This podcast came up in my recommendations and I heard some interesting tidbits.
• she’ll be guest hosting Ellen in the near future.
• she’ll be a judge on the upcoming Apple TV competition series My Kind of Country (executive produced by Reese Witherspoon).
• she’s working on releasing new music this March or April and wants to drop EPs before her next album because she knows people consume music rapidly and releasing consistent bodies of work is how she plans to sustain momentum. She reiterated several times that country radio is not supporting her (or receptive to her) so I doubt we’ll get a radio push anytime soon (if ever). 💔 She also told the story of how BTYLM broke records with its adds week and how it stalled because iHeart was deciding between her and another female artist for their On the Verge pick, they chose the other woman and basically pulled support for Micky’s single because “we can’t play two female ballads back-to-back”. Mickey didn’t name the artist but said she’s a friend (and my internet sleuthing skills tell me it was Cam because Burning House did get OTV that summer).
The episode was pretty long but super detailed (since the host is a friend of hers) because she detailed her whole story from start to now so it’s worth a listen if you’re a fan.

Thanks for posting that, I knew part of her story (the part about meeting the hip-hop DJ and then her struggles after "Better Than You Left Me" and such) but there was so much stuff that I didn't know. I loved listening to it in its entirety.
My heart kind of broke when the host asked "do you know how many albums you've sold?" or something of that sort knowing her album didn't chart, but it was also great to hear how she's embracing opportunities in the film & TV area; that should allow her more financial support in order to keep creating the music she really wants to make.

What was her response? I still can't believe her album didn't chart with the amount of promo she had leading up to the drop. Hopefully she'll be able to snag a win at the Grammy's in about a month from now, although I imagine it's an uphill battle.

You're welcome. I enjoyed how in-depth it was because I knew some of her story as well (I actually interviewed her a million years ago when she was signed as Mycale and promoting her "A-Game" single) but I appreciated learning of how many serendipitous chances she's gotten to bring her to this point. She truly seems destined for greatness. What was her response? I still can't believe her album didn't chart with the amount of promo she had leading up to the drop. Hopefully she'll be able to snag a win at the Grammy's in about a month from now, although I imagine it's an uphill battle. "I don't know the numbers but [it's sold] fairly." In the same breath, she mentioned that it's Grammy nominated, and referenced how Kacey was able to win Album of the Year with an album that country radio chose not to support, so that makes her feel like it’s successful because at least her peers are actually listening to the music in spite of radio not playing it.

Just watched her set at Essence Fest (via Hulu) and she sang two new songs: My Side of the Country and Make It Me. They were both uptempo and pretty catchy; hope it’s a sign that she’s releasing new music this summer.

Love her voice and love a lot of her songs but I feel like she needs more uptempos, a lot of her best stuff and her catalog in general are ballads. Uptempos are more likely to make the GP (and me) come back to stream again and again.

Unfortunately no matter what kind of country music she makes or how good it is, I don't think country audiences/radio are going to support it. This audience is one who sees Morgan Wallen as a victim and sees Guyton as taking things from white men. Hopefully Guyton has made in roads for women in country music and will help those coming after her, but sadly she probably isn't ever going to find commercial success in country music.

My Kind of Country premieres March 24th on Apple TV+. Kacey Musgraves is co-hosting the competition series with Reese Witherspoon while Mickey, Jimmie Allen and Orville Peck will serve as the talent scouts. So happy the pandemic didn’t shelve this!

Wish they did a collab on Cowboy Carter. Would have made a great addition to the album.
