What are some songs that you think perfectly represent the sound of the decade they were released in.
For example I think “Two Princess” by the Spin Doctors and “Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind perfectly represent the sunny and vibrant 90s. For some reason those two songs are very nostalgic to that decade and get referenced/played in movies that take place in that decade. They are both soft rock but I think the reason they stand out is because they bridged the genres together perfectly. The 90s had a lot of alternative and a lot of pop, so these type of songs fit in the middle.

"Yeah!" by Usher, Lil Jon, and Ludacris perfectly encapsulates the peak of the 2000s crunk era.
And if we consider songs that represent the transitional period between decades, "...Baby One More Time" for the rise of teen pop (1998-2001), and "I Gotta Feeling" for the peak club boom vibes (2008-2011).

Most 80s Pop couldn't have been released in any other decade (unless it was an intentional throwback). Don't get me wrong, a ton of it was great, but a lot the songs that haven't stuck around have aged like milk (particularly in the latter half of the decade).

Any Electronic Dance hit with a drop is going to sound unmistakably 2010s.

Any Electronic Dance hit with a drop is going to sound unmistakably 2010s. No. Hey, I never said they were bad. Some of my favorite hits of the decade are EDM songs. I eas just saying that the drop is a feature of 2010s pop music that will be associated with the sound of the decade.

For the 2010s specifically, the 2010s could be broken up into three parts:
Early 2010s: "You Make Me Feel..." by Cobra Starship feat. Sabi (Uptempo beat, quitar riff melody, the style of singing, "put your hands up! put your hands up!" Dance Pop... It's very right in the middle of what an early 2010s pop song is.)
Mid 2010s: "Lean On" by Major Lazer & DJ Snake feat. MØ (Midtempo with drumbeat claps, Tropical House beat, EDM "festival" vocal chops like the ones used in Turn Down For What, Middle, I Took A Pill In Ibiza (seeb remix)... The Mid-2010s was like a bridge to the late 2010s in terms of popular sounds in Pop and Tropical House/Festival Trap specifically. Music slowed in tempo in 2014 but it wasn't until 2016 that Future Bass and Chill Pop would blow up and Trap Rap would blow up even more. Tropical Pop was at it's short peak that was propelled by Justin Bieber's "Sorry" at the end of 2015. Pop also kinda decreased in prevalence in 2016 in favour of Trap Rap and Future Bass.
Late 2010s: "Lucid Dreams" by Juice WRLD (Trap Rap, also represents Emo Rap, Soundcloud Rap, as well as the rise of Gen Z rappers since it's from Juice WRLD... Trap Rap dominated the late 2010s. Emo Rap or "Sad Rap" became a thing in 2018 with the popularity of Juice and X. Pop had an upswing in prominence in 2019 with Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran (especially including the collab with Justin Bieber, which just so happens to have lyrics about anxiety,) Camila Cabello & Shawn Mendez, Lizzo, etc. But even then, Trap Rap remained dominant.
Runner ups:
Early 2010s: "Don't You Worry Child" by Swedish House Mafia (Festival Progressive House/Early 10s EDM) "We Are Young" by Fun (Early 2010s Indie)
Mid 2010s: "Trap Queen" by Fetty Wap (Trap Rap's previous sound, which blew up in the Mid 10s) "Style" by Taylor Swift (80s inspired Pop which still sounded modern)
Late 2010s: "I Like Me Better" by Lauv (Chill Pop, Future Bass inspired Pop (a drop with vocal chops replaces the chorus,) chilled vocal chops used as an instrument in Pop songs, Late 10s pop song guitar melody) "Te Bote" by Ozuna, Bad Bunny, etc. (late 10s Latin Pop/Reggaeton Pop, mostly because of that beat of course, but also because it's chill)
Anyway, those hit songs sound incredibly like the time they came out in, but decade wise, "Closer" by The Chainsmokers feat. Halsey is the quintessential 2010s sound, so it screams 2010s.

Lady Gaga - Born This Way Katy Perry - Teenage Dream Kesha - Tik Tok (technically released late ‘09 but peaked early ‘10) Britney Spears - Till The Word Ends Rihanna - S&M Jennifer Lopez - On The Floor Taio Cruz - Dynamite Enrique Iglesias - I Like It Usher - DJ Got Us Fallin In Love
Basically any songs on the albums of the artists I mentioned above are the epitome of early 2010s sound.

Songs that fit in the most years of their own decade (in terms of their sound in relation to at least one of their respective decade's own sounds)
2000s: How U Remind Me - Nickleback (fits 2002 - 2008)
2010s: Rolling In The Deep - Adele (fits 2011 - 2016(?)) (still thinking. I might have to think about this one a bit more. It comes close if you really think about it.)
