By far the most loaded of these 5-packs, considering 3 were in my personal rankdowns and I'm also a fan of Someday Someway year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 245 | Europa and the Pirate Twins | Thomas Dolby | Link | 37 | 2 | 48 | 246 | Love My Way | The Psychedelic Furs | Link | 30 | 3 | 46 | 253 | Favourite Shirts (Boy Meets Girl) | Haircut 100 | Link | 50 | 7 | 44 | 264 | Senses Working Overtime | XTC | Link | 38 | 3 | 39 | 266 | Someday, Someway | Marshall Crenshaw | Link | 25 | 1 | 36 |

The song's full lyric is actually "Take the L out of lover and it's over", but it's way funnier to ignore that and imagine they're using the phrase in the 21st century sense as in, "take the loss" year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 213 | Take the L | The Motels | Link | 36 | 4 | 82 | 217 | Talk Talk | Talk Talk | Link | 26 | 4 | 77 | 228 | Flamethrower | J. Nowadays, a song spending forever in the 40-60 range of a rock radio chart isn't too special. But the fact that Mexican Radio did this in the 80s is remarkable year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 172 | Mexican Radio | Wall of Voodoo | Link | 41 | 18 | 141 | 175 | Open Your Eyes | The Lords of the New Church | Link | 27 | 7 | 139 | 179 | What Do All the People Know | The Monroes | Link | 20 | 6 | 131 | 180 | Since You're Gone | The Cars | Link | 24 | 4 | 130 | 198 | I Need You | Paul Carrack | Link | 22 | 4 | 102 |

And now, the last of this category. Do you remember ranking Rock & Hyde? Well, Payolas is that group before they had to change their name. Also, "Atlantic City" would've made my top 10 here. year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 110 | Eyes of a Stranger | Payolas | Link | 22 | 15 | 310 | 118 | Atlantic City | Bruce Springsteen | Link | 10 | 10 | 288 | 124 | Secret Journey | The Police | Link | 29 | 16 | 270 | 126 | Valley Girls | Frank Zappa | Link | 12 | 8 | 260 | 136 | I Want Candy | Bow Wow Wow | Link | 22 | 12 | 230 |

taking on a few EXTRAS. Only ones I think should chart. I love "Don't Talk To Strangers", "Look Of Love" and "I Can't Go For That..", to death on any format but I can't go for them on Mainstream.
Open Arms - Journey Any Journey song, because of Steve Perry's vocals would sound great on hard rock radio. This is an epic Powerballad. Beautifully executed with a killer guitar from Neil. It's a s strong as Warrant's "Heaven" or Areosmith "Angel" and I would have ranked it super high on this list.
Love Is Alright Tonite - Rick Springfield I would have preferred this rocker over "Calling All Girls" to rank. One of my favorites off "Working Class Dog" and I'm glad Rock radio recognized the it's harder guitar vibe. It's fast, aggressive and features Rick at his vocal best. It has a strong guitar intro and ends with the same guitar chords. You even get a nice "fake out" in the mid section only to drive the rest of the song home as Rick belts out the last chorus. You have all seen how high I rank Rick on the lost 80's RDs, so yeah easy top 20 for my Rock lists. Pretty much Me against PULSE part 5.
Whatcha Gonna Do - Chilliwack I've mentioned this one before. It's the only Chiliwack song I recall liking as a kid. I recently discovered a new favorite, but this one is still a great to return to every once in a while. For some reason it feels like hard rock Menudo, but that's just me.
Do You Wanna Touch Me - Joan Jett & the Blackhearts Love it! Love it! Love It!, and yes I do. I could say more, but I'll just thank Green Day for reminding me how great that drum intro is.
Jack and Diane - John Mellencamp had I been around back than I probably would have complained about this one missing the top 100 of a Rock year. I know it has the softer acoustic guitars in the verses, but who are we kidding? This one goes hard on the guitar strums and extra hard on the Drum solo. It even reached #3. So how lame can Billboard be? At least you will get to see on the next KLOS top 1982 playback I plan to post once we get this show on the roll.
Do You Believe in Love - Huey Lewis and the News I'm glad we get to rank one of Huey's finest, but I would have easily ranked this one high as well.
Words - Missing Persons With hard New Wave guitars and Dale's high voltage tones this is great for rock format. I would have ranked this one just as high as I did on Modern rock. No penalties at all. Not for this song. We should have gotten to rank this. Just wait to see where it ends up on KLOS.
Me and the Boys - Dave Edmunds I didn't hear this one all that much in the 80's. Discovered later in the 90's. I like it, but I like his Jeff Lynne produced album better.
She Sheila - The Producers I knew of this one from MTV. Gave it a chart peak of #13. I just love the pop rock sound of it. Like The Babys. ...and of course I thought this was John Waite back then. i would probably be its highest ranker too.
saving the next batch for next week. also. to answer my earlier question of how lame can Billboard be?..
How the F U C K does this list leave out not one, but two Cars jams?
That's how lame Billboard was. 8D

