I gave this a whirl. I liked almost all of the songs, so if I voted your favorite low, sorry, but that where's it shook out. For better or worse, I lean into the artists I like, so not being as familiar with my Canadian brethren and cistern, had to just go on the music and how it hit me. With the holidays didn't get to listen as many times as I'd like, but got a pretty good handle on them, I think.

I have to say that “If You Show Me Yours” was an amazing song. I wish we could get some Canadian female artists to try in the US as I feel they are the ones I end up listening to a lot. I thought “Trouble” was okay at first but it’s become one of my favorite songs recently I feel like he nailed the vocals and topic perfectly. I agree sad songs like that aren’t a great idea for a debut single so it would have been best to go with something else.

Good to see Meghan Patrick getting some airplays with Michael Ray, but also, given how challenging it is for a new American female artist to succeed in the US radio scene, it is unfortunately not an easy road for a Canadian female to find a success in the US. Lindsay Ell, Tenille Townes/Arts all ended up giving up on the US radio after all. The next artist I think may be trying is Madeline Merlo, or hopefully Jess Moskaluke one day. MacKenzie Porter could also go in; I had a chance to chat with her and she said her radio introduction with These Days was ruined due to Covid cancelling her radio tour. She may try something out of the new record coming next year, considering that she is backed by Big Loud. As for Teigen, she is independent even in Canada, so she needs to find a strong label first, which I am really hoping to see as well.

1. I feel like “Greatest Show On Dirt” is a lock for top five but beyond that I’m unsure.
2. Personally “Tim+Faith” keeps growing on me since I turned my list in and I hadn’t listened to it until the rankdown.
3. Nothing too polarizing in my opinion compared to the songs this year in the United States.
4. I personally would have ranked Shania last probably I think she would do awful here as well.
5. I think they will be top half but maybe not top five. Both very talented artists who need more U.S success though.
6. I really just got into listening to Canadian music this year and I’m really glad I did I have discovered a lot of amazing songs.

1. What songs are going to be in the top 5 to proceed to the next round of the game? As well, what are in the bottom 5? Top 5: Heartbreaker, Know You, Livin' in A Country Song, Greatest Show On Dirt, Damn You July Bottom 5: Love (The Sweater Song) (please be the last place), Never Have I Ever, Take Me Backroad, Toughest Act To Follow, Another You
2. What are your favourite discoveries? My #1-#6. They can be interesting addition to the main year-end rankdown.
3. What songs are the most/least polarizing? Most polarizing: Giddy Up! Least polarizing: Heartbreaker, Know You
4. Shania is back to country radio in 2023, but this song flopped in the New Release RD. How would she perform here? In the bottom half but closer to the middle.
5. Tenille Townes and Lindsay Ell are typically popular in this game, but both of their songs flopped hard on the chart. How would they do here? From past Pulse histories Lindsay Ell is the favorite, but something tells me if this particular song did not appear in new releases rankdowns, that means some people may not like it that much. I guess Tenille Townes may win over Lindsay Ell slightly.

Opening ThoughtThanks for joining this annual series. Great to see some new faces, as well as the regulars, adding up to the total of 11 lists. If we look back on the Canadian country music of 2023, the biggest surprise to me was that the chart was scaled up from the top 50 to top 60, which lowers the threshold for the chart entrance. In other words, there would be more chances for the independent artists to put their name up on the chart. The other significant event on the positive side is the comeback of Shania Twain and Jason Blaine to the radio chart after sometime of absence. On the negative side, three strong Canadian female artists experiences struggle on the chart; Tenille Townes, Tenille Arts, and Lindsay Ell. It would be interesting to see how these artists who experienced changes would perform in 2024, as well as in this game. I will start the reveal sometimes later today when more people are online. zaclord 🌈 tim kluen Darkest Hour countryfan43 nuggie99 LBTrocks castleoblivion26 .indulgecountry bboat11

#36 Jay Kutcher - Another You
Total: 311 Average: 28.27 Std Dev: 7.64 Chart Peak: #43
bboat11 -16 🌺CountryLineDancer - 17 .indulgecountry - 18 nuggie99 - 25 Darkest Hour - 30 kluen - 30 LBTrocks - 32 tim - 33 countryfan43 - 35 castleoblivion26 - 35 zaclord 🌈 - 36Kicking off the reveal with Another You by Jay Kutcher. This is his first introduction to this series, but he clearly was not the favorite on the board. This song did not receive any top 15 ranking, and zaclord 🌈 had a good start with a perfect ranking. Darkest Hour was correct to predict that this would be in the bottom 5, while the prediction on Owen Riegling was incorrect. This song was written by Trent Harmon, and I can definitely hear his vocal in this song. Interesting fact is that this guy went to top 4 with Quebecois the Voice in 2002 and was performing in a different genre with a stage name Jérôme Couture, until he moved to country in 2023. Definitely an interesting move to change genre and language, and thus, I wanted to include him. Another You has like 15K views on YouTube, but this song was at least popular among some crowds with 604K views. I wonder if any of the Quebecois poster on this board (would it be just Kanenrá:ke or anybody else?) knows this guy in a different genre. CLD's Thought (Prediction #34)Not surprised that this song flopped, considering that his vocal is kinda rough on this song. It took some time for me to adjust to his voice as well, but I do enjoy the production and melody of this song decently, and definitely an interesting figure on the chart given his background, although I would not be surprised if this is the only time we see him on the chart.

The beat of the song just doesn’t do it for me and with nothing else standing out I had to put this near last place.

