Brandi’s last album was 2018’s Grammy-winning By The Way, I Forgive You. Since then she’s recorded an album with the Highwomen, produced albums for Tanya Tucker and the Secret Sisters, and released a few singles and one-offs including the single from Pixar’s Onward last year, a pair of Soundgarden covers for Record Store Day (including “Black Hole Sun”!) and a song for the new tv series Clarice, which just came out.
This is her second time recording a cover of “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” The last time was nearly a decade ago for a John Denver tribute album, which she recorded a cover with Emmylou Harris. This one is much slower and was used in the trailer for the show - it was very ominous.

In an interview to promote her new memoir, which is incredible and worth the read, Brandi confirmed that her next album has already been recorded. She described it as "very dramatic" and said "the vocals are over the top, and I'm a pretty over-the-top singer, so that's really saying something." Consider me perched.

She described it as "very dramatic" and said "the vocals are over the top, and I'm a pretty over-the-top singer, so that's really saying something." Consider me perched. Can’t wait! On one hand, I’m scared because this will be her first album after her “breakthrough” to a wider audience via the Grammys, so I’m hoping it’s not in any way watered down. On the other hand, looking back three years later, her last album I think is her best one and will be hard to top. But Bear Creek was hard to top and she did that. I can’t picture a scenario where I won’t love it, ...unless it’s watered down to appeal to a wider audience. Also, I’m enjoying her book too. I found it at a bookstore last week and am halfway done now (well, as of Sunday. I usually only read on the weekends). Some interesting serials about her collaborating with big name producers and how they came to be. I am finding though that her stories don’t go into much detail. She gives some background on events in her life that inspired her songs, which are directly referenced, but they’re all just kind of glossed over so you don’t really get the full effect of how the songs themselves really came out. But hearing a bit about the inspiration behind That Year and Sugartooth is still heartbreaking all the same.

Does anyone know if The Joke Grammy performance video can be found anywhere? The one on YouTube is locked for anyone outside the US I think and I can’t find it anywhere else.

Im hoping for a bundle package like I got with the last album - tho it occurs to me that they might not do that because Billboard…
Mostly I wanted a CD and a record and if there were any add-ons like a T-shirt or something I’d do that too.

I have the gold vinyl on hold from my local record shop and by coincidence, I took tomorrow off, so it’ll be a Brandi-filled day indeed! ☺️

This album is gorgeous. It makes me break down. Makes me vulnerable. The songwriting is incredible. It’s a masterpiece for someone who has already been there.

Another AOTY contender, but man, is it a crowded year, with all the girls delivering the GOODS. Brandi is a vocal MANIAC. Like...who else is singing with such broken rawness, while maintaining perfect control? She really sings with reckless abandon and I fucking love her for it. I dig that she is a Queer person of faith, too. I can relate. An A+ for me. I will say, though, that she sold this as a different album in all the press. This is a lot milder (and in some cases, with you and Me On The Rock and Mama Werewolf, pretty upbeat) than I expected. I expected some Adele or, particularly Celine, the way she was describing the drama and the way she sang. There are flashes of that (Letter To The Past, Right On Time), but...not the vibe this album gives me. That's OK, though. It's still a perfect album. Edit: See my comment after Sinners, Saints, and Fools OMG. Still shook.
Letter To The Past (I. FUCKING. CAN. NOT. Song Of The Year material, yet again. She was smart to put it as the centerpiece of the album, as far as track placement goes. Up to that song, I was like OK, this is a really, really strong album, but Letter To The Past killed me.) Throwing Good After Bad (almost a tie with Letter To The Past and it probably will end up that way over time. This is the Brandi I LOVE. What. A. FUCKING. CLOSING. SONG.) Right On Time You And Me On The Rock (a bop!) This Time Tomorrow (made me cry while looking my dog and I were looking at each other) Broken Horses (her vocal cracks and wild vibrato at the end of some of her phrases are so perfect here. Wow. What a VOCALIST.) Mama Werewolf When You're Wrong (I don't know why, but this kinda reminds me of Sheryl Crow from..the Detours album? I think that's the one. Not in a bad way, though. I love that album. That shriek at the end though...goosebumps and unexpected.) Sinners, Saints, and Fools (OK, maybe this is what she meant, because this is PRETTY dramatic, LOL, but there is literally nothing else like this on the album so...my comment stands. This song is WILD, OMG.) Stay Gentle (soooo pretty!)

Perhaps this is a side effect of them shifting back to a peer-to-peer voting system. Since there’s not an “Americana” committee to decide, the majority obviously doesn’t think her music fits the criteria for that genre at the moment. Or they could be penalizing her for her popularity and want to give other Americana artists a fighting chance. Either way, it’s very odd.
Love the album btw.