The song's full lyric is actually "Take the L out of lover and it's over", but it's way funnier to ignore that and imagine they're using the phrase in the 21st century sense as in, "take the loss" or if you live in Chicago, take the L (or "el") means to ride the elevated train...that's what this song title brought to mind for me

Tonight I'm going to post the biggest category of pre-reveal extras, spanning 72 songs. These artists/bands already have songs in the rankdown, but also charted more songs on the format that did not make the top 100. You may remember the Britney Spears song "If U Seek Amy". Well, April Wine here proves she wasn't the first person to think of this double entendre. year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 125 | You Keep Runnin Away | .38 Special | Link | 7 | 8 | 267 | 319 | Back on the Track | .38 Special | Link | 56 | 1 | 5 | 147 | Put the Finger on You | AC/DC | Link | 38 | 14 | 202 | 203 | If You See Kay | April Wine | Link | 26 | 3 | 93 | 111 | Wildest Dreams | Asia | Link | 28 | 16 | 308 | 290 | Here Comes the Feeling | Asia | Link | 40 | 1 | 21 | 294 | Time Again | Asia | Link | 43 | 1 | 18 |

1/4 for Billy Squier seems like a pretty low ratio of year-end hits to misses. But as you will see, other bands did worse. year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 227 | Racetrack | Bad Company | Link | 39 | 7 | 71 | 201 | A Room of Our Own | Billy Joel | Link | 27 | 5 | 94 | 274 | Scandinavian Skies | Billy Joel | Link | 38 | 2 | 30 | 114 | Learn How to Live | Billy Squier | Link | 15 | 12 | 300 | 146 | Emotions in Motion | Billy Squier | Link | 20 | 7 | 203 | 296 | Keep Me Satisfied | Billy Squier | Link | 46 | 1 | 15 |

"You Might Recall" peaked at #40 on the Hot 100, meaning every commercial single from the Abacab/3x3 era reached the top 40 in America. Genesis would accomplish this 2 more times--with the albums Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance. year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 325 | No Control | Eddie Money | Link | 60 | 1 | 1 | 258 | Straight Back | Fleetwood Mac | Link | 36 | 2 | 41 | 137 | Man on the Corner | Genesis | Link | 14 | 8 | 228 | 226 | You Might Recall | Genesis | Link | 40 | 7 | 73 | 251 | Don't Give Up | Glenn Frey | Link | 25 | 2 | 44 | 315 | I Found Somebody | Glenn Frey | Link | 57 | 2 | 7 |

