Or you predicted them all?

1. Mariah finally got a 19th no.1, with AIWFCIY.
Did you predict back then in early 2010s, when Mariah's non Xmas success faded away, when Billboard allowed old Xmas song to re-chart, and this song started to re-enter Hot 100 every Xmas season?

2. Katy Perry's Witness era bombed + drastic hairstyle change.
Did you predict back then during Prism era when Roar and Dark Horse were among the massive hits, and Prism did well despite not as huge as Teenage Dream era?

3. Taylor Swift is still with no real flop era till now.
Did you predict back then during Reputation era, when she was critisized hard, the lead single hit no. 1 but fell fast, and the future was kinda hard for her?

4.Ariana Grande is the top hitmaker today, 6 no. 1s in very short span.
Did you predict back then, in 2013 during her debut era, and she also found it hard to score even a Hot 100 no. 1 with many trials, despite many Pop radio no. 1s. Well... Problem almost made it.

5. Justin Bieber's 2015 comeback and he's still a thing till now (despite a hit and miss).
Did you predict back than, in around 2013 when he was a trouble maker, hated and many people considered he wouldn't survive his career as an adult, and even worse One Direction started to smash and were considered 'replacing' him?

6. Nicki Minaj finally scored 2 Hot 100 no. 1s (although both were not from her own projects).
Did you predict back then, in mid 2010s, after a decade of trials with millions of collaborations, and her highest peaking hit was the no. 2, Anaconda, and it seemed her career was stuck by getting rap credits in almost all rappers/pop stars even pop/rock bands, and still no massive hit?

7. Lady Gaga's 2018 comeback + a healthy era with Chromatica.
Did you predict back then during Joanne era when her commercial appeal started to kinda faded away, and 3-4 years later, she surprisingly added 2 more no. 1s after around a decade, since Born This Way massive era?

Katy’s downfall and Gaga’s comeback are the ones I definitely didn’t see coming.

I'd say 2014-15 were the hardest days for her success-wise.

Mimi is my choice here, as no one could see AIWFCIY coming so strong in streaming era.

Never in a million year, i predicted Katy to bomb, right after Prism era. A mystery for me. But her drastic haircut was also a huge mistake, I guess.

I also didnt predict a 19th no. 1 for Mariah. I only predicted AIWFCIY would re-enter every year after 2012's Billboard rule change, and at least made top 20. Hitting top 10 in 2017 was surprising.

Gaga's comeback is shocking, just like Katy's downfall. Right after Joanne era, i believed her Hot 100 success would be limited and she would be more as an album seller.

Ariana: i expected her to be a successful artist, but not as a 2010s top hit maker like Rihanna. Nice.

Didn't expect Gaga's comeback with that album nor Bieber to overcome the onslaught of negative press (or deliver such a quality album).

The rest weren't surprising to me. Once Billboard changed the rules for Christmas songs charting I knew it was only a matter of time for Mariah. Katy's downfall was clear as day to me even during the TD era--her brand was too tied to success, her musicality so of the moment, that I couldn't see her successfully pivoting or maintaining a big fanbase. Taylor has seemed like a unicorn since the Red era, Ariana wasn't surprising, and I never really think about Nicki.

I'll respond to what I remember thinking about each:

1. Mariah finally got a 19th no.1, with AIWFCIY.
Did you predict back then in early 2010s, when Mariah's non Xmas success faded away, when Billboard allowed old Xmas song to re-chart, and this song started to re-enter Hot 100 every Xmas season?

Back in 2001-02, I saw Mariah as a done goose. Put a fork in her, she's done. Her 2005 comeback surprised me beyond all else. So, technically speaking, I didn't think she'd get a 19th #1, because I didn't think she'd get 18, 17 or 16 either. I think when AIWFCIY began charting and having improved showings year after year, I figured it was a matter of time that it would get to #1. When it finally happened, it was still as exciting as it would have been if I didn't expect it to.

2. Katy Perry's Witness era bombed + drastic hairstyle change.
Did you predict back then during Prism era when Roar and Dark Horse were among the massive hits, and Prism did well despite not as huge as Teenage Dream era?

I wouldn't have seen her doing as poorly as she said as quickly.

In Taylor's earlier years, I didn't have her pegged as one of the biggest music stars in the world, nor would I ever think of her as someone I'd even care about, yet fast forward to 2019, both had happened. I'd be surprised if she ever really had a flop era tbh - but the goalposts will move for each era so as long as we don't expect 1989 numbers for every album, I don't think she will.

Because it took her so long to really dominate, I didn't think she would in the middle of the last decade. Even around 2015 or so when she was doing well, she didn't seem to be the "big deal" that she was around thank u next. I think that era elevated her in a huge way. In hindsight, it really could happen to anyone who is able to reach that mid-level of pop fame.

