What songs that peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 are better known than the #1s that blocked them.
For example, "Beautiful" by Christina Aguilera is one of the most iconic songs of the 2000s, but it was blocked from #1 by "Bump Bump Bump" by B2K, a song almost nobody remembers.

Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" peaked at #2, behind "Windy" by the Association.

Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" peaked at #2, behind "Windy" by the Association. Frankie Valli's song is a better song but Windy is still a well known song.

On the pop airplay chart in the US Rihanna's "Umbrella" was blocked by Justin Timberlake's "Summer Love." A year later Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" was blocked by Jesse McCartney's "Leavin'." On the Hot 100, Psy's "Gangnam Style" was blocked by Maroon 5's "One More Night." Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" peaked at #2, behind "Windy" by the Association. Frankie Valli's song is a better song but Windy is still a well known song. Good thing the thread is talking about #2 songs that are better known compared to the songs that blocked them instead of only known.

I bet if you asked 100 people if they've heard of Windy, I bet you that at least 80 people know the song.

No joke, I’ve never heard of them or at least have no recollection of who that is or the song. And I’m not even trolling. I might find it to see if I at least recognize it because now I’m curious.

The person that made the thread used Bump Bump Bump keeping Beautiful out of #1. Beautiful is way more known than Bump Bump Bump. Can't Take My Eyes off of you is more well known than Windy but not as much as extreme as Beautiful to Bump Bump Bump.

Windy has 9 million streams on Spotify. It's definitely not even half as well known/remembered as CTMEOOY (158 million)
I think it would've been reasonable if they were other way around on chart.

“Hold On To the Nights” by Richard Marx spent one week at #1. Not one of his more well-known songs, probably.
The #2 that week?

While not necessarily forgotten, 50 cent's "Candy Shop" is a product of its time through and through. What did it block from #1? Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" - two beloved pop rock classics.

Another rap song that was a relic of its era was “Jump” by Kris Kross. When people bring it up it’s only as an example of being a dated ‘90s fad. It blocked three songs from hitting #1. One of them, En Vogue’s “My Lovin”, falls right into the same category. The other two? “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Under the Bridge”. Enough said, really.

I've never heard that Windy song before. But En Vogue is a classic r&b group IMO, not a fad, and "My Lovin'" is definitely one of their biggest and most remembered hits (again, IMO and emphasis on r&b). And I think Hold On To The Nights and Pour Some Sugar On Me are probably both on the same level of 'remembered' (which is to say both songs/acts were a [great] product of their time), the issue there is that you're going to get a wildly different answer on that one depending on what a person's musical tastes are.
I think this thread is probably doomed to fall into an argument of semantics and genre bias.

Any song that got blocked by Harlem Shake. All that did was shorten Thrift Shop's reign by 5 weeks.

"Lady Marmalade" blocked "Hanging by a Moment" from hitting #1 even though the latter was a way bigger hit.

I can't remember what song blocked Don't Start now but I know Don't Start now is better then it. Despacito blocked Wild Thoughts. The Box blocked it and I don’t think it’s more well known than it.

That's why I said it was the bigger chart hit. But just because a song was bigger at the time, doesn't mean it's stood the test of time. Hence this thread. But I don't think that the HBAM/LM example fits here. "Lady Marmalade" is a classic of its era. "Hanging By A Moment" is a catchy Alt->HAC radio hit that I don't think has stood up.
