hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=325073&title=LET%2527S-ROCK-THOSE-NEW-RELEASESSaturday, February 6, 2021 LET'S ROCK THOSE NEW RELEASES Foo Fighters' latest Roswell/RCA release, Medicine at Midnight, is tracking to a debut of 60-70k after one day with pure album sales comprising the bulk of that number. This should guarantee The Foos a Top 5 debut. Also just arriving is The Weeknd's hits compilation, The Highlights (XO/Republic), to correspond with his Super Bowl halftime performance on Sunday. In recent weeks, The Weeknd's After Hours (XO/Republic) has averaged between 30-35k. We're sure the retrospective of his biggest hits will soar above that average, but can it do enough to challenge the resurgent Morgan Wallen, whose latest just finished the week with more than 150k despite industrywide condemnation of his recent behavior? We'll have a proper projection for The Weeknd on Monday, once we've had a chance to gauge the reaction to his performance.

hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=325105&title=TOP-20%253A-HIGHLIGHTS-REELTuesday, February 9, 2021 TOP 20: HIGHLIGHTS REELMorgan Wallen remains on top as Dangerous: The Double Album (Big Loud/Republic) spends its fifth week at #1. Garth Brooks’ 1998 Double Live (Capitol Nashville) was the last country album to spend its first five weeks in the lead. The Weeknd’s The Highlights (XO/Republic) lands at #2 following Sunday’s Super Bowl performance and Foo Fighters’ new Roswell/RCA set, Medicine at Midnight, debuts at #3. Wallen's prior Big Loud set moves into the Top 15. Republic, alas, will control only 40% of the Top 5 and also of the Top 10.

The racists still out in droves, I see. Shame Foo Fighters or The Weeknd weren't able to overthrow him.

Ahh, because a rule where every The Weeknd studio album loses popularity after he performs at the Superbowl makes total sense.
*Mandatory complaint compilations should be sales only aside from new exclusive tracks included on them*

^Yeah. Basically all the streaming and song sales of the songs included in The Highlights and After Hours will get counted toward the former until the week the latter outsells the former. It will be interesting to see whether it will become a game of musical chairs.

His team really wanted to claim a big BB200 ranking. #2 is probably higher than what After Hours would have reached on it's own. So in that sense, they won.

Yes, wise to release The Highlights to coincide with the Super Bowl. Guarantees a nice peak for the compilation. Regardless of when After Hours overtakes it, it will continue to rank decently, given it will probably outsell his other releases for a while and benefit from the streaming activity.

Those #'s for The Highlights seem very low consider it includes all his hits + Super Bowl effect The numbers are impressive considering the Highlights is basically a compilation of songs fans have heard countless times before and have already. The people streaming and buying the project are just supporting but most, if not all of them, already have those songs in their music libraries. It was never going to do 150K or more, especially considering the fact that the Weeknd is just 10 years into his career and is still releasing music frequently. If he was retired or hadn't released music in a couple of years and then decided to release a greatest hits album with maybe a few new tracks, then one could expect massive numbers.

Those #'s for The Highlights seem very low consider it includes all his hits + Super Bowl effect Both BBTM & Starboy were selling 8.5-9k on average weekly last year (normal weeks). Afther Hours Dec-Jan was selling 21-25k (depending on the week). Last 4 weeks because of hype it was at 30-35k on average. I will assume 3k for the other tracks not on these 3 albums
Lets assume the tracks on the GH album are 70% of all the respective albums streams (since big hits carry older album - very likely). So we will get 3+6.3+6.3+17.5=33.1k (on a normal week) Based on HitsDD it is supposed to do 70k SEA so that is double. *keep in mind that After Hours songs are still "fresh", and will keep decreasing so the GH won't be selling 30k on regular weeks. +i went with the higher number in every calculation* This album won't be the best selling of the year, but will most likely be top 10 for 2021. I don't see top 5. 2020-onward it won't be top 10, but it will park itself in top 20/25. I saw people saying Morgan will have the #1 album (in previous thread). He won't, he has 600k so far, so as long as Drake or Adele drop an album the #1 spot goes to them. Drake will need to drop his album June-July at the latest, because otherwise Wallen will have accumulated too big lead to be surpassed in short time. Post Malone also can outdo him (if he drops) ,Kendrick is also a possbility.
But yeah, Wallen most likely will end up with a top 3 album of the year, because i don't see all of these names dropping an album soon enough. Ahh, because a rule where every The Weeknd studio album loses popularity after he performs at the Superbowl makes total sense. *Mandatory complaint compilations should be sales only aside from new exclusive tracks included on them* They changed the rule for compilation albums in 2017 (but only for various artist compilation albums). They should apply the same rules to GH albums aswell.
They made a compilation album chart, they can do the same with GH albums.
For RIAA i can see an argument (weather valid or not an argument can be made for GH albums). But for albums going up and down on BB200 like a god damn yoyo every second week is a NO from me aswell.

