I got the album early today and it’s yet again another bland album from him
Here’s my rankings
The highlights 1. Bible verses 2. The flow 3. Corn 4. Neon time 5. Now I don’t
The ok 6. Happy anywhere 7. Minimum wage
The blah
The rest of the album
The title track is by far one of his worst tracks

I don’t want to be quick to judge this album after just one listen. All I can say is that this album is not as immediate as previous albums and right now falls into the category of Thomas Rhett and Justin Moore where everything blends together and you can’t really tell most songs apart.

Monday Mornin’ Missing You and Corn were the two standouts from me the first time through.

This is much more uptempo then his past few albums. Bible verses is the really good track that therefore won’t see radio. Monday morning missing you and flow are also enjoyable. Corn is shockingly decent, considering it really is a song about corn.
Based on early sales, body language appears to be popular and I have no idea why

Based on early sales, body language appears to be popular and I have no idea why I don’t know maybe because we rarely get sexy Blake (just like with Sangria). Totally off topic but that beat reminds me of another song that I can’t quite figure out.

Is it normal for him to write 0 of the songs on his album? Just feels like...gone are the days where this is what country artists do.

Yikes, that is a rough debut for someone of Blake's stature. It seems like we've had quite a few underwhelming first weeks lately for country stars who otherwise usually do much better (Thomas Rhett, FGL, Justin Moore).

Album sales are down, and frankly Blake didn't seem that interested in the album process. He basically did promo for a week, and that was it. Plus nothing (from him vs his team) on social media. Luke B still seems interested in putting out albums, and I think the excitement or lack thereof for the process comes through to fans.

Blake intentionally letting his album flop as an excuse for underperforming is an interesting take. Album sales are down, but the drop-off for some of the perennial good-charting country stars is a bit steep for that to be the sole reason (and streaming has been on the rise for country music lately, but that doesn't seem to have off-set the fall for some whereas it has for others). Probably didn't help that "Minimum Wage" was such a dud of a lead-off single. I'm sure he'll be fine though.

I don't think I meant to imply that he intentionally let it flop, I think I said he wasn't that interested in putting out an album, and that came through in the process. He's state dhe's not really into albums multiple times over the past years, and even in the promo for this one. But yeah, the streaming numbers are where it's at, and if you look at the top 10 streaming artists from last year, it's almost exclusively artists who have broken out since ~2015

Well Justin doesn't have it out on CD yet so that probably takes a little away from his sales.

I suspect the physical cd market is exceedingly small It really depends on the artist. Both Carrie Underwood and Alan Jackson are doing strong in physical CDs, according to Billboard's articles.

Probably didn't help that "Minimum Wage" was such a dud of a lead-off single. I'm sure he'll be fine though. To add to the discussion, he kinda did let it flop though. He wasn't hiding that he was releasing this out of obligation. This was at his iHeartCountry album release party: "I was really resisting putting out another album. I was really loving just releasing one single at a time...I was finally able to talk the label out of putting out an album the last time and they put out the greatest hits God's Country record and the two new songs were God's Country and Nobody But You. But then, here we go, we release Happy Anywhere and then Minimum Wage and here comes the label going 'hey man, we're a record label, you have to give us a freaking record to release!'" Blake's been saying the same thing for like 3,4 years now about wanting to release singles he loves every so often without albums attached to them and he mentioned the same thing about not wanting to release an album multiple times throughout the limited promo he did. He's had a lot of success recently with just singles too. Seak05 is right. He stayed off social media pretty much the entirety of the lead up to the release with his team posting about pre order links a few times. He seems adamant about not wanting to release albums anymore but his label makes too much money off of him to actually let him do what he wants. So yeah, he def underperformed but I feel like context matters. Not many people are gonna buy an album they don't even know is coming out or that he's not showing much excitement for. I agree that Minimum Wage was a bad idea to launch the album with. If his label was dead set on releasing this album, they should've just done it after Happy Anywhere which was the actual lead single. Minimum Wage killed any momentum the album might've had. Maybe they'll finally stop forcing him to release albums after this lol.
