#15 Terri Clark - The Highway
The most polarizing song is leaving, and castleoblivion26 becomes the second participant to lose #1, while razorshark getting rid of the #34 spot. LBTrocks and ccarter1023 also lost the top 5 while, while James clearing his bottom 5. This song was not released as a radio single, but was included in the New Release RD. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #3)Surprised to see this bowing out without making it to the top 10! While this is not the strongest song by Terri, I was not expecting low rankings from other participants than myself. Personally, this song started growing on me after giving a few listens, and I quite enjoy it right now. Terri's delivery is overall very pleasant, and the verse melody is pretty nice, but at the same time, I didn't really feel the energy from her vocal, like I do from many of her other materials, including some recent ones.

#14 Teigen Gayse - I Don’t Wanna Fall In Love
.indulgecountry joined the #1 loss club with this reveal, and LBTrocks lost another top 5 song as well. She is a new act from Kelowna, and this was her debut radio single. While it only made it to #43, it was getting a decent amount of airplays for several months and stayed on the chart for 20 weeks until sent to recurrent. Her follow-up single "Blame The Wine" also failed to crack the top 40, and it was also requested for new release RD, but did not make it to the list. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #10)This honestly underperformed, but I was not too wrong to expect most of the tractors to place them rather high. I sort of wanted to send this to the main RD, as I could see this doing decently well (says #18 ranker, but even if this was my #1, #5 song has 115 points, so this did not have a chance). Great production and strong melody, and her vocal is beautiful. Not keen on the bridge part, but overall very strong song that deserved to be a bigger hit.

#13 Tenille Townes - Girl Who Don’t Care
Tenille Townes YE RD History
2019 #7 Jersey On The Wall 2020 #6 Come As You Are There was a three-way tie here, so the songs are leaving in order according to their standard deviations. This was on the polarizing side with five top 10 rankings, including bboat11 's top 5, and three bottom 10 rankings, including my bottom 5. This is also a big step down for Tenille, missing the top 10 for the first time in this series. This is her first single from upcoming second album. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #2)Jeez, this left way sooner than I expected. While I knew Tenille's vocal was going to be polarizing, I thought this song has a catchy melody and positive vibe that would be well-liked in general, and I found her polarizing voice to be less obvious in this song. Also, this was in New Release RD, so many of y'all already knew this song, and hence, higher rankings were expected. Personally, this song just joined my playlist when listening to it for this RD. I also prefer this song over Jersey and CAYA. Still, my all time fav is Somebody's Daughter.

#12 David James - Then There’s You ft. Genevieve Fisher
The second song with 133 points is the highest duet song by David James and Genevieve Fisher. This is the first song with no bottom 10 ranking, so safe to say nobody hated it, while JAMES and castleoblivion26 lost their top 5 ranking. This is the fourth single from If I Were You EP. These two acts never made it to this RD, David James is from Winnipeg, and he's been around the airplay chart here and there, but never scored any top 10 hit. I could see this being his best performing song on Pulse, but we shall see. On the other hand, Genevieve Fisher is from London ON, and this was her debut on the airplay chart, and she also made it to the chart as a solo singer with Playing Favourite after this song. I might add her song in the list here and there in the future RD. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #19)I do enjoy David James in general, but this was one of few songs that I expected to be received positively around here. At the same time, I thought this sort of production or lyrics would not be the most popular one, hence my #19 prediction. Personally, I think this is a beautiful tune, but I somehow enjoyed If I Were You or Cars, Girls and the Radio more from the EP, while I think I would be a minority.

#11 Brett Kissel - Night In The Life
The last song with 133 points, and the last song to miss the top 10 is Brett Kissel's current single Night In The Life. This received one bottom 10 ranking and four top 10 rankings. Kissel is obviously the regular in this RD, and overall, as a male artist, have been doing alright. I don't recall him receiving a big hate or love. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #17)My prediction was that many of y'all is finding his output to be quite average, and thus, I predicted it to fall somewhere in the middle. He released a new album What Is Life? this year, and it was an alright album. The first single "Make a Life, Not a Living" was pretty good #1 hit, but I prefer this song. I didn't add this song into my playlist when I checked the album initially, but it joined immediately after it was released as the radio single, and now my fav for sure. Very strong chorus melody, and the production is pretty powerful and energetic. Glad it did better than my prediction.

That’s a strong top 10. Wish most of those could be heard on US radio. Many of these songs are written/co-written by Nashville’s biggest writers. Even our beloved Buck Twenty’s song was co-written by Josh Thompson, Jordan Schmidt and Jessie Jo Dillon. I’m sure the snap track was brought to us by Jordan 😌 Interesting that so many of these artists like Buck Twenty are independent and yet somehow have the capital to cut songs from top writers.

