Thought this would be a fun poll to do. Choosing some of the most hated covers of the past 5 or so years that just so happened to be hits. Which song missed the point of the original, butchered the original composition, or was straight up awful as it's own song.
Also I'm only looking at the past 5 or so years since covers being hit songs isn't a thing anymore. There's also too many bad covers from the 70s-90s

The "Dancing On My Own" one was so shameful that it hurts. I am gutted the original never had a chance to be a hit but that watered down, weepy dirge style remake broke through.

Not technically a full cover, but this one particularly gets on my nerves for being so lazy and derivative. At least Ritt Momney tries to add his own unique vision to the song, even if the execution leaves a lot to be desired.
Dishonorable mention to the Jonas Blue cover of "Fast Car" for similar reasons - an 'update' to a classic which strips the earnest and passionate delivery of the original for a dated and generic tropical house sound.

I was debating putting on ily but if I did that, I would have to consider every electronic song that's heavily based on a looped sample (and there were a ton of these in the 2010s) to be a cover so I decided against it.
I also did remember the Fast Car cover but I didn't think that was as notorious to warrant being included

All three all pretty pointless, but Ritt Momneyβs cover is abismal is my opinion Corinneβs original is so timeless... it sounds as fresh as ever.

Fast Car was the worst for me. Itβs a song that exists around its lyrics and the cover took everything out of what the song was meant to be. Iβm generally not against covers, and enjoy when an artist can put a new spin on them, but that was an example of what not to do.
I thought the Dancing On My Own cover was dreadful but it wasnβt completely devoid of sentiment. It just didnβt have a fraction of the impact of the original.
While on the topic, I also generally find acoustic pop and folk covers of dance or hip-hop songs obnoxious. If you want to pay tribute to a song you love during a show, plus down the guitar, hold your phone to the mic to play the original version for the audience.

This is such a cursed poll lol.
Put Your Records On is my least favorite hit of 2021 so far and probably won't be topped. The fact that it's getting so much undeserved radioplay (compared to other bigger hits) doesn't help it.
But I STILL have to give it to Dancing On My Own. I'm all for covers having their own sound and putting a different spin on a song, but this just completely missed the entire point and appeal of the original. What are you dancing to Callum?? What club are you at? Where is the gorgeous sonic/lyrical dissonance? Where did it go?!
There's also the fact that while I love the original Put Your Records On, the original Dancing On My Own is one of my favorite songs of all time. The fact that the cover pops up first on both Google and YouTube makes me so sad.

I enjoy the DOMO cover for what it is lol. It gets a lot of undeserved hate because the original is so much better (and iconic). But on it's own it's no worse than the average Sam Smith ballad.

The rock covers are great, particularly Disturbed. I have no opinion on the Callum Scott cover. Tonald Drump's cover is abysmal.

I don't hate any of these really but I'd pick Dancing On My Own because it's the least interesting

Calum Scott, I loathe that cover with a such a fiery passion. And the amount of people that think his version is better or think that his version is the original astounds me (we are doomed as a nation).

I hate how many people have told me they prefer Calum Scottβs version (or even worse, have thought his was the original). I think some people donβt understand that music can be good even if itβs upbeat pop music.
