In my opinion, the longevity of positions is what cost 34+35 from reaching #1. It didn't help that the 34+35 remix video release was botched. However, Heartless and Blinding Lights had a similar release pattern to positions and 34+35. The lack of longevity for Heartless played right into the hands of Blinding Lights for having this run. Let's be honest, if Heartless has the longevity of positions, I don't think Blinding Lights becomes this big. Go back one more year, Ari had the same thing with thank u, next and 7 Rings. The result was different because thank u, next faded from the top of the chart fairly quickly, allowing 7 Rings to have a long run at #1 and become her biggest hit to date.

positions and 34+35 were hits, no question. However, if you are going to team up with 3 A-listers like Ari, Megan, and Doja, the goal is not to have just a hit, but to get to #1. Not getting to #1, no matter how you spin it, is a colossal failure.

She is truly OVER.

However, when you put all those resources into a hit, especially one that was already a Top 10, you really can't justify it falling short of the ultimate prize. Without Megan and Doja, I still believe 34+35 peaks in the 4-6 range. In my opinion, adding Megan and Doja for 2-4 spot higher and a non-#1 peak wasn't really the best use of resources. It would be like The Weeknd adding Drake and Justin Bieber to Save Your Tears right now, only for it to peak at #2.

34+35 not reaching #1 after the remix might be disappointing but definitely not a failure.

I will assume that those numbers are from Nielsen/Alphadata or someone similar. So it is from Billboard (Nielsen).
Well this is probably because Nielsen changed the way they conted video streams. They filter almost everything. 2018 vs 2019 285.1B vs 401.2B (+40.7%) Video streaming MidYear 18 vs 19 was similar 124.7B vs 174.2B (+39.6%) Video streaming approximation: if 40,811,096,000 are in 12 weeks in 52 weeks we will get: 176,848,082,667 (it might not be linear in reality, but good enough for this)
2019 vs 2020 401.2B vs 176.8B (-55.9%) Like they said in both 2020 reports:
Opened the last few Year-End reports. And video streaming increased every year: 2015 compared to 2014; 2016 compared to 2015 ... 2019 compared to 2018.
I can see the logic behind removing UGC (even though i think it is stupid and doesn't hold any water, but not active enough listening - OK). But removing logged out views till this day i can't understand why. Can't find a simple reason.
Anyways good to see that overall Audio is still increasing despite only few albums being released last few months. Catalog streaming is going nuts.

Regarding UGC, RIAA has:
"Only official video streams (i.e. not user-generated content) are eligible. For the avoidance of doubt, only official videos hosted on either the Artist’s or the Label’s channel(s) will be immediately eligible for consideration. With respect to third-party hosted videos, if a music label is able to fully monetize an official video and receive reporting from the video-hosting platform (e.g. YouTube), and that the video-hosting platform’s reporting does not consider the content to be UGC, then the streams are accepted. If a video-hosting platform flags the video hosted on a third-party channel as UGC, the video cannot be accepted, regardless of any monetization or licensing deals that the Artist/Label may have with the third-party channel."

My take is that I think they were planning for it to overtake Mood for the #1, but the runaway success of Drivers License put a dent in those plans and it ended up peaking at #2 as a result. It happens. Still not as embarrassing as Hotline Bling botching its opportunity to beat out The Hills for #1 before Hello and Sorry swooped in.

lol "34+35" is seriously about to fall below "Positions" in overall radio I'm late I know but I think it's important noting Positions was only released a week before 34+35. So it falling below Positions isn't that crazy as they both ascended the charts around the same time. That, and "positions" being more AC-radio-friendly, I would say. AC radio support does make a noticeable difference when it is this late into a song's chart run (as that is usually when songs are climbing on that format).

The music video for Montero (CMBYN) not surprisingly was #1 in the US weekly YouTube chart with 28 million views, which is over four times those for the #2 Back in Blood. Tombstone remained at #3 but gained 42.6%, Peaches fell from #2 to #4, Richer debuted at #5 and Hellcats & Trackhawks at #10. LTDO dropped from #9 to #13.

"Hotline Bling" should have gotten that #1 peak. Also, to correct something from my other post, three songs had spent 30 or more weeks in the top ten before 2017, not one. "Uptown Funk" and "Smooth" hadn't crossed my mind, as they never did tie LeAnn's record. Nonetheless, it is still entirely possible for "Mood" to stay in the top ten for another week or two.

Obsessing with peaks in the streaming era is so dumb to me (ofc we keep an eye on them and care, but obssess over them and to think they're indicative of the sucess of the song?).....

34+35 is overall a success. Not all musicians have a no.2 hit. But like it or not, by adding 2 big rappers, with a music video destined to be a viral, and the song stalled at no.2, so this remix project was relatively a failure. (not the song itself, but the remix project instead) In case her remix was just with some B-list artists, probably not much a failure.

the remix got the album an extra boost, extra 70m streams and gave 34+35 a boost. Despacito situations are rare and are not supposed to happen everyday. 34+35 was already a hit, it's not like Doja and Megan would get it to be bigger than drivers license which was humungous at the time.

Is there a thread for failure last minute remix projects with big features? He he Failure means the remix didnt help much the original's Hot 100 position/was hyped to hit no. 1 Hot 100 but stalled at maybe top 5/top 10 instead.

Morris 'B.B.' Dickerson, Founding Member of War, Dies at 71 By Ashley Iasimone 4/3/2021 Click to copy www.billboard.com/articles/news/obituary/9550962/bb-dickerson-dead-war-founding-member/Morris "B.B" Dickerson, a founding member of the band War, has died at the age of 71. B.B. Dickerson, bassist and vocalist for the funk rock band, passed away peacefully at a Long Beach, Calif., hospital on Friday (April 2) after a long, undisclosed illness, a representative confirms to Billboard. Dickerson, who was born in 1949 in Torrance, Calif., and got his start on the bass guitar at the age of 12, helped develop War's signature sound co-writing and playing on tunes like "The Cisco Kid," "Why Can't We Be Friends," "Low Rider," "Summer" and more. He also sang for the band, and his lead vocal can be heard on War's hit "The World Is a Ghetto." War peaked on the Billboard charts in 1973 with the album The World Is a Ghetto (which went to No. 1) and the single "The Cisco Kid" (No. 2). Before forming War, Dickerson had performed in a group called The Creators along with his uncle Howard E. Scott. The Creators split during the Vietnam War, and while Dickerson was away in Hawaii, his uncle played with a band that became known as The Nightshift. Dickerson joined them upon his return. That group eventually morphed into the original lineup of War with Eric Burdon, with the track "Spill the Wine" launching War's career. Notably, Dickerson was onstage in London in 1970 when Jimi Hendrix joined War for what would end up being his last public performance before he died. Dickerson is survived by his mother, his uncle and his children.
