unfortunate that this era has been overshadowed by her deathly sappy late 80s collaborations EXTRA

I realized I missed this one last night. 71. Still in the Game - Steve WinwoodGood slot for it. Ironically no longer in the game. Felt like he was shooting for "While You See A Chance" part 2, but misses on the charm that song had. Its still a pretty melodic number just not strong enough for my list. I like this one a lot more than half the songs we raked in the late 80's. 70. Play the Game Tonight - KansasI love this song, but a lot more better for Pop. You can listen to a huge difference between that Southern Rock style of "Carry On Wayward Son" and this Easy Listening Ambrosia vibe, but it does sound extra epic in the chorus. A chorus that could go on forever as far as I'm concerned. 69. Nowhere to Run - SantanaI really didn't like this at all. The trick with Santana is the vocalists of his song + you also had to think Santana was beyond awesome on guitar. He was alright. If I liked a song of his it would be because of the vocalist. The vocalist on this album was Alex Ligertwood and the name draws a complete blank. He also sings" Winning" and "Hold On". Neither of which blew me away. I would have rather ranked a song off The Warriors soundtrack with the same "No Where To Run" title. That's a jam. 68. Burning Down One Side - Robert PlantBest offering from him this year. Really a good song, and the most entertained I felt outside of Led Zeppelin. he really sounded top notch on this song and it felt the most Zeppelin. I prefer the songs he had in "Manic Nirvana". Also The Honeydrippers stuff. 67. When It's Over - LoverboyThis is Loverboy at there best. You either love them (me) or hate them. There is no in between. That amped up sound they added to the guitar strums sound amazing. Really gives the song an extra boost. 66. Where Have All the Good Times Gone! - Van Halen Great position for this Van Halen song. Guitar hook and Diamond Dave on vocals are the highlights. The guitars sound amazing but they also do on "Running With The Devil", and "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love". let's Unchain Van Halen soon 65. Waiting on a Friend - The Rolling StonesGreat slot for this jam. Glad to see I wasn't the only one who upgraded a good Rolling Stones song. This one had a bit of that 60's feel to it. A mellow vibe , but not corny. What was this vibe like Latin style. idk but it gelled nice with my mellow side. Charted this one too. 64. Let's Get It Up - AC/DC Love me some AC/DC lyrics. I charted both their entries pretty close to another, but I thought this woke up my biker metal vibe a bit more. The only thing missing was the explosions. 63. Still in Saigon - The Charlie Daniels BandThere are still about three songs in the running that I just cannot understand why anyone would want them around any longer?. This is one of them. Never cared for this. Actually there is only one song in their whole discography I love. All this talk about his political views. Truthfully I have no idea what they are, but what does it matter when we are ranking the songs? Just my thoughts? 62. Mission of Mercy - The MotelsEvery station seemed to play at least one other song off that album. This was alright. This is one of those examples where I rank the more rock sounding song of theirs lower, because of my love for the other song. On paper it looks weird, but it makes sense in my heart. This is probably why most people do it too I guess? 61. Fight the Good Fight - Triumph Clearly the better one. One of my favorites from them actually, and I won't lie when I say it gives me Zeppelin vibes in the verses. This one put up a good fight to make my top 40, but just couldn't get it up there. At least I squeezed it into my top half. I commend razorshark for putting the song he loves at #1. I once did this with Van Halen "Tattoo". That didn't work out so well for me, but it was my true feeling, and that's what counts. 60. Change - John Waite This is what I mean. This is obviously a song that I know and love 1000x more than anyone here. It's an actual favorite that I charted twice. This one came back for round two on that movie with Mathew Modine. Love how it commences with John signing 'People Talking and they are saying that you're leaving. "So Unhappy" Strum strum strum... and the magic continues to that wonderful 80's style fade out. The lyrics are also great. The crushed Hollywood dreams theme reminds me of Poison's "Fallen Angel". Also I probably enjoy John Waite's vocals a whole lot more than anyone else here. If you grew up on KLOS ,and MTV this rocker would be etched in your heart for life. Once KLOS did one of those top 500 memorial day best songs ever flashback. This one came in at #35. True story. Still sits on my cell phone playlist. I also set my expectations low for this song among this crowd so this isn't such a bad rank. 59. Wasted on the Way - Crosby, Stills & NashThank the stars this is out. Even at a young tender age of seven when my musical tastes were taking form. The form that would stay with me until my dying day. Even then I knew this was not anything I could groove to. You just know you know? My hatred goes as far back as this travesty. Man I hated this song fighting to kick . 38 Special's "Caught Up In You" out of the top 10 on HOT 100. I still think this is some music you would hear in the background of some Goldilocks and the three bears fable. Dr. Folk I could never be. 58. Sole Survivor - AsiaNot too too terrible I guess? I would have definitely preferred to rank the extras our host so kindly posted for me to Download/check. This one felt too by the numbers. I love formula geared genres like Hair Metal, but this felt too forced to fall into place. No terrible, but sacrificial at best. Most interesting part is the breakdown. 57. Southern Pacific - Neil Young & Crazy Horseyes cleared that tank before the top 50. "82 rock is definitely my rock groove. One. I feel no love for Neil's vocals. Worst ever? idk, but pretty close when it comes to rock. That's no surprise. Second. This was a first ,and last time listen for me, and third no radio station I ever heard of played this. This must have been some critics choice or something? 56. Electricland - Bad CompanySee that album art with the pencil in his ear? That came to mind while listening to this. 'nuff said. this was a pretty good night for me. Cleared my tank early, and really only lost two songs from my classic rock archives.

