“Tainted Love” is a song that is sampled by Rihanna on “SOS” and it’s also a song that contains a sample, “Where Did Our Love Go” by the Supremes.
How many instances do we have similar to this, where songs contain multiple samples or are sampled multiple times?
I’m not sure I’m saying this correctly. I feel like the title is a little confusing.

This happens almost constantly in hip-hop and r&b - although the number of times it happens with every song involved being a hit is likely quite a bit smaller. Examples I can think of off the top of my head:
- Ashanti's "Foolish" and Usher's "U Don't Have To Call" both sample Biggie's "One More Chance/Stay With Me (remix)," which in turn samples DeBarge's "Stay With Me."
- "Psycho" by Post Malone samples "It Was a Good Day" by Ice Cube, which itself contains two samples - "Footsteps In The Dark" by the Isley Brothers and "Sexy Mama" by The Moments.
- "Sukiyaki" by A Taste of Honey" and "The Magic Mirror" from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs were sampled in "La Di Da Di" by Doug E. Fresh and SLick Rick. "La Di Da Di" has since been sampled by over 1,000 songs, including Beyonce's "Party," Biggie's "Hypnotize," Miley Cyrus' "We Can't Stop," Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up," and Naughty By Nature's "O.P.P." "O.P.P" was sampled in several songs including "Jump" by Kriss Kross and "Go Crazy" by Megan Thee Stallion.
- Jessie Ware went full-on Inception by doing a cover of Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love" on her first album and then throwing in brief samples of "Boy You Knock Me Out" by Tatyana Ali and "Age Ain't Nothing But a Number" by Aaliyah, both songs of which sample the Bobby Caldwell original. And that's without mentioning that BYKMO samples "Outstanding" by the Gap Band, "Summer Madness" by Kool & The Gang, and "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince (the latter of which itself samples "Summer Madness" and "Funky President (People It's Bad)" by James Brown)...yeah, this example is a lot for a cover that I just remembered wasn't even on the standard edition of Jessie's album lol.

- Ariana Grande's "Break Your Heart Right Back" samples "Mo Money Mo Problems" by The Notorious B.I.G. - the precise section that contains a sample of Diana Ross' "I'm Coming Out".
- Perhaps my favorite example of this trope - Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music" prominently features a sample from Michael Jackson's "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'", whose iconic outro was sampled from Manu Dibango's "Soul Makossa".

There are countless examples, but it's become increasingly common over the past several years as rap and R&B acts sample songs from the 90s and early 00s that themselves sampled 60s/70s/80s songs.

Cole used it for "Dance (A$$)"

So here’s my question on that. Rihanna’s song specifically samples the part in “Wanna Be Starting Something” that samples “Soul Makossa.” So why is it considered An MJ sample and not a sample of “Soul Makossa?”

Okay. So. "Doin' Time" by Lana Del Rey is a cover/interpolation of "Doin' Time" by Sublime, which samples Herbie Mann's cover of "Summertime" by George Gershwin. So it's a cover of a song which samples a cover.