Another You-- I thought this was ok but nothing special. The title did remind me of Another You by David Kersh.

2017 - #22 Life’s About to Get Good 2020 - #16 Legends Never Die ft. Orville PeckThe next up is Canadian icon Shania Twain, already exiting as a second song to leave the game. This song performed awfully as @country43 predicted, including four #36 rankings (this might be the record in this series). .indulgecountry becomes the first participant to lose a top 10 song. This was a comeback of Shania to the chart for the first time since 2017, but also flopped badly. CLD's Thought (Prediction #21)Pleasantly surprised that this song performed so badly here, as I thought she would last longer due to familiarity. This is one of the weakest songs from the album, and awful radio single choice, Waking Up Dreaming was right there... Both chorus and verse melody sounds really annoying to me.

#34 Brett Kissel - Never Have I Ever
Total: 273 Average: 24.82 Std Dev: 8.64 Chart Peak: #22
CLD's Thought (Prediction #27)Not too surprised, but disappointing result. The reference to the drinking game and banjo production, in combination with catchy melody, creates fun vibe that I enjoy, and it is a fun song at concerts as well. I saw Brett Kissel in person twice this year, so I definitely feel attached to this tune and him in general. His compass project was definitely a creative one though, so I am hoping to include one of my fav tunes from the project in the 2024 game, whether or not that song would be a radio single. I had a chat with him and asked him about his idea on the US radio scene, and he said it would be quite challenging to send a radio single there without stronger label backup facing strong competitions, and the song will stall somewhere on the chart without making much impact, so not too surprised that Canadian artists are after all sticking to Canadian market. He said he had released Airwaves to the US radio though, and I'm not too sure how that one went (maybe a small market?).

#33 Graham Scott Fleming - Toughest Act To Follow
Total: 269 Average: 24.45 Std Dev: 9.42 Chart Peak: NA
CLD's Thought (Prediction #32)Since I felt like this would be the only time I would introduce him to the game, I decided to add him into the list. Graham is an average vocalist, but I do enjoy the overall melody of this song quite well, as well as the steel guitar (I think) bridge. I suppose the reason for the hatred is the production, as it may sound a bit messy at the chorus...?

Toughest Act To Follow-- Didn't like the cocky vibe. Musically was ok.

Very average to me but nothing awful. I feel like the lyrics aren’t that bad but the production does drag this back to average. Also the new Shania music is really bad sadly as I like her older output. Brett was not that great either so I’m not upset to see any of these first couple songs go.

#32 Lemon Cash - Breakup Song
Total: 266 Average: 24.19 Std Dev: 7.27 (5th Lowest) Chart Peak: #40
CLD's Thought (Prediction #30)The vocal and production of the song is pretty average, and although I tend to enjoy these uptempo breakup songs, the lyrics are also mid. I just love the catchiness though, not so much as a country tune, but it sounds like those singalong teen pop songs that I enjoy solely because of the melody. My guess is that this is their only appearance on the chart, just like another duo Buck Twenty.

#31 Owen Riegling - Love (The Sweater Song)
Total: 265 Average: 24.09 Std Dev: 9.48 Chart Peak: #29
countryfan43 - 8 kluen - 12 bboat11 - 17 LBTrocks - 20 zaclord 🌈 - 20 🌺CountryLineDancer - 26 nuggie99 - 27 .indulgecountry - 30 castleoblivion26 - 33 tim - 36 Darkest Hour - 36 Good news for Darkest Hour and tim , Owen Riegling is finally exiting. On the other hand, @conutry43 lost their first top 10 song. Owen Riegling is also a new addition to the chart, and unlike Lemon Cash or Jay Kutcher, I think he has some potential to stick around, already releasing a follow-up single with more mature mood, called Old Dirt Road (I hear this a lot on Spotify ads). He is with Universal, so he might actually be able to develop a decent career, although this song was only a minor hit. CLD's Thought (Prediction #33)This song is definitely unique. Owen's vocal is quite mid, but the sudden change of tempo and production between the verse and chorus is making this song stand out, and also polarizing (more hate than love here for sure). The theme focusing on the relationship between lost sweaters and breakup is on a creative side, but I wish the entire song had a storyline around it, instead of the brief mention at the bridge. I'm not 100% sold on this guy yet, but curious to see what else he has to offer.

I enjoyed this song a lot even if it seems kind of silly at times. Just a fun song to sing to however I’m not surprised it went out this quick.

#30 Dean Brody - Right Round Here
Total: 263 Average: 23.91 Std Dev: 7.44 Chart Peak: #9 (still rising) kluen - 10 LBTrocks - 15 countryfan43 - 19 Darkest Hour - 21 🌺CountryLineDancer - 22 tim - 24 bboat11 - 27 nuggie99 - 28 castleoblivion26 - 31 .indulgecountry - 32 zaclord 🌈 - 34 Dean Brody YE RD History

The next up is a male face of Canadian country music, Dean Brody. This song is still climbing on the chart as a fourth single from the new album. This is one of the worst performing songs by Dean in this series. This song was written by the label mate; The Reklaws.
CLD's Thought (Prediction #26)A little surprised that this song existed so early, as Dean Brody is performing better in this game usually. It is quite average as a song, so that must be the reason why it did not really go up high in any of the list, but I do enjoy the sound of this song, especially compared with three preceding singles from the same album. Typical Dean Brody lyrics and production that my ears were expecting, instead of some disaster like Broke lol.