#10 Nicole Rayy - Sad Song
Nicole Rayy scored her first top 10 in a RD with Sad Song, escaping the three way tie by 1 point! This song was #16 in the New Music RD, and received some positive rankings from some of the tractors, so I decided to keep it for this RD. On the other hand, her friend Bree Taylor got tanked with Kryptonite, so did not make it to this list. She still has never released a song to the mainstream radio. Huge step up from 2020 RD for her. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #9)I really loved this song when this came out, and I kinda overplayed for myself. Definitely the strongest song by Nicole Rayy, vocally, lyrically, and melodically, so really wish she had a support to release this to the radio.

Teigen was ROBBED. So was Tenille Townes. </3
Happy to see "Fighting" as one of the last two male songs standing though as it was definitely my favorite.

#9 Mackenzie Porter - Drinkin' Song
MacKenzie Porter made it to the top 10 three RDs in a row! On the chart, MacKenzie missed the #1 spot with this song for the first time after three #1 singles since 2018. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #11)This song is a catchy jam, but still These Days is the winner for me. It makes me happy to see her getting #1 in the US with Dustin Lynch, and part of me wants to say that she might have a chance to have a successful single in the US as well, but that was not the case with Lindsay Ell after getting #1 with Brantley Gilbert, so I'm cautiously optimistic here. She's been releasing some new songs lately, but none of them caught my attention, like this song, These Days, or Seeing Other People. Still, I'd love to see her trying on the US radio again sometimes next year.

Sadly don't see her hit with Dustin Lynch translating into a solo hit given that it still feels like she is very unknown as a name (even the hit with Dustin is credited to her AND Lauren Alaina on the charts), but it would be nice if she could make a wave with something. I'm not a big fan of her solo output thus far, but she's not bad by any means either, just kinda somewhere in the middle for me. She kills it on "Thinking 'Bout You" though.

#8 Andrew Hyatt - Neverland
Multiple #1 loss is here, tim and James unfortunately bids farewell to their #1s and I also lost my #3 while bboat11 and razorshark placed this in the bottom 10. This leaves Tyler Joe Miller to be the only male left in this RD. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #12)I love this song and wishing it would make it to the top 5, but also happy to see multiple #1s! Really strong beautlful instrumental production and delivery. Lyrics are not generic, and his vocal has this unique personality. One of the best tunes by this guy for sure. Happy that it made it to the top 10. This was on the polarizing side, but still, looks like Pulse was in favor of this guy, compared with other males on the list.

#7 Tyler Joe Miller - Fighting
The last male song is bowing out! tim scored the perfect ranking, and this song received four top 10 rankings. Following the success of Pillow Talkin' he remains to be one of the most popular males acts in this series. Unfortunately, his career started in 2020, so you won't see his name in the older YE RDs that I am going to host next year. This song was tying for #5 spot until the last list from bboat11 . This is a song about suicidal prevention/mental health, as you could also see in the music video. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #6)Darn, I should have ranked this higher to send this song to the 2021 YE RD list, if that was allowed lol as I can see this doing pretty good, and I do want TJ Miller's name on the bigger RD. This song is really strong lyrically and TJ Miller always brings traditional sound to the Canadian country music scene, while being a new act. Melody was alright, not as strong as Pillow Talkin', but overall great song.

#6 Lindsay Ell - good on you
The last song to miss the top 5, and the 2021 Country YE RD list, is good on you (I mean at this point, it's bboat11 's discretion to also include this or Fighting to the YE RD but yeah, they did lost in the preliminary round in the record). This was at #4 until the last list was received. 5 points behind #5 song. This is the third single from heart theory, and first time for Lindsay to miss the top 5 in this series. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #15)Yeah I love Lindsay Ell, but I have to agree with bboat11 that this song was not her best at all. Sorry to the fans, but I found this song to be extremely weak, slow, and boring, and maybe one of the worst singles that she released. Huge step down from wAnt me back or i don't lovE you. No strong rock production nor beautiful melody was in this song. Poor single choice as well. She could do better for sure, and I'm looking forward to her new album, as I think she is moving on from this album (she's been quiet lately, but for some collaborations with Chayce Bechham, Cassadee Pope, or Kaylee Bell).

This is the top 5 that survives the preliminary round and made it to the 2021 YE Country RD! Again, good on you or Fighting could make it to the list if there's a gap in the list, but that will be determined by the host bboat11. Sykamore - Stay Broke Tenille Arts - Give It To Me Straight Nice Horse - Good At Missing You Madeline Merlo - It Didn’t Jess Moskaluke - Leave Each Other Alone ft. Travis CollinsNow that the top 5 list is here to determine the winner of this preliminary round, I can take a pause. I'm on vacation from tomorrow, so not sure how much I can work on the reveal; it could be as late as January 2nd or so. OR I can continue and try to finish it tonight, if y'all want. Either way, drop your thoughts!

