"Many a Long and Lonesome Highway" was released in September 1989 as the first single from Crowell's album Keys to the Highway. While it reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, it was a number one hit on the RPM Country Tracks chart in Canada. Despite starting out in the bottom 20, this managed to leap into the top 45 thanks to a near top 50 from myself followed by a top 10 from Kanenrá:ke. This is his first top 10 loss and second in the top 20. It ended up slipping back into the bottom 30 though before sliding even further and landing at its lowest peaking position of its run. Both ccarter1023 and someguy are the only other two participants to lose a top 50. Three others lose a bottom 10 including a bottom 2 ranking from .indulgecountry. Rodney Crowell is rather underappreciated artist here on Pulse which likely stems from the fact that most of his success came during the mid to late 1980s. Much of my early introduction to him came through CMT which I'd say certainly had a great influence on me at a young age. More than that, though, is that it was also very much a history lesson of the genre itself of which I'm greatly thankful for.

"Stranger Things Have Happened" is a song written by Roger Murrah and Keith Stegall and was released by Ronnie Milsap in February 1990 as the fourth single and title track from the album Stranger Things Have Happened. The song reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. While this was able to pick up a bit of support including three top 40s and a top 30 from 🌺CountryLineDancer, it mostly remained within the bottom 20 as it was bogged down by four bottom 10 rankings and two more bottom 20s. My bottom 10 ranking for this seems a bit harsh I think especially given the fact that I consider myself to be a fan of most of Ronnie's songs. I just have a hard time getting into this one and it certainly isn't one that I would want to revisit much from his discography. I'm not surprised though that there were some amongst the group who enjoyed this one more than I do.

Hm, I might have overranked this a bit, but it's a solid song. A bit slow, but lyrics are nice + great production. His other song had better stay longer though!

Our next song exiting is one that I personally selected to include as it has great importance to me as a young boy. Given the wide range of rankings for this, you'd think it would've come in as a bit more polarizing. That said, five participants lose a bottom 20 while only one loses a top 30.

The song "Honky Tonk Blues" really needs no introduction as it was of course first recorded by Hank Williams in 1952. The group Pirates of the Mississippi released this as the lead single to their self-titled debut album in the summer of 1990 where it became their first top 30 hit. This was initially predicted to be last place contender by Cody Wants Out... and all in all I think this ended up performing about as well as I thought it might. I was hoping it might escape the bottom 20, but alas that was probably a bit too much to ask for. Much to my surprise though is that not only did this pick up a top 30 from LBTrocks, but it also only picked up one bottom 10 from taylor. It managed to just skirt outside of the bottom 10 in the middle of its run before being able to move up a few spots towards the end (which again is mostly thanks to LBTrocks as well as a near top 30 from gardyfan). I mentioned before the reveal that I personally selected to include this song as the group Pirates of the Mississippi has some sentimental value to me. Believe it or not, they were the first concert I ever attended as my mom took me to see them at our local county fair in Nebraska back in the summer of 1991. I only have snapshots of that memory now, but it's a memory that has always meant a lot to me and is one that I'll always hold a special place in my heart for. I still revisit this album from time to time and still enjoy it just as much as I did when I was young. This may be the last time you hear of them in this rankdown, but we'll be revisiting another one of their hits "Feed Jake" in a future year-end rankdown for the year 1991.

A lot of these songs were just very average. Like, "Honky Tonk Blues" for example, I liked it well enough to put it at #66, so I'd certainly never skip it, but there also isn't anything particularly memorable about it to me. That's the way most of these songs in the bottom 15 16 have been. I did like "Stranger Things Have Happened" quite a bit. This is significantly better than George Strait's song of the same title. Yes, I went there I was surprised how weak Waylon and Conway's contributions were this year! I know they're iconic enough that they would both probably be among the highest performers in most of their peak years. Unfortunately most artists slip in quality near the end of their careers, and apparently that's what we've witnessed here, lol. These Ricky Van Shelton songs got a raw deal!! I found his voice to be pretty smooth and soothing. Definitely would have rather seen at least "Statue of a Fool" last until like the middle of the pack. And I wasn't as big of a fan of "I Meant Every Word He Said", but I did kinda figure it would be a song that I ranked lower than everybody else... Guess everyone else did the same thing I did! Marty Stuart's contributions this year were baaaaaaad. I guess the songs themselves weren't outright horrible, but his production was noticeably inferior in quality to anything else in this list to me. His songs sounded completely lifeless. They wouldn't be objectively bad if they were given an enhanced spruced-up re-release or something, but these original versions left me completely underwhelmed. Don Williams did NOT deserve this tank job!!!! He has such a soothing voice! Also, I feel like "It's You Again" probably suffers from being the one song on this playlist that is not available on streaming services (since I have Garth's early albums). It took me so long to get this rankdown finished up that this is a song I had to listen to several times over the span of several different weeks, lmao. I found it to be really catchy though!!!! Admittedly I did always forget how it went in between listens until about the 5th or 6th listen, so I could understand people finding it unmemorable. I put it on and jam though :)

Sorry for the contributions with ccarter1023 and castleoblivion26, but my ranking for "If You Could Only See Me Now" is also incorrect, but my actual rank wasn't that far off (#79). EDIT: Come to think if it, I believe the posted ranks for "If You Could Only See Me Now" were the ranks from "I Could Be Persuaded".

"Sooner or Later" was first recorded by The Forester Sisters for their 1987 album You Again. In 1989, Eddy Raven recored and released it in December 1989 as the third single from his album Temporary Sanity. The song reached #6 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. This got off to a great start thanks to a top 25 ranking from CoJoFan (I feel like I'm starting to sound like a broken record now though lol) before it began a slow decent down into the bottom 20. This was only able to muster up two additional top 50 rankings with the rest of the group placing this a bit further down on their lists. That includes four bottom 10 rankings of which Cody Wants Out... placed in his bottom 3. I'm sure to most some would say this song is just a bit average and maybe sounds a bit dated, and while I would probably agree for the most part I still think this song kind of slays! It was definitely one of the lighter songs here and was great to revisit.

"I Can't Turn the Tide" was released by Baillie & the Boys in November 1989 as the fourth single from the album Turn the Tide. The song reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. This time around CoJoFan started us off with a song in its lowest charting position of its run as he placed this down in his bottom 2. It mostly remained down inside the bottom 10 for its entire run as it would pick up two additional bottom 10 rankings, two bottom 20 rankings, and three more in the bottom 30. It manage to pick up a of support in the top half as both kw9461 and .indulgecountry put this in their top 50. It was the final two lists though that allowed this to move up as bboat11 placed this just outside of his top 30 followed by a near top 10 from taylor.

Holdin' a Good Hand" was released by Lee Greenwood in June 1990 as the first single and title track from the album Holdin' a Good Hand. The song reached number 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. It's like yin and yang as CoJoFan now starts us off with the songs highest position of the rankdown as he placed this inside his top 25. It quickly fell back outside of the top half as I came in with its first of two bottom 10 rankings. From there it hovered in and around the top 70 before again inching a bit closer to the top 50 as it picked up its one and only top 10 ranking from 🌺CountryLineDancer. It began to slowly settle back as more lists came in though and for the first time found itself in the bottom 30. In a reversal from our previous song, the final two lists pushed this one back into the bottom 20 as a second bottom 10 ranking from bboat11 came along which was then followed up by a fourth bottom 20 ranking from taylor.
