I don't see this doing anything on Pop unless a remix is serviced. Andrew Weatherall would have done a killer remix of this if he were still alive. As Lorde found out, this song is not too far off from Primal Scream's Scremadelica. I do really like "Solar Power", but I think it would have been much better if she'd leaned fully into the Madchester sound of the last minute or so. I'm not that well-versed in Alt radio trends today, but I think the restraint in the production made the song more tasteful and, oddly enough, Alt-appropriate to my ears. The last minute is the song's payoff much like Green Light's final minute when the song just sort of loses it. I think Solar Power with a full-on "Madchester sound" production would be sick for an underground dance remix.
Top 10 on AAA: 25 10 LORDE Solar Power 416 235 181 0.917
Lorde still has traction with the Alt charts! You love to see it! Honestly, if we're talking longevity, it's great that she has pull with Alt radio because it's less ageist or sexist when it comes to radio play. A Pop hit would be great, but transitioning to Alt-centric promotion wouldn't be such a bad idea either. Solar Power, yeah!

Was very critical of this from the start, heard yesterday at a beachside grill, it sounded great. Think this will continue to climb until end of summer.

This has surprisingly grown on me, but I still don’t think it’s lead single worthy

I like the energy and the looks this era. The vibe is cool. Just wish the song was stronger or they were pushing her a bit more.

And now Lorde knocks off Modest Mouse to become the seventh #1 of 2021 on Billboard's AAA Chart. This is her third #1 on the AAA chart, following "Royals" in 2013 and "Team" in 2014.

I initially thought this was pretty boring, but it has grown on me. It's better than We Are Between at the very least

This is collapsing @ alt this week. Death by Audacy. Hearing callout is awful format wide

This is collapsing @ alt this week. Death by Audacy. Hearing callout is awful format wide Probably because it's not an Alt song. (Although what is, anyway?) I'm surprised at the failure to chart on Hot AC so far. It's very Colbie Caillat. I don't listen to Alt stations on the regular, but I'm pretty sure this sounds awful to most of the gold/recurrent content.

Not surprising but ugh. It was so close to nabbing the Top 10 peak…

On Alt? Bad Habits doesn’t belong on alt, I said it’s got a place on some AAA. Solar Power certainly belongs on AAA, but not alt either. There is and should be a significant difference in AAA vs ALT.

Significant difference, you say? Well, 20/50 of AAA has charted on alt for at least one week. That's almost half the chart and is certainly not significant, plus two of these should have been gone long ago ("Heat Waves" and "Way Less Sad"), along with "Cloud 9" which is just below the top 50. I'm not against alt crossovers, but there's no reason why "A-O-K", "Way Less Sad", "Heat Waves" and "Follow You" should be on AAA. On Discord I showed a snippet of the Year-To-Date of a station, WMMM, and the people couldn't tell it was an AAA. They really thought this was an alt station. Likewise, look at KYMK's top songs of the year thus far. Every single one (except Lord Huron) of the top 15 charted on alt, and almost every one of the top 10 will be on the upcoming alternative year-end chart. And as I mentioned, they play Rise Against and nu metal Linkin Park as recurrents. Again, I cannot tell if this is actually an AAA because it really is an alt at first glance. I'm not against alt crossovers but it shouldn't be too much to make it a 2nd alt. A line has to be drawn somewhere.

I get the feeling that many of you have never programmed a radio station. A spreadsheet programmer is the worst thing in the industry.

New song out today. I wonder if it’ll be pushed to Alt and AAA? I personally like it better than Solar Power.

Mood Ring is a solid song, but doesn’t it sound a lot like “Unwritten”?

Mood Ring is a solid song, but doesn’t it sound a lot like “Unwritten”? Yes. So far this album very much reminds me of Caillat/Bedingfield. That’s not a bad thing necessarily. I’d be surprised if ALT picked this one up, but I would like to hear it on AAA.

'Mood Ring' is a better song than both of the others we've heard so far.
I know a lot of people are feeling very "meh" about new Lorde, but I'm quite pleased. It's absolutely not what any of us were expecting (probably for the worst), but the output isn't bad at all. I'm glad to see that SP nabbed a #1.

not to mention had she released "Team" 2.0 as the lead single, people would be complaining about how she's doing the "same old, same old." I do agree "Solar Power" is not a good lead single for a pop artist, but who's to say Lorde wants to be one? we need to hear the album first to decide if it works well as a lead single but so far, I think she's successfully letting it be known that the vibe of this album is going to be beachy, cozy, and more playful than her first two albums. if these do hold up when the album is out, I think I'd be happy to say "Solar Power" functioned well as a lead single. Lorde hasn't had any top ten hits after her one-two punch with "Royals" and "Team." In fact, "Green Light" and "Yellow Flicker Beat" are her only other songs that made it onto the top half of the Hot 100. so this is doing great so far (on streaming I mean). as I suspected, "Solar Power" works as a perfect appetizer for this album and sets the tone well. "Mood Ring" could have been a better lead single commercially but I appreciate that she didn't go with the safest option.

I listened to both "Mood Ring" and "Stoned at the Nail Salon." I dunno... they're both ok. I thought "Solar Power" was slightly better, but I feel like Lorde's music this time around isn't as distinct and the three songs sound a lot like other artists out there now.

Very late 60s early 70s Melanie style pop folk. But - 8 years into a career, no guarantees you sustain elite success. Some do. Most do but. It’s a gamble. But she’s clearly an artist with her own vision. The next chapter to be written: will she get large mainstream bites off a single 2 @ alt. A real big question.

At this point I think Lorde actively does not want mainstream success, and that's okay. A lot of artists at her point in career kinda default to whatever is poppy at the time and I worried that was the road she was taking after Melodrama, but this album is definitely a huge 180. Beautiful atmosphere, sparse arrangements, and introspective lyricism yeah this definitely harkens back to the 60s/70s flower girl culture. I'll take quality over charts any day.
