Oh, we're continuing on lol?! I never expected "I Can't See Texas From Here" to be a top 10 contender, so it did about as well as I thought (and is also the only song solely written by George from this era!). Btw, this is still played quite regularly on country radio down here in Texas...but of course right?!

"I Can't See Texas From Here" has always been my least favorite song on George's second album, because there is just something about the production that makes it sound really hokey, which does it no favors against an album that is otherwise just about perfect. That being said, I have realized through this album series that this is a bit of a fan favorite, so I have gained a bit more of an appreciation for it. I'm still happy to see it miss the top 10 though, and especially happy to see "Honkytonk Crazy" reigning as the highest album track from this album, as should have happened in the album rankdown to begin with!
Edit: Wait, I forgot that "Lover In Disguise" was still in this too. Lol I did my math wrong!! Still, they both deserve to still be in over "Texas", so all is well.

Now that's more like it. This is a solid album track, but honestly it's one that should've left a bit sooner. It certainly can't hold a candle to "Her Goodbye Hit Me in the Heart".
I will say though, every time I revisit the Right or Wrong album and hear this I'm reminded of how much I enjoy it. But even then, I still never feel compelled to seek it out on its own.

This definitely ended up being a much stronger contender than I anticipated. It started out right about where I expected it to finish, but ended up gradually climbing for pretty much the entire submission process before Cody Wants Out... came along at the last minute and gave this song the "Her Goodbye Hit Me In The Heart" treatment. In that case that was actually warranted though, because there is no way this should have been a top 10 contender out of this decade, lmao. It's a solid song, but not top 10 material. Still, its presence in this top 15 isn't nearly as much of a head scratcher as that of "Every Time It Rains" from the same album

Talk about exceeding expectations! While I don't necessarily like it as much as I did back in my youth, I'm kinda sorta not surprised because "Every Time It Rains (Lord Don't It Pour)" was one of my favorite album tracks as a kid back when I was first discovering George and his albums. That said, I never expected it to do quite this well!

I was shocked at how well this song ended up doing! "Every Time It Rains" is a cute song I guess, but I have always felt like it was in a register that doesn't feel natural for George's voice. It is also severely underwritten compared to something like Luke Combs' "When It Rains It Pours", which is a modern version of this theme that tackles it significantly more thoroughly imo.

There is something so uniquely dark and mysterious about "Lover In Disguise", I have always been really drawn to it. I feel like I may have underranked it here, because I am actually really excited to see it do so well! NOW I can correctly say that "Honkytonk Crazy" is the highest song from Strait From The Heart, as it deserves

I'm pleasantly surprised by the performance of "Lover In Disguise"! That said, I have to admit that this was in fact one of the harder album tracks to rank personally because I felt like I just as easily could've ranked it higher than I did (which was still in the top 20!). This is yet another reason why his second album remains so iconic.

Our final song to miss the top 10 was a consistent top 5 contender for awhile, and another constant top 10 contender that only missed out thanks to the last handful of lists

Yea...this '80s era for George is a hot mess. "Blame It On Mexico" has no business being left out of the top 10

It's really weird to me that Strait Country is the second album to be completely eliminated, because overall I feel like that album has done pretty well in this rankdown! It's definitely done better than Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind, for example, which lost nearly all its songs in the bottom 10 and has since been kept alive by "I Should Have Watched That First Step". Plus "Her Goodbye Hit Me In The Heart" and "Blame It On Mexico" were both such strong top 10 contenders that it was honestly a huge shock seeing them both miss out at the last minute! I have always thought "Blame It On Mexico" sounded a bit like Kenny Chesney, so that honestly explains .indulgecountry's rank This is a jam though! It'll be interesting to watch in the finale.

We've had much better songs dip out far shy of a top 10 finish than this dusty Mexico song. Sry not sry.

The fact that Her Goodbye Hit Me In The Heart and Blame It On Mexico were never singles is crazy. Strait Country is a loaded album.

Either one of those would've made for a much better single than "Down and Out". George is on record saying he never liked it anyways and even excluded it from the Strait Out of the Box compilation.

Sorry I didn't dive into the top 10 today! After spending literally all day Saturday on Pulse, I ended up needing to actually get real-life things done on Sunday 😂 I was able to get October New Releases launched at least. I'll try to finish this up tomorrow!

We kick off our top 10 with one of the THREE songs from Beyond The Blue Neon that managed to last this long! George's final album of the '80s proved to be quite a force here. It's true that "Oh Me, Oh My Sweet Baby" was not a top 10 contender, and was one of the songs that got lucky to sneak this high thanks to "Her Goodbye Hit Me In The Heart" and "Blame It On Mexico" being tanked out at the last minute. It was not a slouch by any means though, as it was a solid top 20 contender for then majority of the rankdown and was creeping higher and higher towards the top 10 the closer we got towards the end. I think this one is really catchy and fun! tim has never liked this one, but not everybody's perfect! Nobody else put this in their bottom 15.

I think I might just be partial to Diamond Rio's version as that is the one I more or less grew up with hearing first before I ever knew George covered it. That said, this song has always kinda stood out on that album like it just didn't quite belong for some reason. Not sure why, but that's how I've always felt about it. Anyways, I'm glad this is the first song out in the top 10!

"I Should Have Watched That First Step" was the lone holdout from George's 4th album. And deservedly so! I'm not sure if I expected this to be a top 10 contender, but I am not at all upset about it, because this one is a catchy breath of fresh air that I always really enjoy when it comes on! The chorus is so catchy!

"I Should Have Watched That First Step" certainly has a catchy chorus, but in no way was this on my radar as a possible top 10 contender nor one that would be so well-received for that matter. Again, I assume for the majority here that the rankings were more or less a first (or second) impression, whereas I have listened to these songs ad nauseam since my youth .