Got some more of the KLOS playback. The KLOS top 95 Playback for 198270. Strange Dreams - Frank MarinoI have this song down credited to Greg Fernando. LOL! Who the hell is that? 69. Winds Of Change - Jefferson StarshipI had this song down as "Hang On' because of the chorus, but I corrected that. Great song we should have ranked.
68. You Keep Running Away - .38 Special one of my own top 10 favs of the year67. Crimson And Clover - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts..and another.66. Where Have All The Good Times Gone - Van Halen65. Tainted Love - Soft CellClassic , but this is kinda overdue on our Mainstream Rock RD as well.64. Shadows Of The Night - Pat BenatarMore music I would have rather ranked than those bottom three I tanked.
63. We Got The Beat - Go- Go'sthis New Wave band is excellent for this format.62. Flying High Again - Ozzy Osbourne 61. Nowhere To Run - Santana 60. You Got Lucky - Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers59. 8675-309/Jenny - Tommy Tutone 58. Don't You Want Me - Human LeagueOne of the first Synthpop songs KLOS jumped on. Something about this one always sounded great on Rock format.57. Learn How To Live - Billy Squier 56. Should I Stay Or Should I Go - The Clash

"Fight the Good Fight" and "Electricland" were among my favorite first listens here. I wouldn't have minded either song going on a bit further.

I wouldn't say that either of the Genesis songs here are among their best, but they do their job well enough.
I do prefer "Abacab" to this, though.

Again, the Rainbow songs here were better than I expected after I was underwhelmed by their song in '83. This wasn't my favorite of the two, but it's decent.

This song is good, but if there is a song on this planet that is missing a guitar solo more than this one then I haven't heard it.
Could have been boosted like 60 spots if it had one.

Yeah, I would be very, very surprised if he doesn't top this performance in 1981, especially with the one.

The 80's Guitar Hero was one of the few GH games I didn't play back when I was very into guitar video games, so that probably explains why I don't have any sort of nostalgia for this song whatsoever.
Even if I did play it, I doubt I'd like this all that much, anyway. He can do so much better than this.

This song turned way around for me on this rankdown's listen. It started to click what people whose taste is usually close to mine see in this--it's very much early semi-ambient pop, akin to "I'm Not In Love" or "Dream Weaver". I also definitely remembered the singing on the track being worse than what I heard this time around. Still don't like "I Want To Know What Love Is" though congrats aerodynamitedrops 17 from the Hot 100 rankdown 50

Already looking forward to 1981 and being similarly low on the Foreigner songs there, too.

Really speaks to how little I enjoy David Lee Roth that an instrumentally competent cover of a personal rankdown song couldn't crack my top 60 Gains 16 from the Hot 100 rankdown 49

Those are the key words: "Instrumentally competent". This has no business working as well as it does, really, but it does because they don't try doing anything too off the wall with it. They just perform "Pretty Woman", and they do a good job of it.
Now, please let them do better in 1981.