Songs on streaming are attached to an album, or are singles with no album attachment - and often times exist in multiple forms. There could be the single, album, album deluxe, artist compilation, various artist hits compilations (the Now series for example), and others. It makes little sense to me why plays from all of these count toward one album rather than its source. If I’m listening to the After Hours album on streaming, it’s a bit ridiculous to have all the songs except four count toward that on an album chart while the four singles go toward the Hits compilation just because it sold more in that particular week. This is an arbitrary rule that doesn’t need to exist.*
*the exception being video streaming sites like YouTube where the song isn’t attached specifically to an album. The back and forth of it is still a bit ridiculous though.

And April is only 6 weeks away.

Ah The Weeknd’s streams are going to that hits package due to the ‘Queen rule’... the top seller gets the streams. In that case, don’t expect a whole lot of stability on the charts.

They should just impose the most straight-forward rule - assign the streams to whichever album the listener selected it from - whether greatest hits, compilation, or the original studio, no questions asked. It seems the most logical.

This country is so gross, the way his units keep on going up in spite of everything. Vile!

I wonder how many people are conscious of what album they stream from, though. For instance, I searched for "Under Pressure" earlier and hit play on what came up. I couldn't tell you if it was from the original album or one of their various compilations.

Video streams are also included, and they are not attached to specific albums.
The best rule imo is counting any song's streams towards its original parent studio album only. A GH/Compilations with old hits thrown together in the streaming era is like a 'This Is Rihanna' playlist on Spotify counting for the album charts. It shows people are listening to Rihanna, but not how actually popular a specific album by her was that week.
We see that a The Weeknd playlist reached #2 on the charts following the SuperBowl. However we do not see the actual gains his studio albums had... on an albums chart.
Labels are def gonna start abusing this idea more probably, and the albums chart will just be hogged with Compilation albums that have an artists 15-50 most streamed hits/songs. It also doesn't make sense to compare the streams of studio albums to compilations in any context. If Drake were to put out a compilation with his top 100 songs on Spotify, does that suddenly make it more popular than every studio album he's released? Or is it simply a playlist of all his studio albums that has no business being compared to them individually?

I'd assume that most often, people would know which album the song is being streamed from. As for only counting toward studio albums, there is the argument that of course many people often go to an artist's greatist hits collection to sample the highlights from their career, with no knowledge or intention of visiting the original album (except for video streams, which maybe should always be counted towards the original album). There are many arguments to be made both for and against studio vs. greatest hits, so regarding this matter I just say go with what is the simplest and most directly logical.
Another option is to count it for BOTH the greatest hits and the original. I mean, Billboard already does double counting with having track sales and streams count for both the singles and albums charts, right?