So I don't 'get' this RD... the songs overall are bad, vocals overall are terrible, you all let Buck Twenty escape bottom 5... Lindsay got screwed out of the top 5... I just don't know bout y'all lol. I'll gladly stick to my "floppy" tastes if this is what is accepted as good taste

Wow, I’m kind of surprised to see a song from Terri exit before the top 10! That said, I can understand why this might receive some rankings on the lower-end as there does seem to be lacking in the production behind it. That could have more to do with the pandemic as I think she more or less covered this song as an ode to all of the musicians who couldn’t tour including her. It is hard for me not to try and compare this to the original version by Holly Williams, though, as that’s one of my favorite songs (and albums) from the 2010s.
Speaking of the top 10, I also thought that Tiger’s “I Don’t Wanna Fall in Love” would’ve made it in. This was definitely one of the standouts that I came back around to revisit multiple times. Disappointed to see this not make it any further.
I am happy to see Nicole Rayy’s “Sad Song” make it in, though, as I remember this being a favorite of mine from a previous new releases rankdown. As I also mentioned then, I just love a good sad song anyways lol. I actually thought going into this that it would be my #1 song, but that ended up going to…
“Neverland” which I was mesmerized by on the first listen. I admittedly became somewhat obsessed with this song and had it on repeat for quite some time. I just loved everything about it from the production, Andrew’s voice, and especially the lyrics. Glad to see I wasn’t the only one to put this at the top of their list!
“Fighting” was another song that pulled me in lyrically and one that I came back around to revisit multiple times. If any songs from the male artists were going to make it into the top 10, I’m happy to see it was the right two.
I had to listen to “good on you” a few times before I felt it finally growing on me. Because of that, I’m not surprised it picked up some low rankings as I think I initially had it down in my bottom 5.

I'm just going to say that it is time for some of y'all to engage in some deep prayer and honest self-reflection if you genuinely believe that "good on you" deserved to beat like 90% of the female songs from this year, lol. Sure, I could understand liking it if you like Lindsay Ell, but there is absolutely no way you can honestly put this on an even playing field with something like "Criminal" or "I Don't Love You". THOSE are top 5-worthy songs. THIS mediocrity is merely riding off of the good will and star power built up by those songs.

#5 Nice Horse - Good At Missing You
Okay, I was in Portland and Seattle for a while, but now back to Canada, so let's finish this up. Nice Horse showed up in the RD for the first time, and had a great debut with #5 spot. Still, it was on the polarizing side with five top 10 rankings and three bottom 10 rankings. Nice Horse is an all female band from Alberta, and only made it to the Airplay Chart a few times (Cowgirl is the only one I remember). This song got around 60 airplays and made it to New and Active section. CLD's Thought (Prediction: #7)I love this song, so very happy to see this sneaking into the top 5 with the last list from bboat11 . The melody is great, but the best part is the beautiful steel guitar production. Wish this song received more airplays. Definitely their strongest song to this day. I am mostly certain that I'm the only one who knew this song, so a bit scared to see how this performs in the YE RD, but excited to see the result regardless.

Okay, I was in Portland and Seattle for a while, but now back to Canada, so let's finish this up. Oh no, I just realized I forgot to respond to your PM from a couple months ago asking what you should do when you were in Seattle :'( I'm so sorry!!! I was really busy when I saw it, and meant to come back and respond, but I never did!!! I hope you were able to have a nice trip anyway!! {Spoiler} I grew up about an hour North of Seattle, so my response would have probably been something like "idk, I don't go there unless it absolutely can't be avoided" 😂 And now I live in Spokane, on the complete opposite side of the state...

One of my biggest takeaways from this Rankdown that I haven't had a chance to comment on yet is how much steel guitar there was in this rankdown That was the biggest difference I noticed between this and the mainstream U.S. country market this year. Many of these songs had a very similar sound and style to what you hear on American country radio....with the exception that nearly every song in this playlist found ways to integrate steel guitar in really cool ways! Even the ultra-poppy, unique stuff like Sykamore's "Stay Broke" has steel guitar all over the chorus if you pay attention. It got me thinking, there is absolutely no reason why they can't keep modernizing the sound of country music while continuing to integrate steel guitar... I think it has the perception of being an "older" sound, so the executives are shying away from it. And yet the songs in this playlist all sounded perfectly modern while integrating steel guitar. So hopefully the U.S. mainstream market can get with the program! I went on that tangent because "Good At Missing You" was one of the absolute BEST uses of steel guitar I have heard in years!!! I'm in love with this arrangement!! That was my biggest observation of this song, but of course the melody really gets under your skin by the end of the song as well. I've had this one on repeat both on my playlist and in my head the last few days since I decided to sit down and revisit the songs that made the top 5 here!
