I’m underwhelmed by the tracklist. 10 songs of which we’ve already heard 3???

I know this thread will tank anyway, so sorry not sorry for double post, but Last Train Home is fantastic and based on the clips of the other two, this could be my favorite album of his since Continuum, track for track. He's made songs I have put in his top 5 since that album, but none of the albums themselves as a whole are his strongest. Battle Studies actually came close, especially because of God-tier Edge of Desire, one of the best songs ever made. In fact, this album kinda reminds me of that one in sound, but more committed. So ready. He, Taylor, and Carrie are the only artists I have wanted to see live that I haven't yet.
Edit: Wow. I have REALLY paid Paradise Valley dust. I didn't even remember the name of the album, when I was scrolling through my collection. That was definitely his worst and shit, I forgot all about The Search For Everything, but that's the issue. Outside of Born & Raised, I don't remember whole albums past Battle Studies. Sob Rock will either be my favorite JM album or 2nd after Continuum. Mark my words.

Last Train Home New Light Wild Blue Til the Right One Comes Carry Me Away All I Want Is to Be With You
Just dawned on me that 80s = Sob lol but this is definitely 80s soft rock, heavy on the cheese as to be expected. It's a very pleasant listen nonetheless.

Very good album. Already on first listen I know I'll listen again and enjoy singing along.
I disagree with Lee about Paradise Valley which I like very much (Dear Marie being one of my favorites of John Mayers discography) and thats maybe why my favorite on Sob Rock is I Guess I Just Feel Like which reminds me of Paradise Valley.
Of course there are already 4 songs we already knew on Sob Rock but John Mayer still surprises me with songs like Wild blue or Til The Right Comes.
All I Want Is To Be With You is a classic ending-ballad like on the previous records and I love it too.

Kind of underwhelmed by this. I LOVE “Last Train Home” and liked “I Guess I Just Feel Like” well enough when it came out, but the rest is just okay for me. Not bad but not something I see myself revisiting.

Shouldn't Matter but It Does Why You No Love Me Shot in the Dark Carry Me Away All I Want Is to Be With You
^^^
I'm keeping these (plus "New Light" which I have and adore since it came out). Not sure how frequently I'll be coming back to it but it's a cute, little EP.

It’s a strong effort - probably his best in a long time, maybe since Battle Studies. But can someone please tell me why I keep singing “Aint That America” when the chorus comes in on “Til The Right One Comes”??

Well, Continuum still reigns. In fact, Battle Studies is also better than this and of course, his debut is over this as well. But, in 2021, it's a solid John Mayer album, especially since he is pretty much focused on Dead & Co, it seems. He definitely committed to the sound. I guess it's just not my favorite kind of music. Never was when it was out, but I figured John Mayer could make me love anything. I like it better than Paradise Valley and maaaybe Born & Raised, but if I revisit that album, I think I would like it more than this one. I kinda get novelty vibes, which is, I guess, his defense mechanism against critics, but critics actually wound up being kind to this, so his master plan worked? Great marketing, I will say and Last Train Home is a fantastic "first single," even if New Light is a better song. If the first 8 were the album and he kept it REALLY tight, it would have been flawless, but I still enjoy this. It will probably continue to grow on me, but I feel it's more fall than summer.
1. All I Want Is To Be With You (WOW. I was not ready for this but...Max Martin should sue. Still, it's a flawless song and better than I Want It That Way anyway, so I don't care.) 2. I Guess I Just Feel Like (The song on the album I was waiting for. Stunning and one of his best, especially vocally. His voice makes me melt into a puddle here. A Grammy-worthy song.) 3. New Light (I LOVED this song and like it even more now that I have heard the whole album.) 4. Carry Me Away (Gorgeous and I love the nod to The End of Innocence. SHOCKED there is no credit given, though, even with John's cred in those circles.) 5. Last Train Home 6. Shot In The Dark 7. Why You No Love Me 8. Shouldn't Matter But It Does 9. Wild Blue 10. Til The Right One Comes

I love that he included New Light on this, as that is one of his best songs in a while, for me. Sucks I had to wait like 2 years for it to be on an album.
I like where he was going with the concept of this album, but I'm not in love with the whole thing.

I’m really liking this, and am glad that the singles over the last couple of years are included here. They really fit in with this album. There’s not a song that I don’t like. As for the songs that are new to me, “Till The Right One Comes” is probably my favourite. I know it looks like “Shot In The Dark” will be the next single, and that’s a good choice too.

#2 debut with 84k SPS (61k sales) - just 5k shy of a #1 debut. Lame!

LTH is an absolute earworm. Maren Morris’ BGVs elevate the back half of the song even more, too.
As a whole, I really enjoy the record. However, …“Why You No Love Me” might be the most annoying song title + lyric ever. Something about a grown man adopting satirical Gen Z baby-talk from Twitter memes just doesn’t do it for me.

I gave this a listen because I was obsessed with “New Light” I was surprised with how much I enjoyed some of it. Besides ”New Light” I also liked and added “Shot In The Dark, Last Train Home, Why You No Love Me and Till The Right One Comes”. I may go back to it eventually because I don’t remember being horrified by any of it. I have a few of his cds but mostly only listened to the singles. Maybe I’ll go back and check out some of his back catalog.

I wasn't initially all that into the ballad version of "Last Train Home," but it's growing on me. The guitar work. The album as a whole has grown on me too.
