Plus I'm sure the label cares way more about getting the second single of their potential new star to become a lengthy hit than getting a high debut. Releasing on Thursdays does aide in the former. It gives the song a day to itself to generate buzz and rapport before the swath of new releases the next day. You make no sense, a record label wants both a high debut and a hit with longevity. Why wouldn't they want a hit with a high debut? Anyway this is predicted to debut at #9 on the Hot 100 next week which is a high debut especially for a new artist such as Olivia Rodrigo.

If this debuts at the top 10 of the Hot 100,it would make her the first artist to debut Top 10 with their first two singles

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a single since it wasn't pushed to radio anywhere, so it's been classified as a promotional single for the show.

Yeah it feels like the industry has made the same "let's ignore the first song" deal that they did with BeyoncΓ© and Ariana. Granted those two songs did very little while Olivia's at least streamed really well.

This piece is important: βReleasing on Thursdays...gives the song a day to itself to generate buzz and rapport before the swath of new releases the next day.β Most new releases come on Friday so itβs easy to get lost in the shuffle, especially if youβre a rising new artist with a lot of competition, and pop newcomers usually are. Thursday releases may not contribute to a full first week but can help get ahead of the pack to ensure more overall plays/sales/attention. Really thereβs pros and cons to both scenarios and neither is perfect.

Selena Gomez did it perfectly with "Lose You to Love Me", which debuted early yet went #1 on it's first full week.

I wish her fucking high school musical song didnt chart so people would stop with these BS conversations about whether or not it counts as her debut chart entry or debut single

I said "more," not "only." Of course a high debut would be great, but that's clearly not the end goal of this release. Especially since this is the follow up her first hit. The focus is very clearly on making sure this leaves a lasting impact so their potential new star doesn't lose all of that potential with a flash in the pan second single. A high debut means nothing if it's off the charts in 10 weeks. And I already explained why a Thursday release aides in their end goal.

Iβm beginning to really like this, especially as a change-up to all the lite R&B/disco around (which I also love btw).

I had the opening melody all day in my head yesterday. It certainly sounds like a Melodrama leftover, but a damn good one.
