Ah snap, it might actually be "Everything I See". Right album at least "Take Me To Texas" is our second of George's notable Texas-loving-anthems to leave us! While "Somewhere Down In Texas" has a wistful and reflective tone to it, "Take Me To Texas" is a lot more celebratory and pride-filled. It doesn't have a lot of substance, outside of loving Texas and name-dropping as many cities as it can, but that certainly isn't a knock against it! I always thought this would have made a great single because it's the sort of song that would have been a hit with such a wide range of concert crowds in his home state, while also having a killer melody that appeals to the masses.

There are a small handful of songs in this rankdown that I think are just sooooo much more basic than George's A-list songs, and this is one of them. Like, this is a great song for what it is! It is better-than-average '80s album filler. But more noteworthy in his career than "Take Me To Texas", "Neon Row", "Peace Of Mind", etc? No way in hell. Funny story, LBTrocks is one of the highest rankers for almost every single one of those "too-basic-to-compete-in-this-rankdown" songs that I mentioned

I just never know what to expect with some of these early songs, so given that I'd have to say that "Fifteen Years Going Up (And One Night Coming Down)" exceeded expectations. While at the bottom of my list here, this song and the Right Or Wrong era in general really began to showcase George's vocal capabilities as I think he sounds so, so smooth on this record. Also, every time I see that album cover I just melt lol

The next song is one of our most polarizing songs! So polarizing, in fact, that it features MULTIPLE last place ranks....as well as a top 5 What in a list this big and strong could possible garnish enough hatred to have multiple people think it's the worst?!?!

I find the last-place rankings for "Stars On The Water" to be a bit of a head-scratcher and can only assume it likely has something to do with the (very minimal amount of!) auto-tune used in production by Tony Brown on George's voice. I personally think it works perfectly as it enhances the effect the song is trying to convey.
Anyways, I've always thought that this remains one of the biggest missed single opportunities from George's catalog as I thought for sure it was going to be released as the third or fourth single. Nonetheless, it received a substantial amount of airplay down here in Texas during that time and in fact still gets played to this day. It remained a staple in George's set for years up until recently I think.

The Road Less Traveled is without a doubt one of George's most important eras! Of course that was arguably the peak of his career, with "Living And Living Well", "She'll Leave You With A Smile", and "Run" all going down as some of the biggest hits of his entire career, and that famous final concert in the Astrodome taking place around the same time. But in addition to all the blatant success he was having at the time, it was also just a damn good album! I consider "Stars on the Water" to be one of his most noteworthy album tracks, largely because of the context of the wave of popularity he was riding at the time. He even performed it in that Astrodome concert (it's not on the cd or DVD, but it is available as a digital download!), so it was definitely a song that was popular upon release! This song is also pretty experimental, and that makes it a lot more polarizing than it otherwise would have been. I know for a fact that the autotune was the reason it was castleoblivion26's last place. Personally, I think it gives the song a lot of character and personality. But I get it. I figured it would do a lot better here because of how popular this album feels in relation to George's career, but that was not to be!

It was actually the first song he started off with that night (I should know as I was there lol). However, they changed that up for the CD release as "Write This Down" was used first in lieu of that.

Also, I still remain a bit bitter/puzzled that they passed up on releasing "Stars On the Water" and instead skipped to the next era after only three singles and then dropped "Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa"

I also wanted to say that George has a handful of songs from the second half of his career that I just can't help but love because of how "dark" they sound. Not topically-dark like "Fancy", but just dark in the sense that it sounds best at night. The Road Less Traveled is one of the albums that embodies that feeling the best for me, with It Just Comes Natural also coming close.
Even "Stars on the Water" feels like a night song to me, despite being a pretty straightforward peppy country jam! There's just something about the way it's produced that makes it feel just as perfect for a night drive as stuff like "The Road Less Traveled", "Run", etc...

It may be pointless to speculate, but I think "Cowboys Like Us" probably would have been a #1 single if they'd skipped "Tulsa" altogether and opted for "Stars", and then started the next era directly with "Cowboys"...

Like quite a few of the songs from Pure Country, "Baby Your Baby" has always kind of felt like it was a single as it received a notable placement at the beginning of the movie (and not to sound like a broken record, but you'll still hear this on the radio from time to time down here in Texas). This has all the earmarks of the neo-traditional sound that was popular in the early 90s which in turn does come across as somewhat dated by todays standards. That said, I do think this would've made for a better choice as the albums third single over "When Did You Stop Loving Me" as it likely would've easily been a top 2 hit.

"Baby Your Baby" is our second least-polarizing song, which means it has the distinct dishonor of finishing lower than anybody ranked it, LMAO! Sad! The production of this song has aged a little harder than the rest of the Pure Country album imo, but it's still a great song. I find the phrasing to be really catchy. "Baby Your Baby" isn't some brilliant lyrical hook like George is so often known for, but it still just works, and I have always had a special place for this song and have thought it would make a great single. Certainly shouldn't have been a single over "Where The Sidewalk Ends" or anything, but I think it would have been only 2nd or 3rd in line if I was making the choices. Edit: Lmao tim I feel like we both said the same thing! We have similar insights with this one!

That entire Honkytonkville era was mismanaged, especially given that they chose to lead with "Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa" which kinda took the wind out the sails from his previous era. And not just that, but they released that song leading up to summer! But yea, "Cowboys Like Us" would've made for a much better choice as that albums lead single likely followed by "As Far As It Goes" with "Honk If You Honky Tonk" being my choice for the third single.

Just based on how huge the hits were at the time, plus how much buzz some of those songs had at the time. It might have needed to be a 54 #1s album that came next though

I think it's very likely that MCA let George choose the third single from Pure Country and he opted to go with "When Did You Stop Loving Me". I'm sure they would've selected a different option, but they also probably knew they weren't going four singles deep with the project. This rankdown actually kind of got me thinking what George's contract was/is with MCA and what role (if any) he has in selecting singles. I'd wager that the label chooses the first two and then thereafter George provides a couple songs he'd like to have released and they go from there. That might explain such releases as "Overnight Success", "Lovesick Blues", "When Did You Stop Loving Me", "Lovebug", "Lead On", "King of the Mountain" "We Really Shouldn't Be Doing This", "The Breath You Take", etc. I'd bet a good chunk of those were hand-picked by him.

"4 Minus 3 Equals Zero" is one of those aforementioned killer hooks Like honestly, why is it so hard for songwriters to come up with something even half this clever anymore?? "Four minus three equals zeeeeero, 'cause I'll be nothing without your love" :'( Not to mention George sounds fabulous on this one as well.

"Oh Me, Oh My Sweet Baby" has long remained one of the few album tracks I tend to skip over if only because I happen to me more familiar with Diamond Rio's version. That said, I've slowly started to come around to it a bit more after revisiting it ad nauseam for these rankdowns . However, I do still remain partial to Diamond Rio's version which was a top 5 hit for them in early '93:
