After notching four earlier top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart, rapper Moneybagg Yo earns his first No. 1 as his latest effort, A Gangsta’s Pain, debuts atop the tally. The 22-track set was released on April 23 via CMG/N-Less/Interscope and earned 110,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending April 29, according to MRC Data. Nearly all of that total is powered by streaming activity. The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new May 8, 2021-dated chart (where A Gangsta’s Pain debuts at No. 1) will be posted in full on Billboard's website on May 4. For all chart news, follow billboard and billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram. Of A Gangsta’s Pain’s 110,000 equivalent album units earned in the tracking week ending April 29, SEA units comprise 106,000 (equaling 147.4 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks), album sales comprise 4,000 and TEA units comprise less than 1,000. The set was previewed by the top 20-charting Hot Rap Songs hits “Time Today” and “Hard for the Next,” the latter with Future. Moneybagg Yo first hit the Billboard 200 in 2017 with Heartless, which peaked at No. 177. He’s been prolific on the chart since, as A Gangsta’s Pain is his 11th charting effort, and ninth album to reach the top 25. Pain is his fifth top 10 album overall, and fourth consecutive top 10, following Code Red (No. 6 in 2020, with Blac Youngsta), Time Served (No. 3, 2020) and 43VA Heartless (No. 4, 2019). He got his first top 10 with 2017’s Federal 3X (No. 5). The Slime Language 2 compilation from Young Thug and his Young Stoner Life Records family of artists falls from No. 1 to No. 2 in its second week with 62,000 equivalent album units earned (down 46%). Morgan Wallen’s former No. 1 Dangerous: The Double Album is a non-mover at No. 3 with 54,000 units (down 3%). Eric Church’s Soul debuts at No. 4 with 53,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 42,000 (making it the top-selling album of the week), SEA units comprise 10,000 (equaling 13.3 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks) and TEA units comprise 1,000. Soul follows Church’s top 10 debut with Heart a week ago (at No. 5), making Church the first act with back-to-back top 10 debuts in successive weeks since 2017, when Future debuted at No. 1 on the March 11, 2017-dated chart with his self-titled album and followed it a week later with another No. 1 debut, HNDRXX (March 18). Heart was released on April 16 as the first of three new albums from Church, collectively referred to as Heart & Soul. The & album was released on April 20 exclusive to members of Church’s Church Choir fan club, while the Soul album was released on April 23. (The & album debuts at No. 83 on the new Billboard 200 with 11,000 units -- all from album sales. Heart falls 5-68 with 12,000 units -- down 76%.) Three former No. 1s are next on the Billboard 200. Justin Bieber’s Justice falls 4-5 with 47,000 equivalent album units (down 12%), while Rod Wave’s SoulFly is steady at No. 6 with 40,000 units (down 13%). The Weeknd’s After Hours re-enters at No. 7 with 39,000 units (up 711%). Meanwhile, his best-of compilation The Highlights falls 8-22 with 20,000 units (down 49%). The two albums share a pair of songs, “Blinding Lights” and “Save Your Tears.” On the latest chart, the TEA and SEA units for both songs contribute to After Hours, as a song’s activity is assigned to the artist’s album with the most sales in a week. (After Hours sold 1,500 copies in the latest tracking week, while The Highlights sold 1,000.) A week ago, the TEA and SEA for both songs was directed to The Highlights (which in that frame outsold After Hours). In turn, with the songs’ activity reverting back to After Hours, the album rises re-enters at No. 7. Rounding out the new top 10 are Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia, rising 9-8 with 35,000 equivalent album units earned (down 1%), Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 Fearless (Taylor’s Version), dropping 2-9 with 33,000 units (down 42%), and Pop Smoke’s former leader Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon, a non-mover at No. 10 with nearly 33,000 units (down 3%).

Why does it have to be either/or with the stream assignments? I think a better solution would be to assign the streams proportionally to how much each album sells. Or just strictly assigning the streams to whatever album they were pulled from would be more accurate than what they currently do.

I've spoken about this already in this thread, but the Weeknd will most likely eventually come to regret releasing a greatest hits album so soon in his career. Essentially every project he has released from the start of his career - After Hours has been affected. I doubt projects like Kiss Land, Trilogy, Beauty Behind the Madness and Starboy will ever chart on the Billboard 200 again. I mean, After Hours is just over a year old and just spent 4 straight weeks out of the Billboard 200. Eventually fans and the GP will stop streaming/buying After Hours and just settle for supporting the Highlights instead and that is rather unfortunate. I think anyone else who broke out as a mainstream superstar in the last decade should hold off from releasing a greatest hits album until the end of this decade at the least (this goes especially for artists like Drake, Taylor Swift and Post Malone) who are charting consistently on the Billboard 200 with older albums. An artist like Rihanna could actually use a greatest hits album now because that would give her an extra album charting very high on the Billboard 200 but maybe she should also hold off on doing that. I don't know. For me, there's just something special about seeing an album that's 5+ years still charting steadily on the Billboard 200 on its own merit. That shows genuine interest, especially when you have several albums doing that consistently unlike releasing a greatest hits album with all your biggest hits so people just focus on that instead.

