The song is decent enough if a bit short and I don't love the video (aesthetically, personally, it's kind of trash), BUT I *love* what he is doing and am living for the pearl-clutching that's happening. Power to him.

There were a few bunch of new stations that test spun this yesterday cause the starters list had more than just that one station from yesterday, but still not showing on spincrease or taking off lists on Pop. I'm guessing radio campaign is starting today/tomorrow.

In 2014 Sam Smith identified as gay, now they obviously identify as non-binary.

Is this going to debut at #1?
#1 spotify with 2.2 million (+~300k streams from yesterday), #1 iTunes with a sizeable lead, #7 on Apple music (still climbing) & #1 on youtube with a massive lead (it seems to be increasing each day as well!).

Beaming with tears and pride at the thought that this could debut at number one. This is truly groundbreaking for pop music, if a gay black artist can do this. Unbelievable to see how far we've come.

I am not sure that this kind of extreme approach and getting the number one will necessary mean that society has gone the distance. Actually this video might divide the country even more. Also, Lil Nas X is really brave and bold, but I'd rather prefer more anonymous life. I wish him the safest future, but there are some sick people out there.

No, it doesn't mean the fight for gay liberation is over but...no explicitly gay sexual song or video has ever made this kind of impact before. So while it isn't necessarily the answer, it's a huge deal.

Are we going to act like George Michael, Queen and Elton John didn’t have multiple #1 hits as gay men? I mean I get that “Montreo” is a big deal but let’s not act like he was the first one to do it.

I don't think anyone is acting like that. Or that LNX is doing more for the LGBTQ+ community than any of the names you mentioned or anyone else. But a song on the precipice of a Hot 100 No. 1 debut by a young gay black man with explicitly sexual lyrics and a video featuring him half-naked giving a lap dance to another male character and pole-dancing and in wigs, etc. is ground-breaking. Just like ground was broken by queer musicians dating back to the first half of the 20th century.

George Michael: came out in 1998 & hasn't charted a single song on the Hot 100 after that. Freddie Mercury: never publicly came out, was engaged to a woman until he died, and allegedly identified as bisexual, not gay. Elton John is the only one of these names that publicly came out as bisexual in 1976 and gay in 1988, and continued to have success afterwards. He's a white man from Europe, though. We've had a couple other white gay men succeed. No one is saying Lil Nas X is the first gay man ever. But it's a monumental moment that will have significant impact in the years to come, and should be celebrated. It's not the same as rich white men coming out decades into their successful careers. Obviously those men have opened doors for many, including Lil Nas. But there's no reason for you to downplay his success.

A gay man hitting number one with a song that doesn’t have pronouns (or worse, uses she/her) isnt the same thing as a gay man hitting #1 with a song explicitly about a gay relationship with an even gayer video. Sam Smith’s “I’m Ready” & A Great Big World’s “Hold Each Other” both charted...for a combined 5 weeks iirc. “MONTERO” is a monumental deal tbh, I’m not gonna pretend it isn’t

Just to be clear I’m not discrediting Lil Nas X at all. I’ve liked him from the beginning. I’m so here for how he’s proven he’s not a one hit wonder (in my opinion he already proved that with Panini), but people were still calling him a one-trick pony up until now. I’m glad he is shutting the haters down. No one saw this coming.

It’s been so engrained in our heads that artists like Elton John and George Michael are gay, that you tend to forget how that actually played out in real time.

Elton John tried to cover it up for the longest time, just like his receding hairline.
During all of the Faith singles, George Michael portrayed himself as str8, so no they were not out when these songs hit #1.
