Brandi Carlile coming out with the last-day-of-eligibility release, sitting at an 87 on Metacritic rn… She’s one to watch.
I think she has a great chance to be nominated for “Right on Time” in SotY and RotY, but I read that the album won't be eligible cause she doesn’t have any format of the album dropping before the deadline, only digital (and apparently, you need that in order to become eligible).
this is incorrect. I believe this used to be the rule at some point, but currently any music that's available in the United States (via record stores, retailers and/or streaming platforms) is eligible. from the GRAMMY rulebook, page 9: if this past Friday's releases aren't eligible, the main reason will be that they were released after the eligibility period ended. but perhaps they can go by west coast time and allow October 1 releases to be considered (since they dropped at 9pm on Thursday here). guess we'll find out sooner or later.

The cassette of Love for Sale was released on 9/30 to meet the deadline so I don't think the 10/1 releases will count if some version of it wasn't made available prior to.
Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Bo Burnham ends up in AOTY lol (and if any R&B releases deserve to be there, it's HEAUX TALES).

Tony Bennett winning Album of the Year in the early 1990s is one of the main things that led to the creation of the panels for the general categories, so it would be funny if the year they do away with them he gets back in Album of the Year.

Anthony has 1 win out of 12 nominations and it was thanks to Al Green lol but I guess anything can happen.

This was a very strange decision for The Grammys to make, I’m curious to know why they decided to put the Hall of Fame and the Special Merit Awards on hiatus.

Yes, very strange. Do those things even involve a ceremony to where they'd be avoiding Covid?

The article I posted on the last page suggested it was getting delayed because last year’s recipients weren’t properly recognized.

Yeah, COVID itself isn't the issue when concerts are happening and NFL games with far less testing and protocols than what a Grammy event would have.

There goes her Grammy chances this season
In my mind, the award this year was always Stapleton's to lose, and now even more with Kacey out.
As I've mentioned at the Grammy thread, even with its great numbers and solid reviews, I had a feeling that "Star-crossed" existing in such a gray area genre-wise could potentially alienate some of the country voting block/committee.
They don't mention where the album will be eligible at, but don't think this album is pop enough to gain enough traction within pop voters to get her nominations.

I really hope Ari can get some nominations with her album, in the long run it really proved itself as a great body of work I second this. While I don't think the album itself is AOTY-worthy (even for BPVA, given the heavy competition), she definitely deserves some nominations for the era. While the title track would be a worthy nominee for Best Pop Solo, I would also love to see her getting some love on the R&B categories for the deep cuts à la Lizzo and Mariah Carey. "pov", "my hair", "nasty", and "safety net" should definitely be submitted for Best R&B Performance or Best Traditional R&B Performance (for the former two), and having any of them being nominated would be wonderful to see. ("off the table" is sublime too and a worthy contender for BTR&BP and Best R&B Song, but I'm not sure if Ariana is allowed to submit it given The Weeknd's boycott)

The album should go where it was submitted. Kasey has not historically been marketed as a pop artist. Awful

Has there ever been a Grammy ceremony without messy controversies? And that's not even considering the aftermath with the eventual wins and snubs. Anyway, I'm more baffled by Bo Burnham being deemed ineligible for Comedy, since from my perspective it seems his album had all necessary elements to qualify, and when the usual nominees tend to be audio from stand-up specials and the likes of Weird Al and The Lonely Island, he wouldn't feel out-of-place at all. Also, not a good look for the academy to have the likely frontrunner being Dave Chapelle given the controversy surrounding his latest project. Not like they care, though, as we've been shown time and time again...
As for Kacey, I haven't listened to the album yet to judge, but I remember it was being marketed as her shift to a pop sound, but at the same time, this is what she says of her status as a country musician (from an interview with NME) - " I feel like I don't belong to country in any way on one hand, but on the other hand, I'm deeply rooted in that genre. So I'm not owned by it." Ultimately, her case seems to be more rooted on how the academy views genre-bending records and how strict conventions associated with each genre have been affecting artists who are willing to go outside these limitations and play with more than one style of music. It happened with "After Hours" last year (should it go to pop or contemporary R&B?), happened with "Hollywood's Bleeding" (pop, hip hop, or rock?), and I wouldn't be surprised if Doja Cat and Lil Nas X's albums also suffer a similar issue. Of course, I imagine this must be particularly frustrating for Kacey and her team since Best Pop Vocal Album is highly competitive this year, and she would have a much better shot at being nominated (and possibly winning) in the country categories. Regardless, I still think this publicity will be positive for both her and Burnham to attract attention from voters on the General Field.

maybe it's time to discuss contemporary country category like RnB have.

^ That's a great suggestion. The current country category would be renamed Traditional Country while a new Contemporary Country category would be created to adjust to projects that go beyond the traditional conventions of the genre and/or play around different sonic influences while still retaining the essence of country music, and that would be more applicable to "star-crossed".

Tbh this makes sense to me, too. That special is not primarily comedy.

True, though hasn't one or more of the Americana/Folk categories essentially become the traditional country category?

It's funny to see this disconnect in the industry between what the chart gatekeepers allow vs. the awards gatekeepers. #1 Country and Comedy Albums are also not country nor comedy? Fascinating.

I mean Kacey was always going to have a hard time following her massive Grammy success with GH, but that's just very shitty of them. The Pop field isn't gonna embrace her.

The design for the #GiveCredit #BehindTheScenea campaign led by the Recording Academy is so awful! The stretched letters with compact letters and regular letters, multiple font sizes, it’s terrible! Not cute at all. I can’t believe we’ll be seeing these for the rest of the year. Last year’s was so pretty. http://instagram.com/p/CVGXinLs8eV

It looks like they used Grammys (Taylor's Version) for the design team...

It's kind of hilarious that the first image on that post is Billie Eilish's album, where FINNEAS pops up about 19 times lol. He is more visible than the other "behind the scenes" people, so it makes little sense to begin the campaign with him.