Could it defend the #1 position against DJ Khaled even? Unlikely, unfortunately. Khaled pulls pure and TEA, so even with the album underperforming on streaming, it'll probably get the #1 before the eventual collapse then rebound with the deluxe version.

Soul replaces Church’s Heart, which debuted at No. 1 a week ago, down to No. 9. Soul sold 42,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending April 29, according to MRC Data. It’s Church’s fourth No. 1, following Heart, The Outsiders (in 2014) and Chief (2011). The last act to have back-to-back No. 1 debuts in successive weeks was Future, when his self-titled album debuted at No. 1 on the March 11, 2017-dated chart and was followed a week later with another No. 1 debut, HNDRXX (March 18). Of Soul’s debut sales of 42,000, physical album sales comprise nearly 27,000 of that figure (14,000 CDs and 13,000 vinyl LPs) while digital album sales comprise a little under 15,000. As Soul starts at No. 1, Church’s fan club-exclusive & album bows at No. 3 with 11,000 sold. Not only was it exclusively sold to fan club members, but it was also available only to purchase on vinyl LP. Soul and & also launch at Nos. 1 and 2 on the Vinyl Albums chart. Meanwhile, the Heart album falls from No. 1 to No. 9 on Top Album Sales in its second week with nearly 8,000 sold (down 81%). John Lennon’s 1970 studio album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band bows at No. 4 on Top Album Sales following the set’s lavish reissue and rerelease on April 23. The album sold 10,000 copies (up from a negligible sales figure the previous week) and was reissued in an array of configurations, ranging from a basic single-CD edition to an expansive six-CD/two-Blu-ray boxed set. The latter, which sells for over $100, is bolstered with over 100 new mixes of the album’s songs and additional tracks. All versions of the album are combined for sales tracking and charting purposes. Though this is the first week for John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band on the nearly 30-year-old Top Album Sales chart, the set peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 in January of 1971. The album re-enters the latest Billboard 200 at No. 94, marking its first week on the list since 1981 (having re-entered that January following Lennon’s Dec. 8, 1980, murder). Listen to David Bowie's Unreleased Covers of Emotional John Lennon, Bob Dylan Songs Greta Van Fleet’s The Battle at Garden’s Gate falls 2-5 in its second week on Top Album Sales, with 9,000 sold (down 78%). Dinosaur Jr. claims its highest charting album and first top 10 on Top Album Sales as the band’s new studio set Sweep It Into Space bows at No. 6 (nearly 9,000 sold). The group had previously gone as high as No. 24 with 2016’s Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not. The new album also marks the act’s best sales week since 2012, when I Bet on Sky bowed with 9,000 sold (Oct. 6, 2012-dated chart). The Who Sell Out peaked at No. 48 on the Billboard 200 in 1968, and the album re-enters the newest tally at No. 134 – its first week on the list since 1968. As mentioned above, Church’s Heart falls 1-9 in its second week on Top Album Sales, with nearly 8,000 sold (down 81%). Closing out the new top 10 is Kaleo’s new album Surface Sounds, bowing at No. 10 with a little over 7,000 sold. It’s the rock band’s first top 10 on the list, surpassing the No. 11 peak of A/B in 2016.

I love how Billboard doesn't see anything wrong with rules that had an album with 2 songs top 10 simultaneously failing to chart on Billboard 200 altogether just a few weeks ago.

Things have of course changed now with the streaming era, but it's always a cost-benefit analysis. Sometimes, audiences who grew up with the music, or new generations who wouldn't otherwise buy the originals, would want the biggest hits from each artist on one disc, while the artist's past catalog could still sell well, especially if those albums are highly regarded classics in their own right and contain additional smaller hits/hidden gems, etc. not on the GH compilation. In fact, I'd imagine GH albums often even increased sales of past catalogs, especially for newer audiences, as it would act as an introduction and get people more intrigued and into the artist, wanting more.

iHype- to which album are you referring? After Hours was not charting on Billboard 200 while "Blinding Lights" and "Save Your Tears" were both top 10 on Hot 100 last month. Regardless, the assigning to best-selling rule is a joke. As I have said for awhile now.

In a post-bundle world, the vast majority of #1 albums have good chart runs again finally.
2021 Billboard 200 number ones...

^Allowing bundles to be counted tended to frontload the numbers toward the album's first week, especially regarding pure sales. So at least now some of those are spread over a few more weeks.

85la but that's just my point. I believe there are probably like 4/5 acts in history (with 2 of them being Michael Jackson and the Beatles) who have a greatest hits album charting and at least one other original studio album charting. For most other artists, especially younger artists who are still active, the greatest hits album completely eclipses the original albums which have songs from them added to greatest hits album and that's what's currently happening with the Weeknd. I understand the value of greatest hits albums. I just think he made a wrong move releasing one so early in his career. I've seen many of his fans on social media and across other internet forums who also feel the same way. I doubt After Hours is still charting at all in the next 3/4 months. That'll cause his second-biggest album so far to have less than 100 weeks charted on the Billboard 200. I just feel like he should have saved that move for 10-15 years from now.

iHype- gotcha. I thought so, though I unnecessarily confused myself for some reason. Has any act, on their store site, utilized the "add-on" feature to tickets or merchandise with new albums? I know some acts have announced 2022 tour dates, though not sure if albums are tied to it.