As for only counting toward studio albums, there is the argument that of course many people often go to an artist's greatist hits collection to sample the highlights from their career, with no knowledge or intention of visiting the original album (except for video streams, which maybe should always be counted towards the original album). There are many arguments to be made both for and against studio vs. greatest hits, so regarding this matter I just say go with what is the simplest and most directly logical. Well this isn't the case especially for older artists. I will take Barbra Streisand as an example. Her most streamed songs match perfectly with the 10 songs that are shown in the "Popular section". Most people don't know that "Woman in Love" is from the album "Guilty", it is just the first song that appears on her page and they stream it. That simple. The last column is the artist's pick playlist that appears next to the popular section.
This happens with newer artists aswell. Now i know someone will say that that is the point of the Popular section. Right? - It is the songs that are determined based on the songs that have the most streams the last 7/28 days (idk exactly) and the all time streams that the song has.
For artists that don't have new albums in recent years, the #11 song rarely gets more streams than the #10 song, so the Popular section remains static. You can observe if you want for whatever artist that the top 5 almost never changes (the 8-12 can sometimes dance around). So the songs that get the most streams are the 10 songs from that section (most people don't know the studio albums that the songs belong to). I will mention the p-word. Yup, we can pretend that playlists don't play any role in this, but they do (not as significant as some make it seem, but still). Songs that appear on 80s Rock, All Out 80s, 90s R&B ... I don't listen to playlists, but i check them out to see similar artists/songs to some that i like. And even though some of these playlist are updated "often" most songs stick around and are never removed from the playlist. There are popular playists that haven't been updated for years. So where should these plays go ? - Depending weather the song is linked from the studio album or the GH album. lol Also there are people that stream the playlists and don't know weather the band is U2, Pet Shop Boys or Def Leppard. They just listen to the song, and the next one after and ... If they don't know the artists we shouldn't even discuss the albums.

That said since Billbaord 200 is a weekly chart, they should just do what they did to compilation albums from various artist. Only pure sales should count. It is a weekly chart and we should see which studio albums are the most popular right now. But looking at the all time sales (RIAA) i am still indiferent. Because of this, i will use the freshest example. Album | 2020 | 2030 (A) | 2030 (B) | BBTM | 5xP | 9xP | 6xP | Starboy | 4xP | 7xP | 5xP | After Hours | 2xP | 7/8xP | 3/4xP | Highlights | // | Platinum | 10/11xP |
The point is the totals are the same, The difference is will he have 1 huge album and 3 medium sized ones. Or will he have 3 big albums (no huge one/ but no small ones either). This album was done for the purpose of certificantions, no one cares about a #2 peak on Billboard 200. Even if it went #1, so what ? Not like the next album from The Weeknd won't reach that spot. So i will repeat, since it is a weekly chart, GH compilations should be pure only. Even if they go with a bit worse one - streams count for GH albums only it is still better than the current "rule" that is in place by Billboard. I can see the point against GH on RIAA aswell, on the biggest albums list mostly GH albums will move in units and surpass studio albums. Only studio albums like Rumours/ Back In Black etc. stand a chance against GH albums. That is why i am indiferent regarding this. An artist will have 55M albums sold (weather 25+20+5+3+1+1 or 10+10+10+10+5+5+5).
Labels are def gonna start abusing this idea more probably, and the albums chart will just be hogged with Compilation albums that have an artists 15-50 most streamed hits/songs. It also doesn't make sense to compare the streams of studio albums to compilations in any context. If Drake were to put out a compilation with his top 100 songs on Spotify. Well you know that Double albums are albums on 2 discs with a runetime of over 100 minutes based on RIAA. Pure sales count double because the price is higher since you purchase 2 CDs.
Regular albums /1500 streams Double albums / 3000 streams Tripple albums / 4500 streams
RIAA needs to do this.
Billboard on the other hand needs to make ALL compilaton albums pure only.

] That was what we were saying, they need to release very soon, Drake in April should still be clear case, Drake in June might not be. And April is only 6 weeks away. Adele could release in October and she would still have the biggest album of the year lol.

I think streams should always go to the original studio album, and I’d almost go so far as to say that compilations have no place on the charts these days unless they include original material or sell a lot of copies. This is one reason there should be more artist charts. If there were charts for most consumed and/or most streamed artists, that would show the same effect as these compilations by showing whose discography is being listened to the most.
