He should have left the discount for next week, but ok, it will be a huge debut.

Beaming with tears and pride at the thought that this could debut at number one. This is truly groundbreaking for pop music, if a gay black artist can do this. Unbelievable to see how far we've come. I am not sure that this kind of extreme approach and getting the number one will necessary mean that society has gone the distance. Actually this video might divide the country even more. Also, Lil Nas X is really brave and bold, but I'd rather prefer more anonymous life. I wish him the safest future, but there are some sick people out there. He's already lived the anonymous life & was miserable by doing so. Not only it's counterproductive for him to backtrack for "his safety," having this mindset is also a way of not truly accepting his identity, expression & preference. Even if he wasn't out nor gay, he'll always be a target simply for being a Black man. No matter how many crazy & sick people there are you cannot live your life in fear for them & suppress your life/dreams.

A gay man hitting number one with a song that doesnβt have pronouns (or worse, uses she/her) isnt the same thing as a gay man hitting #1 with a song explicitly about a gay relationship with an even gayer video. Sam Smithβs βIβm Readyβ & A Great Big Worldβs βHold Each Otherβ both charted...for a combined 5 weeks iirc. βMONTEROβ is a monumental deal tbh, Iβm not gonna pretend it isnβt THANK YOU! This

The post chorus part βCall Me By Your Name/Tell me you love me in privateβ is the best part of the song. Thatβs why I prefer the extended version because that part repeats twice. I wish they would send that version to radio, itβs still only 2:48 so thatβs short enough to be played. I actually think the main version might be too short for radio (but he has was smart for doing it this way for streaming purposes).

It's been picking up steam the past few days. #1 Taking Off at Rhythmic and Top 3 Taking Off at Pop.
He isn't really an established artist yet so radio needed those great streaming numbers and sales as an incentive to play it.

βHolidayβ made top 50 on pop three days after itβs release, so idk. This is already way bigger than that song IMO.

Maybe itβs not being played due to the βcontroversyβ surrounding it?

Lol that would be so lame. Why would radio programmers in New York City, San Francisco, and LA care about some conservatives wetting their pants?
I expect it to take off quickly on its impact date.

Radio is so slow. There is no reason for this to be doing worse than Holiday when that one never had that much hype.

Yea, this is on my playlist on Spotify and haven't paid any attention to it when it's playing in several days. Very interesting to see how this fares in the long run and when they are going to play the remix card.

It's weird because I think this is catchier than most of his singles, period, but maybe its just because seeing 100 different meme videos of it is brainwashing me? lol

I also find this catchier than anything else he's done so far. I have it on repeat tbh. It's grown on me a lot.
I found OTR cute in a meme way but never liked the whole thing and the other three singles he's done never quite clicked with me.

If I remember correctly didnβt Old Town Road kind of under perform on radio? I just remember radio picking it up only after it hit #1 and then they dropped it long before it fell from #1. It had a quick rise and a quick fall. For such an infamous worldwide smash, radio didnβt do it justice in America.
Panini was a moderate radio hit but it didnβt hit the top 10 on any formats. Radio has been his weak link since the beginning, but it hasnβt stopped him.

Radio has been his weak link since the beginning, but it hasnβt stopped him. OTR was dropped about a month before its #1 domination ended, but it lasted the full 20 weeks to recurrence. After it left the top 10, it stabilized in the mid-teens, which is pretty solid. βPaniniβ hit #1 on rhythmic and #6 on Top 40 (where it had a notably extended run).

Do you know what this whole situation reminds me of? 10 years ago when Gaga dropped "Judas" and its controversial religious video right before Easter.

I think radio did not play OTR because he is gay and black and the song was half country half rap, MONTERO will not be played by radio according to it's popularity, because he is gay and black and everything else what conservatively liberal American middle of the road half racist and LBTG denying radio won't touch. Lil Nas X is taking his risks and it is working, American radio will never take that kind of risks, because it will start losing money and it is only about money. Lil Nas X is too weird for meaningless American radio.

because it will start losing money and it is only about money Well, I mean, yeah? If a radio station (anywhere, not just the US) isn't making money, they go under and cease to exist. It costs money to run a radio station.

I simultaneously donβt care for the song or video AND absolutely love it. Iβm so happy this happened and is turning into a success. The TikTok memes are hilarious too. Go Lil Nas X!

Radio is so slow. There is no reason for this to be doing worse than Holiday when that one never had that much hype. Maybe they didn't work on radio prior to this being released because it didn't stop them from picking up "Driver's Licence" since day 1 or 2?? Radio is still probably in their old way of thinking and still has to be bribed oh sorry promoted to in order to add something...

Or maybe his label is not promoting it to radio?
It's going to debut at #1 on the Hot 100. Huge streams.
He doesn't need radio.
