100. Puss’n Boots (86): I discovered this one recently. I like the instrumental (especially in the bridge) and the chorus melody, and I think it’s a fun song, but a bit monotonous and just didn’t compare with the 80+ gems here.
99. She’s Sexy and 17 (80): I’ve liked it since ‘83 -nice production that modernized a classic rock’n roll sound- but I think it fits Mainstream better. Of course the lyrics are problematic, which has taken it few notches down for me in more recent years.
98. Is it love (100): There was a nice disco/ new wave instrumental underneath it, but the song didn’t really go anywhere to me. Very much album filler material. Worst discovery for sure.
97. Strip (93): another song I discovered recently -with some disappointment. The instrumental and melody are a bit lazy to me, except for the pretty good bridge. Chorus is ok. And his voice in the verses sound almost lifeless instead of sexy.
96. Red red wine (72): oh my, they could never win -namely, escape bottom 5- right? Reggae isn’t that bad, guys, it can be fun and chill. This was very popular back in Peru in ‘83, even more than in ‘88. I like the original version much more than the 88 one with Astro. I actually like this version much more than the original. And even when I like this, I had to leave it in my 70s... still, I was hoping this would not leave in the bottom 5 :(
95. Let them all talk (83): I found its instrumental a bit messy, and that chorus criss-crosses the line from euphoric to chaotic annoyance, but at least it was interesting and had cooler verses.
94. Whammy Kiss (81): they were one of my favorite groups back in ‘83, as I loved all the 5 songs I had heard by then. So I have a soft spot for all their music. I heard this one first only in the 00s. I like the fun carefree Rock Lobster vibe, including the girl animal-like ad-libs, but the melody wasn’t that strong to escape my bottom 20.
93. Lifeline (85): this was too simple for them, and too AC for this rankdown. Not a bad song per se, and vocals are as good as expected, but the melody was a bit underwhelming. It was an interesting discovery to hear them in a song that sounded more like ABC.
92. I’ll Tumble 4 U (76): This has always been a fun little song that I like hearing once in a while, but it’s also one of the simplest songs by CC. This and Mr. Man are probably my least favorite CC singles, so I’m fine with seeing it bottom 10.
91. Nellie the Elephant (90): fun discovery. I didn’t mind it at all. I would’ve ranked it a bit higher if the verses were stronger...
90. Room with a View (91): just a couple points from having two PPP. Argh. Another nice discovery. I liked the coed vocals, the melody was okay, but the instrumental sounded a bit cheap.
89. Everyday I Write The Book (94): this had a nice core melody underneath, but the chorus got too repetitive almost to the point of annoyance to me. I didn’t feel it too Modern either. Not a bad discovery tho.
88. Every Word Means No (84): this song started another tier in my ranking, as in I like this much more than songs below it. Nice melody, vocals, and cool instrumental. Good discovery but I needed a bit more oomph to rank it higher.
87. Love Song (82): I listened to this song first in the late 90s. I really like the joyous, bombastic production, and the main melody, even if it’s a bit simple. The guy’s vocals are the biggest reason why I didn’t rank it higher...
86. Just Got Lucky (64): I discovered this in the recent Lost 80s Hits RD. And I’ve liked it more since then. The instrumental and harmonies are pretty good, catchy, fun. My biggest loss thus far
85. Nothing Bad Ever Happens to Me (98): yeah! One of just a handful of discoveries I really didn’t care for. Weak melody and ok instrumental made it for clear bottom 5. Far from the strength of Not my slave.
84. Church Of The Poison Mind (59): Still not one of my fop 5 CC songs, but this is a strong tune, with a pretty good old-school, gospel vibe, although maybe a bit too pop for this list.
83. The Stand (47): another song I discovered not long ago thanks to Pulse, and I dug it. I like the anthemic chorus and the instrumental enough to make the top half in this strong list.
82. Legal tender (50): Awww. A bit too low for this bop. This was the 5th song I heard of them and loved. They sound great, and the more new wave production and instrumental with synths and guitars work very well to me.
81. Making Flippy Floppy (77): I don’t remember hearing this before. The instrumental was the best element of the song to me, including the funk guitar, but the melody was a bit too simple/monotonous.
80. I Confess (43): the wrong song goes first
I had forgotten about this song, which I remember hearing at some point in the 1900s. I really like the instrumental, main melody, despite its repetitiveness, and vocals. I understand it may be too pop for this RD...
79. Never Stop (95): I like several Echo songs, but this was surprisingly mediocre IMO. The melody was quite weak, even in the chorus, and the instrumental was also also disappointing except for the first part of the bridge.
78. True love 2 (70): very interesting discovery. It sounded like a mix of B-52s with BAD. Good harmonies, nice disco pop melody with the Doobie Brothers and other sorta samples/inspirations.
77. Love is the law (56): This was a great discovery for me. I really liked the instrumental, production, harmonies. It rapidly clicked because it reminded me a lot of some Spanish rock songs of the 80s.
76. 2000 miles (92): I discovered this song last December thanks to the Kylie Xmas rankdown. I really liked her version, and then I learned it was a cover of this song. I do like it a bit but I just didn’t see it fitting this alternative list well.