5. Justin Bieber's 2015 comeback and he's still a thing till now (despite a hit and miss).

Everything from 2015 about JB surprises me. His continued success surprises me. Even his start and how he got to fame in the first place surprises me. Just when it looks like he might be done, he owns the charts.

In 2010-11, I'd have predicted Nicki would get a #1 one way or another. I didn't think it would take so long. But I think the way she got to #1 with the songs she did it with aren't really a reflection of her as much as it is with how numbers are tabulated and pushed now. Going back to what I said earlier, anyone can really get a #1 if everything lines up, even with songs that aren't even that big. Neither of Nicki's #1s are anywhere near the top half of her most known singles or biggest hits.

About Katy, I remember, when Rise, her single before Witness era, stalled at no. 11, I started to worry about Katy, but Chained To The Rhythm did debuted at no. 4, which was a good sign.
And the 2 follow up stalled outside top 40. It was so weird and unexpected.
I really hated her hair back then. I believed it also killed her mass appeal as a cute pop star.

I wasn't surprised at Katy's downfall. Maybe it's surprising from this pov, for people who didn't follow the music scene back then. She waited too long for Prism follow up, and let's be honest, she's not Adele to afford a long break (and that’s just one thing out of many). I still think she can score top 20/30 songs, if she really wants to.

My answer is Gaga. I mean, you can say Rain On Me did well because of Ari, but she really did THAT with ASIB, and no one can take that away from her.

Donna Summer's huge come up in the late 70s. Always thought she would be known for the controversial song LTLYB but she became huuuuuge!

Cher's comeback in 1999...came outta nowhere.

Same with Tina Turner...after she left Ike I thought she was through but she came outta nowhere in '84.

Diana Ross falling off fast in the mid-to late-80s.

Aretha, Patti, Gladys, Chaka and Dionne getting huge blockbuster pop hits in the mid-80s.

Cyndi Lauper falling off fast speaking she was everywhere in 83 and 84.

Janet Jackson being a mega-star. Did not see the blockbuster album Control coming...but im not complaining. Janet is a legend!

Taylor Dayne having a string of huge hits then falling off so fast.

Vanessa Williams with "STBFL". Never thought she would have a mega hit but she did.

Dionne getting a hit in the mid and late 70s.

Diana Ross having the most number ones by a female artist from 1976-1988. Everyone thought after she left the Supremes and when she had that stagnation in the mid 70s...she proved us wrong and got 4 more #1 hits.

Physical staying #1 for as long as it did.

I honestly wasn't expecting Gaga to have the comeback she's had. I really thought she was over after Artpop (even with the moderate success of Joanne), and I'm happy that I was wrong.

None of these surprised me that much except Justin Bieber being able to overcome some of the bad press and still having such a big fanbase. I guess I wasn't expecting Katy to fall off quite as quickly as she did, but the Prism era was a hot mess. Not saying the era wasn't successful or even that the album was bad, but that was the era she should've gone for something slightly cooler or edgier, and instead she became even more of a cornball. The second-hand embarrassment from watching the "Birthday" video was when I really knew she lost the plot. By the time of Witness, the cooler and edgier thing came too late, and it wasn't even cool because it was still really corny (with her worst lyrics to boot)!

I never counted Gaga out, and the Mariah thing was not surprising once older Christmas songs could chart again. I guess if you left the detail of it being that song out, I would've been shocked that Mariah managed a 19th #1 hit, as I would still be shocked if she could do it with a new song (especially a non-Christmas one). But stranger things have happened and I definitely wouldn't be mad.

I didn't expect Ariana to make it as big as she has for as long as she has, although I expected her to finally reach the top at some point.

I didn't think Katy's fall would come until her 5th album, not her 4th. Prism showed a natural erosion from Teenage Dream, so I thought she'd still be pretty successful with Witness and the album after that would be the one that suffered all the "flop" talk. A shame since I liked Witness, it was actually the first time I was fully on-board the Katy train. I should know by now that I have the kiss of death though, lol.

These two. I really thought Katy was gonna be still on top of the pop world up until "Bon Appétit" and "Swish Swish" happened. What a collapse.

Gaga I never expected for her to rebound so much. "Million Reasons" was technically a hit but it also felt like she had to work overtime for it to happen at all and it wasn't even that big in the end. But then the movie gave her such a huge boost. I think she's safely in that A-List status where no matter what she drops she'll always get respect and attention now.

Actually the point about this polling is to know which chart success/fall that have happened, but you DIDNT expect to happen when you experienced the particular musician's career in a few years back then.
For example:
- Even: Mariah got a 19th Hot 100 no. 1 in 2019.
Did you expect this even to happen back in 2010, when you also experienced Mariah during her low era, flopping hard with many singles failing to chart on Hot 100?
