right out of the gate. Britney was too with "...Baby One More Time".

It actually blew my mind to find out Gabby Barrett is only 20, I legit thought she was in her mid-20s already. Tr*mp supporters do not age well 💅🏽

Is “Body” never going to get its rightful Top 10 peak? :(
It would’ve hit #8 without Xmas...

Drivers License is really solid. The bridge is easily the best part of it, giving off major Lorde vibes.

I love how these 2000s born acts are getting hits easier than 90s born acts 10 years. Like in 2010, the only 90s acts I can think of that were relevant were Souljs Boy, Sean Kingston and Justin Bieber but in 2020 we have Billie Eilish, 24KGoldn, Gabby Barrett, Olivia Rodrigo, Tate McRae, Jawsh 685 and we even had Lil Pump for a couple of hits. Miley Cyrus was born in the 90s and had hits in 2010. Funnily Taylor Swift just barely missed being born in 1990, and Jason Derulo was just a few months off.

in addition to driver's license rocketing to the top, one of olivia's songs from the high school musical tv show is also charting at #134

^ That is freaking insane. I was expecting a top 10 debut, but this is on another level. It probably helps we're currently devoid of any all-around dominant song.
On another note, we really dodged a bullet by preventing "Gucci Gang" from going to #1, thus making Lil Pump the first artist born in the 21st century to achieve this feat. Having Billie Eilish taking the honour instead is much more fitting (and a far better representation of my generation).

If drivers license actually does debut at number one:
- it'll be the first debut single to debut atop the charts (since PILLOWTALK) - first Filipina on to top the charts (#FilPride) - tie Lorde and Billie as the youngest pop star to get a number one at 17

Wouldn’t all the American Idol winner singles that debuted at number one be considered their first single?

And if she doesn't count since she was with The Fugees and also did soundtracks, then Olivia doesn't count since she's part of the HSM cast which I believe charted a single.