The lyrics of the album Vinyl Confessions were heavily influenced by Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope converting to Christianity. "Chasing Shadows", in particular, can be read as being about "the frustration in seeking anything outside Biblical truth." year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 214 | Right Away | Kansas | Link | 33 | 6 | 81 | 309 | Chasing Shadows | Kansas | Link | 54 | 2 | 12 | 132 | Take Me to the Top | Loverboy | Link | 23 | 10 | 243 | 169 | Lucky Ones | Loverboy | Link | 36 | 9 | 142 | 316 | Surfer Joe and Moe the Sleaze | Neil Young and Crazy Horse | Link | 56 | 2 | 7 |

If you know that "Over The Mountain" was in my very first personal rankdown, that should tell you I mourn its exclusion from this rankdown even more than that of "Electric Eye". Also, here's Queen going 1/5 in promoting what is commonly viewed as their worst album, Hot Space. year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 176 | Over the Mountain | Ozzy Osbourne | Link | 38 | 8 | 134 | 197 | You Can't Kill Rock & Roll | Ozzy Osbourne | Link | 41 | 13 | 102 | 280 | Kiss of Life | Peter Gabriel | Link | 34 | 1 | 27 | 311 | Hole In Paradise | Prism | Link | 55 | 2 | 11 | 130 | Put Out the Fire | Queen | Link | 15 | 7 | 249 | 170 | Calling All Girls | Queen | Link | 40 | 8 | 142 | 173 | Body Language | Queen | Link | 19 | 7 | 140 | 313 | Life Is Real (Song for Lennon) | Queen | Link | 57 | 2 | 8 |

Electric Eye and those two Ozzy songs would have made this whole list even better than it already is, and I think this list slaps really hard. You Can't Kill Rock & Roll would be my lowest of the three but probably still top 20.

"Can't Live Without You" doesn't feel like the best 2nd single choice for Blackout, but I'll take as much Scorpions as I can get. Can't say the same for Sammy Hagar...I'll take as little of him as I can get. year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 104 | Fast Times at Ridgemont High | Sammy Hagar | Link | 21 | 10 | 328 | 168 | There's Only One Way to Rock | Sammy Hagar | Link | 31 | 6 | 143 | 222 | Baby's on Fire | Sammy Hagar | Link | 35 | 4 | 76 | 300 | Can't Get Loose | Sammy Hagar | Link | 49 | 2 | 15 | 260 | Can't Live Without You | Scorpions | Link | 47 | 4 | 41 |

1982 was good at producing career nadir albums with one classic song. And here's where we end the night. I am not a Van Halen fan by any means, so it should mean a lot coming from me that I'm actually kind of sad "Little Guitars" didn't make the rankdown. From what I've read, it's the fan favorite on Diver Down by a fair distance, and it was one of the playable songs from the album on the video game Guitar Hero: Van Halen. year-end position | Song | Artist | video | Peak | Weeks | chart points | 263 | Say Goodbye | Triumph | Link | 50 | 4 | 39 | 163 | Little Guitars | Van Halen | Link | 33 | 10 | 158 | 190 | Secrets | Van Halen | Link | 22 | 7 | 108 | 250 | The Full Bug | Van Halen | Link | 42 | 3 | 45 |

Dude this one is hard to rank. There is so much fire here that I need oven mitts to type in the songs. I also get sidetracked when I preview the songs. One song can turn into listening to the whole album. I have the bottom 50 in place, but the top 50 are fighting over the slots. I'll get it in on time though.

As good as the 82 Modern Rock rankdown is, the Mainstream Rock is even way better. There have been years where I'm like "eh, the mainstream rock is 50/50". This is NOT that year. There is some sweet ass rock and roll here my friends....

Nobody else is awake most likely, but I am, and I have to post these extras at some point, so why not now? I have 37 more songs to show you, and they all come from artists and bands that charted multiple times this year, but could not make the top 100 at all. Our first set is a pretty significant one. Starting us off are the opening two tracks from Black Sabbath's acclaimed second album with Ronnie James Dio, Mob Ties. Next are a couple more songs from the Nebraska album, joining Atlantic City from earlier.
